Might be nice to give this instance more Solarpunk like colors. I am currently a bit short on time to work on this myself, but contributions are welcome.

A nice banner image would be cool as well.

The documentation on theming is not very detailed, but it seems to be mostly just Bootstrap 4: https://join-lemmy.org/docs/en/administration/theming.html (Edit: that docu might be outdated and it is actually Bootstrap 5 now)

An example for a instance with a custom theme is here: https://compuverse.uk/

on the flip side, kind of enjoying the default dark theme – the softer grays feel a little nicer on the eyes

but along those lines, putting in a vote for the Everforest color scheme – thematically fits, but designed for long programming sessions so might lose out a bit on the accessibility contrast side of things …

Same, I dig the default dark scheme with the mostly green icons. Though this one is nice too.

On the topic of helping though - if anyone wants help making icons for their community, I'd be happy to make something. I already replaced the one for Zerowaste so it would look more like most of the others. I was thinking about recoloring the one for !fixing to be green, though the existing icon is perhaps more recognizable as a right to repair symbol.

Registered users can select their preferred theme in the profile settings. This would only change the default theme for new users and for the unregistered visitors.

That colour set seems nice indeed.

I might give making a theme a go. I desperately need to exercise my design/front end skills (I'm a backend engineer and ohboy am I losing frontend skills)

Will report back when I have made... something

I have created a theme. I'm rather pleased with it but I'm still happy to hear feedback since I kind of just... created it with no general input. (I did intend to base it on Everforest! And then I had the thought "what if POSTS were LEAVES"). And no offense taken if we decide to go a different route for a custom theme.

There's still some wonky bits too, obviously. Most notably the pinkish line to the left side of the comments, which I can't remove because it's hard-coded into the HTML. (I have half a mind to open a PR to Lemmy's UI to remove it... or at least remove the dang !important flag)

If we do use this theme, I can of course send along the vine graphic (it's just pixel art I threw together) and the font for the SLRPNK name, which is free to use through google fonts.

Maybe try it with one of the colour palettes from here: https://forums.yoworld.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=218674

Worth noting: I still need to go through all the places text appears and check colour contrast for accessibility. I've been keeping an eye out for places where the contrast is too low, but I need to do a proper check.

Those leaves are a pretty cool idea. But I am not 100% sold on the colour choices though. Especially the blue at the top seems a bit out of place.

Also, did you test this with the new 0.18-rcs that switched to Bootstrap5 completely?

[–] okasen 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Haha yeah colour choosing is where my design skills do fall over and die. (I was going for a blue sky kind of thing but it DOES look weird). I'll try it with one of those colour palettes, they're pretty nice!

I'm 99% sure it's tested against 0.18 for lemmy-ui (I'm just working against the most recent main branch but I haven't pulled in a bit) but I'll make sure yeah.

[–] okasen 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ah, I'd tested against 0.18 but not a recent enough one, I've pulled down the newest (working) version with bootstrap 5 now and I'll be using that when changing up the colours. I am noticing some new issues with bootstrap 5, but nothing major.

Great. I'll look further into how to enable custom themes when upgrading to 0.18, which should happen in the next couple of days.
