Original Title: TIL that in 2002, Australia won its first-ever winter Olympic gold medal. It happened during the 1000m short track speed skating event, when over the course of the race all the competitors crashed, except for Australian Steven Bradbury.

New research reveals serious privacy flaws in the data practices of new internet connected cars in Australia. It’s yet another reason why we need urgent reform of privacy laws.

Modern cars are increasingly equipped with internet-enabled features. Your “connected car” might automatically detect an accident and call emergency services, or send a notification if a child is left in the back seat.

But connected cars are also sophisticated surveillance devices. The data they collect can create a highly revealing picture of each driver. If this data is misused, it can result in privacy and security threats.

A report published today analysed the privacy terms from 15 of the most popular new car brands that sell connected cars in Australia.

This analysis uncovered concerning practices. There are enormous obstacles for consumers who want to find and understand the privacy terms. Some brands also make inaccurate claims that certain information is not “personal information”, implying the Privacy Act doesn’t apply to that data.

Some companies are also repurposing personal information for “marketing” or “research”, and sharing data with third parties.

Z80 CPU, 2.03 MHz. 4kb of ram. No drives, just a cassette player/recorder, which frequently would lose your programs.

Good times.

Summary

Voters across eight states, including Arizona, Colorado, and Nevada, rejected ballot measures for election reforms such as ranked choice voting (RCV) and open primaries, despite a $110 million push from advocates.

The movement, inspired by Alaska’s 2020 adoption of these reforms, failed to gain traction, with critics citing confusion and doubts over RCV’s benefits.

Some reforms succeeded locally, including in Portland, Oregon, but opposition remains strong.

(cynth1a_leo) (2024)

Image description: A surreal indoor scene where a large, fluffy cloud hovers in the middle of a room over a comfy looking armchair. Sunlight streams through tall windows on the right, casting soft rays onto the cloud and the room. The floor is covered with green moss, with two plants placed symmetrically on either side of the room, with their bases obscured by thick fog.

Full Generation Parameters:

CynthiaArch. This image depicts a surreal indoor scene, with a soft, beige armchair positioned in the center on a lush moss carpet, creating a blend of nature and modern home decor. Behind the armchair floats a dense cloud, layered and soft, resembling natural cloud formations as it diffuses through the room, adding an aura of mystery and dreaminess. Bright natural light pours in from a large window on the right wall, with beams piercing through the cloud, casting warm patches of light on the floor and armchair, enhancing the spatial depth. The faint silhouette of trees can be seen outside, hinting at an outdoor natural setting. A few green plants are placed on either side, echoing the moss carpet and adding a touch of vitality to the scene. This composition, with carefully arranged clouds, moss, and lighting, creates a tranquil and surreal atmosphere, as if it were a peaceful retreat from reality.

My idea is that, in general, trojans aren't trustworthy for obvious reasons. But this cracker came from cs.rin.ru apparently which I DO trust.

We recently switched to using a Linux Mint laptop with an adblocker for our streaming (while also cancelling a bunch of services). A friend at the recycling center set it aside for me - the screen was irreparably smashed but it was otherwise quite a nice little laptop. Replacement screens were too expensive so I carefully removed the broken one entirely so it'd default to the HDMI port and then set it up as a quick media center (we watch a lot of YouTube and the ads were driving me crazy, I might switch to a more purpose-built OS eventually). The TV is one I pulled from an ewaste bin to replace my previous ewaste TV after it finally gave up. It has a thin line through one edge of the screen occasionally but is otherwise fine. I also recently found a perfectly good wireless trackball mouse and a Bluetooth keyboard in the same bin where I got the TV (came with that other mouse). The bin even supplied HDMI cables. The whole thing is perched on a particle board TV stand I found like a decade ago when the college kids move out.

I'm on an electricity tariff with dynamic pricing. The last week has been pretty rough in fairness, but generally it's really rewarding on most days and sometimes, on days like this, it's amazing.

Based on my past calculations, whenever the cost is below ~20p, I'm paying less for heating than I would with a gas boiler. Where the cost of energy is negative, I'm essentially getting paid to use surplus energy.
