And people wonder why I say that he's a shit choice for a presidential candidate. Things like this his calling the very concept of a wealth tax "bullshit", his lacking response to those taking actions to expand the housing crisis, and his protection of convicted killer, PG&E, really should make it clear that, despite good things like Project Roomkey, he's still thoroughly a neolib.

"There are simply no more excuses. It's time for everyone to do their part," Newsom said in a statement.

what

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That includes our leaders, right?

Right?

[–] j4k3@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Anakin! Laser dildo Sith Lord Newsom's dong off now!

Fucking blue left state my ass. I'll vote for anyone that is not this asshat.

There are 100k homeless in the Los Angeles area. When does the civil war start.

[–] Nosavingthrow@lemmy.world 16 points 1 month ago

What an absolute bastard.

[–] AmidFuror@fedia.io 11 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Did anybody read the article?

[–] mox@lemmy.sdf.org 17 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I wonder the same thing. A lot of the commenters seem to have read the headline alone, and assumed that the story is about Newsom trying to exile or jail homeless people, but that's not what the article says. A few important points:

an executive order Thursday to direct state agencies on how to remove homeless encampments

The order makes clear that the decision to remove the encampments remains in local hands.

Newsom has worked hard to address the issue. He threw all of his political weight behind a ballot measure earlier this year to allow the state to borrow nearly $6.4 billion to build 4,350 housing units, which passed with a razor-thin margin.

[–] sunzu@kbin.run 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

6.4 billion to build 4,350 housing units

That's 1.5million per unit?

WTF sort "affordable" housing are these clown building

When are we going admit that most of this money goes into corruption?

[–] Brkdncr@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I suspect land value is the cost?

[–] sunzu@kbin.run 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Median sale price for Cali is 735k, that includes the land.

So we should getting closer to 10k house from this money.

WTF is going on

[–] Brkdncr@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Land value in major metro areas is probably a lot more.

[–] sunzu@kbin.run 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Lol... Median price is los angleles is 1 million.

That means half are sold under that price

House price inherently includes land value in it.

I don't understand what point you are trying to make about land value.

[–] Brkdncr@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

A single housing unit might cost 5m due to it being in dtla. $ per housing unit isn’t a good metric to go by in California.

[–] sunzu@kbin.run 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

$ per housing unit isn’t a good metric to go by in California.

WTF... No wonder the state has so many homeless people. And I doubt this will ever gets fixed if this how people who run shot think lol

[–] SirDerpy@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

California's western slopes of the Sierra Nevada is full of elitist, entitled neoliberals. There's another decent concentration of them around Mt. St. Helens.

While I've found pockets of all sorts of cultures all over the US, this is a special brand of asshole seemingly found only on the west (wet) side of the Sierra Nevada.

(topical break)

You're coming across so passionate it becomes aggressive. I'm not faulting you as I think such a presentation is valuable (and do the same myself sometimes). I just want you to know.

[–] ShepherdPie@midwest.social 3 points 1 month ago

Nah it's corruption just like here: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2024/04/22/san-francisco-noe-valley-toilet/73387351007/

Somehow they reduced the cost of this single restroom from $1.7M to $425k after people drew attention to it. Where do you think that extra $1.3M was going?

[–] MCasq_qsaCJ_234@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 month ago

I just read the article and I'm telling you that the Supreme Court caused this executive order.

[–] SoupBrick@yiffit.net -3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Yep, it's every bit as cruel as the title portrayed.

Under Newsom's direction, state agencies — including state parks and the Department of Transportation — would be required to prioritize clearing encampments that pose safety risks, such as those camping along waterways. Officials should give advance notice to vacate, connect homeless people to local services and help store their belongings for at least 60 days. Local cities and counties are urged to adopt similar protocols.

I guess we will just have to see how this goes to reveal the true intent behind the order. If this helps the homeless population, great! Based off of the US's track record for these events, I do not expect good things.

[–] SaltySalamander@fedia.io 5 points 1 month ago

In other words, you didn't read it.

[–] TheDemonBuer@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Homeless people and their advocates say the sweeps are cruel and a waste of taxpayer money. They say the answer is more housing, not crackdowns.

That's not how things are done in this country. In the US, poverty is a crime. We have the second highest poverty rate, among OECD nations, and we have the world's largest prison population. We have decided that is how we will handle the problem.

[–] Illogicalbit@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Agree 100%. Look up the “housing first model” and donate to non profits that do this:

https://www.caritascorp.org/

https://www.homefirstscc.org/

https://keysnonprofit.org/

https://epath.org/

Far too many states handle homelessness very poorly.

[–] sunzu@kbin.run 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Bro... I am all about direct action ans personal responsibility but we can't fucking donate our way out of homeless crisis.

This is a system issue, requires federal and state government solutoon and neither is willing to do anything about it

[–] Illogicalbit@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)
[–] sunzu@kbin.run 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

You got money to donate like that?

Most people don't and people who do have the money are largely causing the issue.

I agree with sentiment, for example avoiding plastic while lobbying for restrictions. I just don't think donating for homeless relief will do anything.

California approved 6.3 billion to build 4300 houses at USD1.5m per unit lol How much would we need to donate to his something like that?

Also, this is similar to when kids raise money to pay off the debts of poor friends to the school lol

[–] Illogicalbit@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I do donate actually, to two organizations in my state. Not huge amounts , but something comfortable for me and my finances.

I started during the pandemic when homelessness was more visible in my area and I watched the city make all the wrong moves despite my votes.

Don’t get me wrong I prefer all avenues of improving the problem should be pursued but I also admit fully that donating isn’t for everyone.

[–] EleventhHour@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

That motherfucker

[–] 314xel@lemmy.world -2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh Arnold, where art thou?

[–] radivojevic@discuss.online 4 points 1 month ago

Tbf, this was far less of an issue back then.
