Welcome

Welcome to c/vegan@lemmy.world. Broadly, this community is a place to discuss veganism. Discussion on intersectional topics related to the animal rights movement are also encouraged.

What is Veganism?

'Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals ...'

— abridged definition from The Vegan Society

Rules

The rules are subject to change, especially upon community feedback.

  1. Discrimination is not tolerated. This includes speciesism.
  2. Topics not relating to veganism are subject to removal.
  3. Posts are to be as accessible as practicable:
    • pictures of text require alt-text;
    • paywalled articles must have an accessible non-paywalled link;
    • use the original source whenever possible for a news article.
  4. Content warnings are required for triggering content.
  5. Bad-faith carnist rhetoric & anti-veganism are not allowed, as this is not a space to debate the merits of veganism. Anyone is welcome here, however, and so good-faith efforts to ask questions about veganism may be given their own weekly stickied post in the future.
    • before jumping into the community, we encourage you to read examples of common fallacies here.
    • if you're asking questions about veganism, be mindful that the person on the other end is trying to be helpful by answering you and treat them with at least as much respect as they give you.
  6. Posts and comments whose contents – text, images, etc. – are largely created by a generative AI model are subject to removal. We want you to be a part of the vegan community, not a multi-head attention layer running on a server farm.
  7. Misinformation, particularly that which is dangerous or has malicious intent, is subject to removal.

I decided I would be willing to date a non-vegan since despite the conveniences and shared ethics of other vegans, it can be hard to find them in general, and maybe I could influence people positively, though probably without any expectation for them to go vegan (but still hoping society will move toward it one day anyway).

But online questions asking people (non-vegans) if they would date a vegan really shocked and surprised me when most of the answers were no, mostly for reasons of inconvenience and a fear of being pulled into veganism. This leaves me feeling like finding other vegans may be my only option after all. Is this somewhat accurate?

I couldn't date a vegan. Eating and eating out is just such an enjoyable part of life for me and my family. The restrictions of a vegan diet would just make life so difficult to share life with. My wife and I enjoy much of the same food together and sharing something you enjoy with someone you love is what makes relationships so fun.

Dated a vegan and eating out around here is impossible. It's 30-45 minutes to drive to the next town where there are vegan options.

Not a deal breaker, but it's tough.

Eating out is... Impossible™ :) (it's a brand of plant-based alternatives)

In all seriousness though, I usually have options in any restaurants I go to, at least where I live. So presumably the issue of vegan options while eating out would be a non-issue in my case.

She got me an Impossible burger at Burger King and it was straight revolting. We had just got back from my camp in the swamp and I was starving!

I do indeed like that Kind stuff!

But yeah, in this redneck burb, we couldn't find anywhere but a tiny coffee shop to get anything vegan.

I understand... but just in case it made any difference, there are usually alternatives I can eat in most situations, even so we're eating the "same" foods but I just get the plant-based version. Like for example, a non-vegan can eat meat while I eat a plant-based meat. Or they can have cow's milk latte while I have oat milk latte. I've done this a lot already and it usually works well...
