Colten Williams began putting together his Christmas light show a decade ago at the behest of his grandmother, who was inspired by light shows she had seen on TV.

But trouble started brewing in Kingsville after several neighbours lodged complaints about their street being crowded with cars for six weeks every year.

This month, the city enacted a new bylaw that would force the Williams family to apply for a permit for their display while also placing restrictions on the number of hours they would be allowed to leave the lights on.

“They basically limited the amount of hours I could have my show from about 28 hours a week down to 10 hours a week,” Williams said. “So you have 500 hours, 600 hours worth of set up time just to have 40 hours the lights on all month long. That’s an insane amount of work.”

Rogers said the council is sad to see them turn off the lights but said the show had outgrown its location as well.

“We were saddened to learn that the Williams family will not move forward with their light display this year,” he said.

“Our discussions with the family last year at a council meeting we both agreed that they had outgrown the neighbourhood.”

Rogers went on to say that the city had tried to work with the family to find an alternative location but was unable to meet their demands.

I have a heavy crystal decanter I've been using for years. A while back I was having some guests for a week, and thought I'd save some money and grabbed a bottle of Jim beam to put in it, as opposed to the higher end I tend to go for, because none of my guest cared about Bourbon. I noticed the level going down further than I had consumed. This has never been an issue before, so I figured someone had just nipped it while o was asleep. The next day, there was condensation on the inside, and the level had dropped further.

Since I'd been using the decanter for so long, I assumed the frosting on the stopper had rubbed off and it no longer sealed.

When it was empty, I refilled it with larceny, my standard, and to my surprise, it didn't evaporate at all for weeks.

Last night, I refilled it with beam again, and this morning, it had dropped and there was condensation on the side.

What really confused me, is Jim beam has a lower alcohol content than the Bourbons I usually fill the decanter with, so I would think it would evaporate as readily.

Why does only this one brand evaporate?

Quick searching gave me no results

Tldr: Why does Jim Beam evaporate in my decanter while nothing else does?

The meetings are just too full of buzzwords.

Summary

Amid record global heat and worsening climate disasters, 2024’s elections worldwide have highlighted declining political commitment to addressing the climate crisis.

Right-wing victories, including Trump’s U.S. win and climate-skeptic gains in Europe, have sidelined climate action, prioritizing inflation and energy costs instead.

The troubled Cop29 summit in Azerbaijan, marked by stalled emissions cuts and defiant pro-fossil fuel rhetoric, reflects this shift.

While some countries, like the UK, advanced climate agendas, overall momentum is fading, leaving activists and scientists alarmed as time to prevent catastrophic warming runs out.

In mid-October, as Kamala Harris began to do interviews with friendly audiences, she visited the Breakfast Studio of radio host Charlamagne tha God, where she took questions from callers. The first to come through was one of those questions that is often top of mind for voters, but dismissed in Washington as a naive misunderstanding of how the world truly works.

Why, asked the caller, do we send so much money overseas but seem to have nothing to meet the needs of people here at home?

“That’s one of the reasons the America First rhetoric resonates,” Charlamagne added, putting the question to Harris. “We can do it all—and we do,” Harris responded.

It was a callback to the debate in Washington the last time a Democratic president had pushed through a sweeping new social spending agenda, LBJ’s Great Society, but coupled it with ramped up spending on the Vietnam War. At a press conference in the summer of 1965, one reporter told President Lyndon Johnson, the day after the bombing of North Vietnam.

“Mr. President, from what you have outlined as your program for now, it would seem that you feel that we can have guns and butter for the foreseeable future. Do you have any idea right now, though, that down the road a piece the American people may have to face the problem of guns or butter?”

LBJ said that the American people would be willing to bear the burden. “I have not the slightest doubt but whatever it is necessary to face, the American people will face,” he responded.

He was wrong, of course, and the runaway inflation produced by the war spending broke the back of the New Deal coalition, shattering organized labor and ushering in the Reagan Revolution.

But, according to Harris, not only could the American people have both guns and butter, they already had it, and it was good.

Summary

Donald Trump’s plan to deport millions of undocumented immigrants is causing alarm in Texas, where industries like construction heavily depend on undocumented labor, comprising nearly 60% of the workforce.

Experts warn mass deportations could cripple the state’s economy, already strained by labor shortages and low population growth.

Workers like Veronica Carrasco, an undocumented house painter, fear family separations and job losses.

While Trump signals determination, some hope his policies might push Congress to enact immigration reform, such as a guest-worker program, to balance economic needs with national security concerns.

SafeRent is a machine learning black box for landlords. It gives landlords a numerical rating of potential tenants and a yes/no result on whether to rent to them.

In May 2022, Massachusetts housing voucher recipients and the Community Action Agency of Somerville sued the company, claiming SafeRent gave Black and Hispanic rental applicants with housing vouchers disproportionately lower scores.

The tenants had no visibility into how the algorithm scored them. Appeals were rejected on the basis that this was what the computer output said.
