Might be nice to give this instance more Solarpunk like colors. I am currently a bit short on time to work on this myself, but contributions are welcome.

A nice banner image would be cool as well.

The documentation on theming is not very detailed, but it seems to be mostly just Bootstrap 4: https://join-lemmy.org/docs/en/administration/theming.html (Edit: that docu might be outdated and it is actually Bootstrap 5 now)

An example for a instance with a custom theme is here: https://compuverse.uk/

on the flip side, kind of enjoying the default dark theme – the softer grays feel a little nicer on the eyes

but along those lines, putting in a vote for the Everforest color scheme – thematically fits, but designed for long programming sessions so might lose out a bit on the accessibility contrast side of things …

Same, I dig the default dark scheme with the mostly green icons. Though this one is nice too.

On the topic of helping though - if anyone wants help making icons for their community, I'd be happy to make something. I already replaced the one for Zerowaste so it would look more like most of the others. I was thinking about recoloring the one for !fixing to be green, though the existing icon is perhaps more recognizable as a right to repair symbol.

Registered users can select their preferred theme in the profile settings. This would only change the default theme for new users and for the unregistered visitors.

That colour set seems nice indeed.
