Im not sure Russia has this capability anymore but plenty of other foreign actors do.

The term feminism does essentialize the advocating for the equal rights of women (this is good actually), but it is also important to note that while this is a feminist community, this community is not about feminism. This community is about men and their specific liberation from oppressive gender roles and stereotypes.

Well, it's important to recognize that the term is distinct from egalitarian. The term feminism does essentialize the advocating for the equal rights of women, but it is also important to note that while this is a feminist community, this community is not about feminism. This community is about men and their specific liberation from oppressive gender roles and stereotypes.

"Men's rights" has literally always had a toxic connotation.

The term "men's rights" was used at least as early as February 1856 when it appeared in Putnam's Magazine. The author was responding to the issue of women's rights, calling it a "new movement for social reform, and even for political revolution", which the author proposed to counter with men's rights.[12] Ernest Belfort Bax wrote The Legal Subjection of Men in 1896, deriding the women's rights movement as a farcical effort by women—the "privileged sex"—to prove they were "oppressed."

It's probably not worthwhile to transfer the data. I would say the subscriber base alone get's you pretty fare.

One thing that rarely gets mentioned is these jobs are still old boys clubs. If you're anything other than a traditionally presenting male, you're going to have a hard time.

I would like to think that they’re minor, since it’s a federally funded program

This is the sort of thing you'd only ever hear from a resident of California. I can assure you it is never so easy in a red state.

Well my own usage so far consists of a mastodon list with my favorite peertube, nebula, and other video creators. Since it's chronological, it roughly serves the same purpose as the OG YouTube subscriptions page.

[–] spaduf 8 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

The creator is a nebula employee. Don't believe it's officially sanctioned, but they aren't distributing videos, just notifying of new releases. Should all be in the clear based on my limited knowledge.

Anyone who thinks Trump is a representation of masculinity is not someone who’s opinion on the matter I care for.

While this is a fine personal metric, I think it ignores the growing social power of the strong man right and the related manosphere subcultures.

Or at least that the effort required to construct one is maybe a misguided use of our resources.

Have you just created a community (or undergone some major revamp)? Consider posting in one of the following places.

Posts to adjacent communities are also useful. Particularly if your community fills a totally separate purpose. Please do not make posts on competing communities. If you are not sure, it is a good idea to reach out to the other moderation team before posting.

Certain fediverse platforms currently have major compatibility issues. Please check here before attempting outreach across incompatible platforms. If documentation of the issue is sufficiently detailed, it may be a good idea to bring it to the attention of the devs (see Feature Request).

Undocumented Issues

Issues between these platforms are known, but currently undocumented here:

  • Mastodon <-> Lemmy
  • Lemmy <-> Guppe
  • Peertube -> Lemmy

Wikis (self.dcbwiki)

One of the primary goals of this project is to push for the compiling of community knowledge into wikis and similar living documents. To that end, this Lemmy community is meant to serve as an example and playground for experimenting with the concept.

Native Wikis

Native wikis are composed of linked posts in whatever format is supported by the platform. They have significantly fewer features but make up for it in low barrier of entry. In most cases, your community is better off with a native wiki than none at all.

Hosted Wikis

Hosted wikis require a greater set of resources and capacities but can make a big difference if you find yourself in need of greater collaboration capabilities.

Some established wiki software:

Working Examples

Several instances provide wiki services to their users. If you would like your wiki added to this list, please leave a comment below.

Building a Study Plan (self.autodidact)

Building a Study Plan

Gather Your Resources

When trying to teach yourself a topic from internet resources, it is important to understand that you are very much constrained by the resources available to you. Free resources may be difficult to come by or out of date. To that end, an essential first step is to survey what resources are available and compile them into a study plan.

A Note on Study Buddies:
At this step, you may also want to reach out to one or more people you know have a similar interest. Having somebody to go through the process with you can make understanding the content less burdensome, while also improving motivation to learn.

Types of Resources

  • Books
  • Lectures
  • Mnemonic
  • Supplementary

Set Goals

Establish time-based milestones that you can use to regularly evaluate your progress. Be realistic and ready to change your plan if you're not meeting those milestones. Remember, because you're only accountable to yourself (or your study group) it's not such a big deal if you miss a deadline. To that end, giving yourself enough time to accomplish the milestone in the first place.

Similarly, you should establish consistent short term goals to maintain motivation and momentum. Things like making sure you consume some amount of learning material every week or ensuring you review your flashcards every other day will make a big difference in ensuring you don't lose track of your learning project.

Taking Efficient Notes for the Long Term

This step is optional but will make a huge difference, particularly in long-term retention. With that in mind, it is important to choose a note-taking method that will last. The first choice to make is digital or paper-based. Digital has the distinct advantage of being searchable and easily backed up, but if you're like me, it can be difficult to keep up with a single digital note-taking system. Paper by contrast has a more timeless quality to it and is far more flexible as far as your ability to record graphs and uncommon symbols (such as in advanced math courses).

Until this community goes through a round on the new communities/promo communities, you are unlikely to get significant response when posting here. However, I would be very excited to hear ideas about how you think this community should be run and what resources it should offer. Please feel free to post to that effect. Similarly, if you are interested in joining the mod team, please reach out.

Community Building (self.dcbwiki)
submitted 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) by spaduf to c/dcbwiki

One of the goals of this project is to encourage and simplify the process of providing a richer online social experience. With that in mind, methods to build value for the members will be compiled.

Techniques

Slow Drip

Frequently when you go to build a community, you will have a large trove of post material ready to go. Rather than posting all of that at once, schedule posts at regular intervals to avoid overwhelming your users.

State of the Union

Post about the growth of your community and any plans you may have for the future. By involving folks in the process of growth and curation, you both build institutional value in your community and ensure that your community is representative of its members.

Grand (Re)Opening

Post in relevant communities whenever first opening up or making a big change. This can be communities with similar interests to your own or spaces dedicated to community promotion.

Talk to Your Neighbors

Get in touch with communities that are similar in topic. At the very least, you should see about setting up "Related Communities" links.

Establish Credibility

Require or encourage the sharing of accreditations relevant to the topic. This is particularly useful for academic communities (think r/askhistorians).

Book Club

Have your community read through relevant works and discuss their implications. Consider compiling discussion into a wiki for the purpose of further building institutional knowledge.

Feature Request

Very frequently, the best parts of online communities are the result of tacking on unintended functionality to existing software (frequently in unergonomic ways). Chances are, if your community has adapted to jumping through some hoops to participate, folks would be better off removing those hoops altogether and building first class functionality. Take detailed note of where this occurs and consider speaking to your devs about it. Remember, your community is their community.

Institutional Knowledge

Take every opportunity to collect and provide resources to the members of your community. Nearly always, this is where the real value lies. If you're having trouble attracting members, consider improving your value to them by building institutional knowledge.

Living Document

Combine a resources and discussion into a single entity by providing a place for members to work through and compile the things they consider most important.

Group Chat

Provide a space for more direct communication. There are a wide variety of different styles and uses for a group chat. The structure will depend wildly on use case, but you are almost always better off having a more direct way to talk to each other.

Assemble Your Team

Reach out to a small team of people knowledgeable of your topic and see if they are interested in joining the team for your initiative.

Outreach (self.dcbwiki)
submitted 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) by spaduf to c/dcbwiki

One of the goals of this project is to build a culture and set of best practices for directly engaging with your social connections in community building activities. With that in mind, methods to get in touch with and organize with like-minded individuals will be compiled.

Techniques

Hey Buddy

Reach out directly to someone who may be interested in organizing with you.

Activity Drive

Organize an activity sometime in the future and schedule a dedicated period for outreach. Outreach should include enough time to allow for multiple attempts at getting the message out. Particular emphasis should be placed on message originating from multiple original sources.

Distributed Survey

Plan an event wherein community members directly survey their social circle's experiences. This has the benefit of both spreading word about your community and ensuring that your community is connected to a larger conversation.

Community Collaboration

Plan events with related communities. These events should emphasize crossover from the two communities, so as to expose more folks to their own people.

Crossposting

You should nearly always be crossposting to and from related communities. Crossposting is notable among this list for being relatively low impact and therefore repeatable over a shorter period of time.
