Welcome

Welcome to c/vegan@lemmy.world. Broadly, this community is a place to discuss veganism. Discussion on intersectional topics related to the animal rights movement are also encouraged.

What is Veganism?

'Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals ...'

— abridged definition from The Vegan Society

Rules

The rules are subject to change, especially upon community feedback.

  1. Discrimination is not tolerated. This includes speciesism.
  2. Topics not relating to veganism are subject to removal.
  3. Posts are to be as accessible as practicable:
    • pictures of text require alt-text;
    • paywalled articles must have an accessible non-paywalled link;
    • use the original source whenever possible for a news article.
  4. Content warnings are required for triggering content.
  5. Bad-faith carnist rhetoric & anti-veganism are not allowed, as this is not a space to debate the merits of veganism. Anyone is welcome here, however, and so good-faith efforts to ask questions about veganism may be given their own weekly stickied post in the future.
    • before jumping into the community, we encourage you to read examples of common fallacies here.
    • if you're asking questions about veganism, be mindful that the person on the other end is trying to be helpful by answering you and treat them with at least as much respect as they give you.
  6. Posts and comments whose contents – text, images, etc. – are largely created by a generative AI model are subject to removal. We want you to be a part of the vegan community, not a multi-head attention layer running on a server farm.
  7. Misinformation, particularly that which is dangerous or has malicious intent, is subject to removal.

I feel like my normal response when someone tells me they are vegan is, do you mind picking the lunch spot then? I struggle to find vegan friendly spots.

HappyCow can be a good resource for this sort of thing. Every time it gets mentioned, though, an old Smosh skit gets stuck in my head.

I always struggle with Happy Cow and its filter options. You can either filter for 'vegan sites' or 'vegetarian options' but not 'vegan options'.

Option 1 will only show restaurants and cafés that are fully vegan, so this will bring the list down to almost nothing in most smaller or medium-sized cities.

Option 2 shows all restaurants that serve also vegetarian food but not necessarily vegan options. So this leaves me with a huge list.

I'd like filters like 'has at least two vegan options declared in the menu' or 'offers vegan options on request'.

Missing "So?".

This is the attitude of a lot of non-vegetarian catering chefs when they are catering vegetarian meals. You absolutely do get protein deficiency, because they just take meat-oriented recipes and replace the meat with eggplant. Or they just put lettuce salad, and like nothing else.

(I do occasional volunteer work for a pretty progressive organization that probably has some vegetarians in it. They feed us, but sometimes they are forced to use cheap crappy convention center catering that doesn't know how to cook vegetarian food.)

My favorite, as a long time vegetarian and recent vegan, is "do you know what meat tastes like???"

No. I don't. I haven't had meat since I was like six. No clue what it tastes like.

I do, and i find it overrated. And i ate meat for like 30 years.

Another question that i get a lot is: don't you miss it? No, i would just eat it then. I'm not forced to live the way i live. I could buy cigarettes and smoke in my bed if i wanted to, but i don't,it's disgusting
