With just a click, this bookmarklet will redirect you to a foreign community on your native Lemmy instance

> It brings your favourite lemmy back home!

If you don’t know what it is, it’s a bookmark that runs a small piece of code that works in all desktop or even mobile browsers

javascript:(function(){
var url = new URL(document.URL);
var baseURL = url.hostname;
var pathname = url.pathname;
window.location.href="https://slrpnk.net" + pathname + "@" + baseURL;
})();

Usage

  1. Copy the code, replace "https://slrpnk.net" in the code to URL of your native instance (for example to "https://lemmy.ca")
  2. Create a new bookmark, paste the code from previous step into URL field
  3. Go to a non native lemmy community
  4. Click the bookmarklet in your bookmarks bar to activate it.

Limitations

  • it doesn't work on pages of foreign posts: only main pages of communities

Hey all, I'm the new mod for /c/podcasts here but I've noticed none of the previous posts are showing up. I can see everything in the comment tab and when I click on the "show context" for a comment I can find the original posts.

Does anybody know why this is or how I can fix it?

As a former Redditor looking for a new home - I was first directed to Lemmy.ml - which has a stickied post asking users to find another instance to join. I was directed by an r/solarpunk moderator to this instance (makes perfect sense!) and had also seen suggestions in similar spaces to make a kbin.pub instance for myself.. somewhere in there I was thrown the idea to join Mastadon as well.

As I’ve come to understand, these all exist within Fediverse, and wherever I join I’ll be able to see and post and comment to the content of other Fediverse alt instances (although I haven’t really tried, I still don’t quite follow this - although I’m going to read up on this reply https://slrpnk.net/comment/133314 and search around myself too) - so no reason to get to caught up on where to sign it would seem.

This preface is actually somewhat a question itself (as I still don’t fully ‘get it’) and to maybe give people who have the same questions a space to ask away… at the same time it might help to contextualize my newcomer questions:

Questions on the Community

  • Are you comfortable with the Reddit refugees joining here? Is there any qualms or worries you (or anyone else, for that matter) has about this instance and an influx of users?
  • A: https://slrpnk.net/comment/133084 Be a good people here and on all of Fediverse. Join here if interested in the communities on this server

Platform/Interface Questions

  • I don’t know if this will work, @poVoq@slrpnk.net (doesn’t look like it worked) how can we @ a user?
  • A: Unknown to me, OP!
  • Are you able to sticky threads? If so, is that an admin only ability or is it possible for moderators within (or without, even) the communities too?
  • A: Unknown to OP

Questions about Subbing/Moderation

  • Is there a way to [un]subscribe, show or hide certain communities within this instance? And is there a way to track how many users are “subbed” to these communities?
  • A: Yes, if you go to a community you have the option to sub - this applies to the main pages “Subscribed” content and is the main way to see content within the beta [iOS] app. I believe there are ways to subscribe to communities in other Fediverse instances but I don’t know the easiest or most efficient way to do that yet, will update if I figure it out.
  • only way I’ve found how to subscribe to other instances is through the iOS app
  • Can certain communities be labeled as essentially “not currently active” and/or “pending moderation?” And can we see who are the moderators of any community?
  • A: I, OP, don’t know about the first part yet. But you can see who moderates each sub when you go to the sub - it has its own sidebar too
  • I would assume that the influx of expats from Reddit would be overwhelming for just the admin to ultimately manage. Is that the case? *Do moderators help?
  • A: Unknown to me the OP

Questions on Admin and Server

  • Do I have it correct that you are the sole admin? If so, thanks! And are you looking for help in the longterm or shortterm even?
  • A: https://slrpnk.net/comment/133500 on history of the server and admin.. unsure about if future help needed
  • Can there be multiple independent servers ‘hosting’ SLRPNK? Can different admins with different servers provide support (or “host”) for this instance? Would there necessarily always be a head admin? A: Unknown to me, OP
  • Is there a cap to how many users can join an instance/this instance?
  • A: https://slrpnk.net/comment/134156 nowhere near the cap, ideas for if it were reached include pausing new users or (if donations are provided) hosting on a bigger server
  • With the authority of having your own server (seemingly) and having a sole admin, is there anything we should note in terms of how this instance is hosted such as, under any circumstances if it were shut down? As kind of a floor-level question, what happens if the server goes down? Does the instance get wiped? Is it basically unusable but still archived?
  • A: Unknown to OP

I hope my questions weren’t too much!

Edit: Will add in questions post-OP noted with an *. Putting in answers (both for other users and for myself to tinker with formatting and organizational structure) any missed answers may in full be due to this OP’s lack of reading comprehension.

Also these questions aren’t just for the Admin so if anyone of you know anything that would help please leave a comment and edumacate me. Also for anything unanswered, it can take some time and know-how to get this info from others and myself in my own research, I am being patient and am suggesting as well to other newcomers please be friendly and patient too!

Here at slrpnk.net we made the decision a while ago to open community creation to all members. We hope that this will cater to contributors making this instance their home and reduce lurking.

However this comes with some responsibilities:

  1. Active moderation of communities you create (you can add additional moderators yourself though)
  2. Please add a community avatar and a basic side-bar text explaining what the community is about
  3. Make a short introduction post to tell us a bit about yourself and why you created this community (this is mandatory!)

Communities that do not adhere to this and/or are seemingly abandoned by their original creators (and no one willing to take over) will be pruned from time to time.

Our instance has been around for a while now and had its ups and downs. As a result there are some communities for which the original creators and mods are not active participants anymore.

This is especially true for those moderated solely by @ex_06 who originally started this site but handed it over to me about six months ago due to changed life priorities.

There are also a lot of communities only moderated by me, and as the current sole site admin I would like to distribute the moderation efforts a bit more.

It is not strictly necessary to have an account on slrpnk.net to become a community moderator, as Lemmy supports federated moderation. Thus if you are joining us from an remote instance feel free to apply as well.

So if any of those communities are especially interesting to you, please make a short introduction post in them and I can transfer moderation rights to you. Thanks!

Does anyone know the official way to search for topics in this app?

I was able to search and add something but it doesn't seem right.

When I "search" it can't find https://lemmy.ml/c/sopranica

I also can't get the official Lemmy app to find slrpnk.net as an instance.

I'm fairly new here and was trying to subscribe to some communities from other instances and seem to be having trouble. Are some instances blocked by ours and is there a viewable list of which ones?

With slrpnk.net disabling down voting, can posts in a local community be down voted and seen as such by users from other instances?

Context: I am considering creating a community here and want to know that will handicap features people elsewhere didn't choose to not have.

After being hosted by the Lemmy devs since March 2022 (thx!), I finally got around moving this instance to my own server today.

It is a quite beefy server (8core 32gb RAM) currently shared with a few other services provided by F-hub.org (still somewhat under construction).

Registrations are also open again (with admin approval) and I will try to approve them ASAP during the coming days.

As explained previously, ~~this instance is still running on the Lemmy dev's free hosting offer~~ which was graciously extended (thx!) a bit for me to look into transferring it to my own server.

I haven't been making as much progress with it as I hoped in recent weeks (due to various factors), but to be honest the little work that I did put into it made me realize that I am really not a big fan of the tech-stack that Lemmy uses.

As I have been running and using some other Fediverse software, I also realized that the communities-only nature of Lemmy is isolating it from the rest of the Fediverse and to be honest I am not too happy with the homegrown community lately.

So I am seriously considering a reboot of slrpnk.net using a different software and now might be a good time for it as there are only very few active users of this instance and I have to transfer it to my server soon anyway.

Options that I considered are Pixelfed (for a more creators/artist focussed instance), Akkoma (to be closer to the main Fediverse) and the new Kbin.

The linked roadmap convinced me that Kbin might be the best option. It uses a tech-stack I am much more familiar with and combines Lemmy like communities with Mastodon like microblogging.

So while I have not 100% made up my mind yet, consider this an early warning that this instance is probably going to undergo some major changes and if you would prefer to stay on Lemmy, it might be better to migrate your account somewhere else.

However Kbin is in theory compatible with Lemmy, so it might end up not such a big change after all. Do note however that there is no migration path, so accounts and communities would need to be re-created.

Let me know what you think :)

Not sure what is happening, but since a few days this instance is experiencing some strange issues with votes from some instances not being federated and thus new posts from other sources not showing up on the feeds.

I am pretty sure it isn't related to anything I did so far and suspect it is some sort of backend bug.

Small meta update:

@ex_06@slrpnk.net transferred the ownership of the slrpnk.net domain to me today. I hope he will be still around as an admin, but as we are preparing to migrate this Lemmy instance to my server it is easier that I am also in control of the domain. There might be some outage while the domain is being transferred to my DNS registrar.

Sometimes before March 2023 we need to transfer the actual instance from the current hosting kindly provided by the Lemmy developers (the one year free offer). I hope to be able to provide an as good if not better hosting (also within the EU), but it remains to be seen how that works out. In case you are wondering: I am just some guy hosting various FOSS stuff privately, so no commercial entity or anything like that involved.

Given that this will be technically a transfer of personal data under the GDPR regulations (and Lemmy doesn't have any specific GDPR compliance tools) I would like to kindly ask people with a slrpnk.net account to object here in the comments if they do not agree to me taking over. In that case I will remove their account from the database once I transfer it to my server. Or even better: just delete your account in the coming weeks.

Once things are safely transferred I will probably look into enabling additional services. My initial plan is to make XMPP chat rooms and maybe linked accounts available under the same domain.

Oh and if you are an active member and are interested in becoming an slrpnk.net admin please send me a DM. No need to be a sysadmin, as moderation etc. also needs additional help.

For now there is no option or need to donate, but I might put up a small donation link in the future if there is a demand for it.

What other services would people be interested to have available via slrpnk.net?

Keeping in mind that it should not be too resource heavy on the server I was thinking of maybe a Bookstack Wiki for collaborative writing of fiction and non-fiction?

A XMPP chat service would also be easy to add.

Sadly Lemmy currently AFAIK offers no account integration options, so that will make things a bit annoying.

New Admin here (self.meta)

Hi everyone here on slrpnk.net

You probably know me from moderating https://lemmy.ml/c/solarpunk

I was asked to join the admin team here and was thinking of moving my main account to a different instance anyways.

We will probably also move this Lemmy instance to my server when the one year free offer from the Lemmy devs runs out early next year.

I hope to run it on a very efficient ARM server powered by solar PV, but that might come a bit later :)

I posted some content in lemmy.ml. Now, When I try to post it again here, I show it under "These post may be related".

I am more than happy to use cross-posting, but I see no way to do it in either direction. Should I go ahead and post it from scratch or is there any way to crosspost, and I just could'n see it?

Hi! Lemmy's official software site has a list of public instances and I noticed that slrpnk.net isn't included. https://join-lemmy.org/instances

I think that this site could gain long-term exposure to more potential users by asking the site admins to add this instance to that list.

Coming from a large sub, people will eventually try to nitpick with verbiage.

I think it may be prudent to separate the "unless linking to..." second half of the No SPAM rule to its own, differently worded rule encompassing the allowance of regulated/occasional sharing of relevant but external work that they directly represent.
