THE POLICE PROBLEM

2461 readers

The police problem is that police are policed by the police. Cops are accountable only to other cops, which is no accountability at all.

99.9999% of police brutality, corruption, and misconduct is never investigated, never punished, never makes the news, so it's not on this page.

When cops are caught breaking the law, they're investigated by other cops. Details are kept quiet, the officers' names are withheld from public knowledge, and what info is eventually released is only what police choose to release — often nothing at all.

When police are fired — which is all too rare — they leave with 'law enforcement experience' and can easily find work in another police department nearby. It's called "Wandering Cops."

When police testify under oath, they lie so frequently that cops themselves have a joking term for it: "testilying." Yet it's almost unheard of for police to be punished or prosecuted for perjury.

Cops can and do get away with lawlessness, because cops protect other cops. If they don't, they aren't cops for long.

The legal doctrine of "qualified immunity" renders police officers invulnerable to lawsuits for almost anything they do. In practice, getting past 'qualified immunity' is so unlikely, it makes headlines when it happens.

All this is a path to a police state.

In a free society, police must always be under serious and skeptical public oversight, with non-cops and non-cronies in charge, issuing genuine punishment when warranted.

Police who break the law must be prosecuted like anyone else, promptly fired if guilty, and barred from ever working in law-enforcement again.

    That's the solution.

Our definition of ‘cops’ is broad, and includes prison guards, probation officers, shitty DAs and judges, etc — anyone who has the authority to fuck over people’s lives, with minimal or no oversight.

RULES

Real-life decorum is expected. Please don't say things only a child or a jackass would say in person.

If you're here to support the police, you're trolling. Please exercise your right to remain silent.

Saying ~~cops~~ ANYONE should be killed lowers the IQ in any conversation. They're about killing people; we're not.

Please don't dox or post calls for harassment, vigilantism, tar & feather attacks, etc.

Please also abide by the instance rules.

Phoenix police had to apologize earlier this month after Talan’s parents Becky and Travis Renner received special valet parking services from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office cops.

A deputy was seen pulling the millionaire gym owners’ white Tesla Model X into a private car park so they could avoid running a gauntlet of journalists.

Authorities took months to name the suspects, with enraged locals who demanded justice and claimed the young boys’ powerful families were preventing justice from being served.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office

really tired of hearing about these shitbags...

[–] halcyoncmdr@lemmy.world 62 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (2 children)

So are we in the rest of the AZ counties.

And this is after they got rid of the Fuckstick Arpaio back in 2017 and have at least had Democratic Sheriff's since. Although, to be fair to him, Skinner was just elected this year. Not an excuse, but his predecessor was there since 2017. And was Sheriff at the time this happened.

[–] lambchop@lemm.ee 10 points 3 months ago (1 children)

FYI Sheriff Skinner is a DINO. There is a rule that says an appointed sheriff has to be the same party as the person they are replacing. Skinner changed parties so he would be eligible.

[–] Maggoty@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

That's only if they're filling in the rest of the term. I don't know if that's what happened but I did want to clarify that Arizona doesn't tie voter's hands. Only the executive.

[–] lambchop@lemm.ee 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

It is. Skinner was appointed last February, and changed his party affiliation to Dem the day after his predecessor sheriff Penzone said he would quit.

As a Houston resident with a "democrat" at the mayoral level and in a number of police offices, I can't tell you how little this changes things. These people wear the (D) name badge to win the "Vote Blue No Matter Who" demographic, then run as far to the right as our fascist state government allows.

[–] DarkShaggy@lemmy.world 19 points 3 months ago

At least they're....consistent?

[–] L0rdMathias@sh.itjust.works 133 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Yawn

Oh look, another sociopath murderer whose out of touch rich parents will bail out and then will give him a free ride through a pay-to-win degree at an ivy league school catapulting him into a useless but well-titled corporate position so we can have yet another narcissistic [choose one or more: pedophile/rapist/murderer] in a position of power.

[–] DarkCloud@lemmy.world 14 points 3 months ago

Capitalism is a predatory system. Wealth is a factor in why humans either have children or don't.

We are breeding paycthopaths to the detriment of society.

[–] Maggoty@lemmy.world 0 points 3 months ago

If this gets buried then we've finally made the complete jump. We have always had a double standard but catching an elite like this used to mean they'd be sentenced as harshly as the rest of us. The jump by the by, is from a wealthy capitalist elite to an actual aristocracy.

"millionaire gym owners’ son" my experience with rich kids is that they are cunts. Almost 100% of the time.

[–] bouldering_barista@lemmy.world 83 points 3 months ago (1 children)

This is fuckin tragic. I didn't need to read that. I hope justice is served albeit delayed at this point. This kid deserves time for violently attacking another kid, bragging about it, and trying to get away with no consequences. Yes he's young, but not too young to pay for this kind of crime.

[–] puppy@lemmy.world 46 points 3 months ago (2 children)

That's not normal behaviour. Kid needs to be tried as an adult and locked up for life. Then mental health evaluation consistently with a chance to be released after 25 years with good behaviour.

[–] arin@lemmy.world 8 points 3 months ago

Fire the whole police department too

[–] 3ntranced@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago (2 children)

I'd say go a step further. He took an innocent life knowingly and showed complete lack of remorse, why should his life continue? Is there really a benefit to society in the slightest to allow him to continue existing?

Just give him the death sentence and let his parents cope with the fact they failed at raising a child so badly that it had to be put down.

[–] Maggoty@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

No, because the death penalty shouldn't exist. But he should absolutely get 20 to life with parole dependent on mental health evaluation. Just like any other 17 year old who did this.

[–] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de -1 points 3 months ago

Disregarding the general braindead nature of this take, if anything the parents should be sentenced to death for creating this human and allowing him to turn out this way.

[–] Sanctus@lemmy.world 57 points 3 months ago

Dude should be in prison for murder. Bet you only see him running around the north side suburbs with his stupid goon squad.

[–] CTDummy@lemm.ee 52 points 3 months ago

Dad’s obviously a piece of shit judging from the smirk in the mugshot. My old man wouldn’t the slightest bit thrilled to be involved with the police because me and my crew of cowards beat a smaller, weaker kid to death. Certainly not if I were dumb enough to try humble bragging about it on social media.

Family wealth and both kids are violent criminals, one who simulate rape on someone one just beat unconscious, makes you wonder about the home life eh?

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 49 points 3 months ago

Travis Renner and his business partner reportedly plotted to bring Talan to a cabin until the injuries he sustained while handing out the beating healed. Detectives recorded that Renner’s family had ‘financial means to aid in fleeing to Mexico’ and he was taken out of the Phoenix area after the attack on Preston.

Phoenix police had to apologize earlier this month after Talan’s parents Becky and Travis Renner received special valet parking services from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office cops.

Well well.

Why do I insist on reading things that make me angry first thing in the morning....

[–] Gamerman153@lemmynsfw.com 9 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Me and you both. What a pathetic world we live in.

The world is actually quite amazing. So are humans. Systems of people are uneven, though.

[–] DarkCloud@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

Better than before bed.

[–] Maggoty@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

Because I get to spend the rest of the day sinking that anger into my ~~writing~~, ~~video games~~, ~~hiking~~, ~~activism~~, shit posting!

Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office

Well There's Your Problem.

They're constantly in the running for "Most corrupt sheriff's office in the country". And this is a country awash in truly awful sheriff's offices.

[–] Waldowal@lemmy.world 39 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Looked at the company this sack of shit's father owns. They are so great at advertising, they ripped off the Miyagi-Do logo for their t-shirts: https://www.relentlessmediaagency.com/about/

[–] 01189998819991197253@infosec.pub 5 points 3 months ago

They use the acronym of RMA on their logo. My brain expanded that automatically to 'Return Merchandise Authorization.' Their logo literally made me cringe, as the standard RMA process is horrific. As bad as the standard RMA process is, the owner of this particular RMA is very clearly worse, so the cringe-effect was warranted. Shitstains of an existence, they are.

[–] Jikiya@lemmy.world 33 points 3 months ago (3 children)

How is the dad not facing obstruction charges?

[–] PM_Your_Nudes_Please@lemmy.world 19 points 3 months ago

Because police are, first and foremost, class traitors who exist to protect the rich from the poor. And the dad is rich, so he’s being protected.

But heaven forbid we criticize rampant narcissm in this country

They should be skinned alive and made to eat it in front their parents.
