Shooter was a secret service agent firing at someone they thought had a gun. Suspect was arrested, no word yet if they ACTUALLY had a gun or not.

(I know, I know, NYP, but after going through 5 articles, this one seems to have the most detail.)

https://nypost.com/2024/09/15/us-news/shooting-reported-at-donald-trumps-golf-club-while-ex-president-was-on-grounds/

"Initial reports suggested two people were firing at each other. However, sources said investigators now believe the Secret Service agent was the only shooter."

According to that NYP article someone was a few holes ahead of trump with an ak47, secret service shot at them and they fled, dropping the gun. The suspect was then arrested in a traffic stop a 50 minute drive away from the golf course. I'll believe it when I hear it from a credible source.

Looks like they're updating the article. The AK47 angle is new.

[–] drunkpostdisaster@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

That would be pretty funny if the would be 47 was gunned down by a 47

[–] mctoasterson@reddthat.com 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The pics I saw indicate it was actually an SKS that was bubba'd (crappy polymer stock) so the dude probably bought it out of the back of someone's trunk or at a gunshow.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Wouldn't surprise me since they're also saying the serial # was destroyed.

I don't know... the FBI is saying that and Trump keeps telling us the FBI are a bunch of liars...

Trump: I'm waiting on the final word from the Russian FSB.

Last report I saw was the suspect left an "AK47 type rifle" with a scope, at a vantage point 300-500 yards from Trump's location at the time.

Now granted journalists don't tend to know a damn thing about firearms, or ask good follow up questions so who knows, it could be a DMR type of rifle like an SVD that the uninformed would mistake for an AK.

But if it's just a standard 7.62 x 39 AK pattern rifle, scoped or not, that's ... very optimistic at that range.

[–] Hegar@fedia.io 1 points 1 month ago

that the uninformed would mistake for an AK

I'm guessing the report about the type of rifle came from secret service who saw it.

Unless you’ve had training, 100yds is a very long shot.

[–] catloaf@lemm.ee 1 points 1 month ago

Possible. I'd guess he was just hiding in the bushes and waiting for Trump to get closer.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago

Unless it's a pistol, its either an M16 (or Ar15,), or an AK 47. Them's the rules in horrible reporting involving firearms.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 32 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Unless the NYT has new information, the gunshots were only reported as being 'in the vicinity.' This could mean completely outside of Mar-a-Lago and just a coincidence.

Here's the AP article. Go with that: https://apnews.com/article/trump-shooting-gunshots-florida-f62f8378d3a8ce7b2e99d6a8fb40aba9

…trying to burn through my gift links here 😅

From the article:

Teri Barbera, a spokeswoman for the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed that a shooting took place “on the grounds” of the Trump International Golf Course West Palm Beach while Mr. Trump was present. A “person of interest” has been detained, she said.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Fair enough. Still pretty vague. I'm thinking this likely has nothing to do with Trump or they would be screaming about it already.

[–] ccunning@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Definitely a “developing story”.

/u/jordanlund linked a NYP article saying it was a secret service agent who fired the gun at the person of interest. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’m treating everything as a rumor at this point.

Probably doing a golf pop

NRA: The only way to stop a bad golfer with a gun is a good golfer with a gun.

[–] SilverCode@lemm.ee 3 points 1 month ago

What kind of handicap do you need to be considered a good golfer?

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 17 points 1 month ago

I dunno who needed to hear this today, but AimLabs is free on Steam.

[–] RangerJosie@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago

Something something 3rd charms time something something.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

For what it's worth, the shooter was a secret service agent. Nobody else seems to have taken shots.

which sorta raises questions, dunnit?

[–] homura1650@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (2 children)

To be clear, the target of the shooting was an unidentified individual, and a scoped rifle was found in the vicinity.

Maybe something else happened, but it looks like the secret service doing their job and stoppingva shooter before he was ready to take the shot.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world -1 points 1 month ago

'the shooting' is the Secret Service agent doing their job. The story going the rounds is that the agent was doing a sweep ahead of trump, saw a guy with something that looked suspicious and decided to fire on the guy. Whatever happened between recognizing that things were hinky and the shots... well. that's the first question.

my cursory search on FL carry laws suggest that unless the guy was coming back from hunting, fishing or target shooting, then he's not allowed to open carry (there may be some other exceptions.) It's dubious that's what he was doing... In any case, dude in a public, not-controlled space, not being an active shooter doesn't generally allow for lethal force.

It's entirely possible the agent walked up and chatted with him, or tried to, and the guy either bolted or gave him reason to justify lethal force.

But the biggest question of all: why would a guy planning to kill Trump walk around in plain sight waiting for Trump to show up?

Like. I'm guessing you could see the, uhm, idiocy in that one.

[–] Snapz@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Can you think of anything less useful than a story with the source "according to the trump campaign"

[–] grue@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

LOL, the MAGAs are just trying to get another martyrdom vote bump.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

"hey bro... you can get Trump to autograph your rifle if you go to that spot and wait for him with it! Hey, I know. Get a go pro and live stream it!"

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 3 points 1 month ago

Damn, those Taylor Swift fans got real mad real fast.

[–] jpreston2005@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Won't someone rid me of this troublesome candidate?

am I doing it right, JD? Or should I say that drumpf is going to eat your pet?

[–] drunkpostdisaster@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Let's not speculate until we get more info. Republicans already made their conclusions, but we got to be better then that. Just be ready for some kind of retaliation
