As an American-Brit who has been living in Sweden for a couple of years, I've always found it interesting that pretty much everyone I know here can be found at their home address simply by googling their name and clicking on hitta.se. When I show this to my British or American friends, they're always shocked, and I find myself explaining that "Swedes have a very different, more trusting, relationship with their government than Brits or Americans."

Personally, I've never had a problem arise from this, and neither has anyone I know here, but I've been here less than for two years. I love it here and I can see myself living here for the rest of my life (that is, if you'll have me! Soon time to renew my visa!)

But I find myself wondering: Has anyone here, or anyone you know, ever had a problem arise from their address being listed publicly? Strange people turning up at your door, weird post or packages, or something worse?

When I was a kid I had a teammate who was living under a false identity since they were hiding from his abusive father, and they had all the information about their new identity scrubbed from those websites just to play it safe.

They don't have phone books in the UK or US?

Phone books give you phone #. Having someones address is a different beast

Kinda.

I've worked for some "high profile" tech companies without phone support channels. When the company switch phone providers, they always, without fail, list everyone's corporate phone number publicly and people start calling them with their issues.

And it's never the reasonable persons, either; it's always the "you fuckers stole $5 from me because I forgot to end my subscription, give it back or I'll burn your house down"

Super creepy imo, especially when contrasted to swedes reserved nature and their way of not oversharing, salary is a edgy topic. BUT you can go online and get all the info you need, where they live, annual income, who lives with them, how many cars they got, when they moved etc. Really creepy laws tbh

The reason why I'm not talking about my salary is because of Jantelagen. I don't want to be seen as one that brags about it. If anyone wants to look up how much I earn I have no problems with it

wheeloffortuneee at 2023-07-06 07:32:07+00:00 ID: jqv212f

Well you dont have to brag, just answer the question, how much do you earn monthly, but we both know that question is pretty much frowned upon

If anyone asked me at a party, I would probably hesitate to answer, since I don't want it to be a talking point at the party.

If I was asked in a more private context I would have no problems sharing that information.

hitta.se is pretty harmless, with ratisit.se or merinfo.se you can see a lot more information about a person.

yes a friend of mine got was stopped by criminals in a crime ridden neighbourhood and they had guns in his face, apparently they had been driving behind him and looked up his plate number and they saw that he was from a rival gang neighbourhood but ofc my friend doesnt have anything to do with it so they didnt harm him. I think its crazy that this level of transparancy is allowed, Swedes being naive as always.

I have a hard time believing this. Gangs driving around looking up car numbers on their phones just to threaten the drivers from other neighborhoods...

Varför skulle jag ljuga om det här? Detta skedde i Vårby. Jag tvivlar på att du är ifrån orten men jag är det och sånt kan hända här, de trodde ju min vän var någon annan som de var ute efter.

Theres a massive problem with criminals being able to find their victims, and criminals at the same time sets their home where it isnt, even though its illegal it doesnt matter to them ofc.. So they eat and have the cake.

The system is retarded. It really doesnt bring any benefits to law abiding citizens.

Its an remnant from the good ole times when there wasnt shootings and bomb detonations every week.

Lots of politicians have gotten into problems because they write themself on a rotten cabin far away from the riksdag so they can collect extra funding for a second home in stockholm, where their wife and children already lived for years, but then journalists can find out about this.

Some of the recent bombings were targeted towards addresses of people written at the address (but obv not living there)

So yes, there might be an issue. Historically i dont think theres been much of an issue.

However, i personally think theres going to be an issue because of OSINT + criminals.

Nope. And none of my friends either. You cant really do that much with it anyway as most things on Sweden these days require a digital bank-id signature online.

Not personally. But for very rich people, CEO’s and so I know it can be a problem. It’s so easy to look up everything from your adress, how many cars you own, if you own business, how much money you make, so that it’s paradise for criminals who want information.

That’s not the purpose of the ”openness”, it’s more meant to for example counteract corruption, but it can be a consequence. This system doesn’t work anymore in today’s society and should be removed in favour of more protection and privacy for the private individual. At the very least people should have to demand the information from Skatteverket, not allow internet sites to publish it all. That would make it a bit more work at least.

Quite the opposite, it's easy to know how to find people if they lose their wallets. Could be a problem if you have enemies.

I know plenty of people who has had problems because of it. I’m a social worker and sometimes people are not happy about the decisions on for example försörjningsstöd and I’ve had colleagues/old classmates who’s had unwanted visitors as well as unwanted items left in their post. I also have colleagues that has gotten stalked by clients, gotten gifts and “love letters” in their post. Very creepy. Especially as a young woman living alone.

I’ve yet to experience it and have changed to middle name instead of first name to try to avoid it.

It is becoming more and more of a problem. I personally have not had anything negative happen due to it but people definitely use this kind of information for shady stuff.

It is very easy to look up old people, especially those that live alone, and target them for scams. My grandmother get calls and visits monthly if not weekly sometimes when they try to scam her or get access to her apartment.

As crime targeted against the elderly increases this becomes more of a problem and something needs to be done. If we had less crime and almost no one used this information for nefarious purposes it could be a good tool to help combat corruption and keep people in power honest. But when it is criminals that use it for the opposite purpose it isn't worth it. Stop the criminals or remove the public information
