I think the closest he can get to happiness is something like smug satisfaction.
In my experience with family members suffering from Dementia...the ability to read emotions often suffers dramatically in the onset and intermediate stages. Paranoia and anger generally follow (partially due to confusion of being unable to "read the room") as the decline progresses. Stressful events and loss seem to aggravate and accelerate the decline.

I listen to a number of conservative podcasts. Yes. They think Harris is secretly the president. Unless it's Obama that's secretly the president. They can't keep that straight because they don't know what a consistent narrative is.
