I've heard of Mastodon around the time Elon bought Twitter, researched it a bit, but I've never been a Twitter user so I wasn't particularly interested. My first real interaction with the Fediverse was 2 days ago when I tried Lemmy :D
Fediverse
A community dedicated to fediverse news and discussion.
Fediverse is a portmanteau of "federation" and "universe".
Getting started on Fediverse;
- What is the fediverse?
- Fediverse Platforms
- How to run your own community
> never been a Twitter user
Dude same, I've never been a twitter user before, exept the topics of mine is pretty dead there and I found out yesterday that the instance for roblox users died years before the migration(((
(IK roblox is still under controversies but im still on that topic while an alt isnt there)
But I did explore other topics like role reversal and I did found one, but its too little, but still happy with that and never left)))
Mastodon around four years ago. Couldn't get into it then (or again more recently when Twitter really started disintegrating), and I think it's because Twitter-style microblogging just feels conceptually broken for me.
Lemmy solves all the problems I had with both Reddit and Mastodon- just need to spread the word for the next couple of months and hit some kind of critical mass with adoption.
I've tried Mastodon a few times, and that was my first exposure. The first time, which was I don't even remember when, I joined mastodon.social, kinda got lost and never found anyone to follow and ended up just forgetting about it.
The 2nd was in 2020 after cth got banned and I remember someone in the Discord mentioning an instance I thought might be more interesting, so I joined it and it was definitely a better experience but again I just ended up forgetting about it after a while. Also when I came back later to check in on things I found the instance no longer existed.
I joined a third time around this time last year when some of my friends decided to join and I've used it a little more, but it's still pretty on and off, so I think part of the problem is just that I'm not super into the Twitter-like style of things. Having to follow individual people ends up feeling kinda tedious and since almost no one only posts things I find interesting, I end up either following no one or following enough people my feed is largely filled with things that don't interest me.
Aside from Mastodon I haven't really tried any of the others, but Lemmy definitely seems like it works better for me, preferring to follow topics and interests rather than individual people most of the time. I have actually looked at Lemmy before a few times, and liked it, but found it hard to get over the relative lack of activity, so I hope that's changing (and it seems like it might be).
Mastodon around a year ago. Hopped around to a few mastodon instances before finding alternatives. Been running multiple fediverse instances since then (and none of them are mastodon)
If Matrix counts as the Fediverse, then Matrix. I set up Matrix to join the postmarketOS server, then mirrored my OpenRGB Discord over to Matrix with a bridge bot. However, due to lack of moderation and an influx of spammers I ended up making that private.
Then I set up a Mastodon account when Twitter started showing signs of failure and have mostly moved to Mastodon though I still occasionally check up on Twitter.
Now I set up a Lemmy account because of Reddit's failings. Ready for the Reddit exodus. At least this time we're moving to something not in the hands of a single corporation that can sell us out like Digg and Reddit did.
PeerTube. I was getting really sick of Youtube, heard about it and went exploring.
By the way, Matrix, while it is a federated protocol, isn't part of the "Fediverse" (a word for federated software using the ActivityPub protocol [edit: and some others, see reply] , which are aimed towards social media rather than instant messaging)
@comfy
Fediverse is not only for ActivityPub. There are more. Diaspora, ostatus, zot at least.

Thanks for telling me, I just saw it on some fediverse charts
Hah, just a technicality. I like Matrix, but we won't be seeing any Matrix<->Mastodon interaction any time soon ;)
Huh, that's interesting that a chart included it, do you happen to remember which one?
I'll find it for you
Here, it sjows matrix on the side. I just meant encryption and private rooms tho. It was the one with trees https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse#/media/File%3AFediverse_branches_1.2.png
I'm not seeing the chart, did it not attach?
Had issues, sent a link now
I've just come here after the recent decision by Reddit to practically block most 3rd party access to their API.
Probably matrix: I dug a bit into the perotocol and started hosting my own instance. Mastodon followed (but not selfhosted)
Tried lemmy for a bit but didnt like it. Right now i give it another try.
I had known Mastodon for quite some time but never used it until lots of people came over there from Twitter (which I had never used) and then I set up my own instance.
And now I've also set up my own Lemmy instance, I am still using Reddit aswell, but I hope Lemmy gets enough activity for it to be actually useful (seems to be on a good path).
(Yes, I don't mix Mastodon and Lemmy, because Lemmy just works so different from most other ActivityPub software, it would just confuse me.)
Also I have used Matrix for quite a long time now.
Mastodon thanks to the whole Twitter debacle, although I have a hard time knowing if people or entities I follow on twitter are on Mastodon unless I happen to see them mention it. Trying out Lemmy while Reddit is in turmoil, and I’m finding it a better fit to connect to communities. Beginning to get a better understanding of the ‘verse now as a result of knowing about more than one implementation.
First exposure would probably be identica in 2010. For people getting started, these days I'd suggest less joining a specific platform and more by interest. Books -> bookwyrm , Video -> a Peertube instance, etc.
Way back when Diaspora was first being developed and people were starting to talk about it.
I tried mastodon in 2020 as I was getting fed up with twitter. I didn't find it very engaging at the time, so left. Came back when twitter locked down their API.
No I seld-host my calckey server, and it's great! No algorythmic bs, just what I want to see
First exposure to federation was Matrix, though I did not fully understand it at first.
First exposure to the fediverse was Mastodon after Twitter imploded.
@Bicyclejohn I think it was when I first heard about Diaspora*. But back then I just didn't try it. Just heard about it and I thought that I'd get there at some point. Then I heard about Mastodon way back a few years ago, but I didn't join because I didn't (and still don't) like Twitter. Then I decided to test a Facebook alternative (I was for a long time decided to move away from Zuck's garden and kept adding personal life milestones for this), and here I am, on Friendica 😁
Would you say its worth joining friendica if I'm already on here, mastodon and pixelfed?
@Bicyclejohn It depends. If you want to try out new stuff, then yes. Or if you want a network with the feature setthat it has, and which can communicate with pretty much all other networks on the Fediverse. Also, one of the Features of Friendica is that you can have your account automatically reshare everything you post from other accounts. So if you want to have your one-stop-shop for everything Fedi, do try it out 😁
Edit: thought I was in a different thread lol
Is there an official app or anything for friendica?
@Bicyclejohn Nothing official, but there are certain 3rd party apps listed on the website, or you can use Relatica. The webapp also seems to work well with the default themes.
Has a gone else used relatica. I noticed its a zip file. Don't want to unzip before I get feedback
@Bicyclejohn on Android? I tried it for a while, so it is safe. You can always scan it if you have some doubts (virustotal scans apk files as well iirc).
What I do not like about the app is that the dev seems to kinda hide some Friendica features for the sake of user-friendliness. For example, I couldn't figure out how to add titles to posts, nor did I see how to dislike a post. And you kinda have to keep in mind the BBCode formatting as there are no suggestions, like on the web for example:
[![Here's what you get when you type "[" in the web UI](https://i.imgur.com/bMTHskx.png "Here's what you get when you type "" in the web UI")
I'd try it once again tho to see how things evolved.
Here, yesterday.
Mastodon (also, Mashiro's fork) > Pleroma > Akkoma > Rebased. Quite a journey :D
Raised a few issues for Mastodon too which ClearlyClaire and Gargron responded/provided support.
Next up, it's #Kbin :D
@Bicyclejohn My first exposure to the Fediverse was Mastodon in Nov. 2018. After few months I forgot about it, and I returned in 2022 after the takeover of Twitter by Musk. I have to say, that although it motivated me, I was not active in Twitter if was not a necessity of my previous job.
This week I opened my account in #Kbin.
I was checking what the definition of Fediverse is, and when I go after the one from the Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse
Then it was when I implemented Pingback to my weblog so it looks like it was 2005.
Later around 2012, I was involved in the Tent protocol which was an alternative to OStatus and build a client for it. But because how bad their handled their community a year or so later I switched to:
Indieweb where I implemented a set of protocols and markup on my website to be interoperable with other websites which implement the same set of protocols and markup like microformats, micropub, webmention, etc. To this day I still am using my own website as the main publishing platform and automatically cross post every note and picture to Mastodon.
Otherwise I joined Mastodon with my own 1 person instance in 2019. And later PeerTube with my own instance for my family in 2020 and today I joined kbin.social just to test it before I decide if I should set up my own instance or not.
[edit:] I forgot that I set up my own Matrix server in 2020
This was kind of a interesting topic, so I copied it over and extended it with some more steps which I remembered on the way into my blog: https://jeena.net/first-exposure-fediverse
Saw a talk at a CCC Conference some years ago. Was fairly interested but at the time it was a bit quiet and you were talking to the void most of the time. But now there is much more good noise. So that's nice.
@Bicyclejohn #Gab when they joined the #Fediverse years ago.
Needless to say I left #Gab for the #Fediverse completely within a year.
Mastodon in 2017, I didn't even know matrix was part of it.
Mine was Mastodon a few weeks before the Twitter migration while searching for alternative platforms. Came back on the migration after elongated Muskrat takeover. I tried to find anyone who have the same topics as me on Friday after that migration but no one came out.
I came here when I see a post on Masto about Reddit charging their API. I immediately created a community after registering my account.
I forgot about PeerTube about where and when did I found out about it, but I remember when I first registered in a Spanish instance but I felt like it was defederated by most instances so i find another instances and registered on an Singaporean one (same username).
The problem in all of those platforms, all in my case are no one or too little people are there for my topics, but despite those issues ill never leave.
I joined Mastodon in...either late 2016 or early 2017? And really enjoyed it but couldn't find enough people to follow and not enough people I knew tried it out so I fell off of it. Came back some number of months before the big Twitter exodus so I at least got to see it in its normal calm state before that. I've tried out various fedi platforms since then.
Kinda the same here. Tried it our early, but it was kinda dead so I left. Then Twitter banned me for setting my profile name to Elon Musk, so I gave it another try and there's all kinds of activity now. Really like it.
