If nothing else, it's a crappy military strategy.

If there's a new Civil War the NC National Guard is going to get called out.

They are going to remember the people who made them do extra work after a disaster, and also remember that the Federal government actually showed up to help.

I always like to point out that back in the day, Lincoln offered Robert E Lee command of the Army of the Potomac. Today's secessionists couldn't get a job at the Apple Store.
