Shoutout: we have a community here to on lemmy: !openstreetmap@lemmy.ml

[–] pietervdvn@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 year ago

Because this is a mix of the directory listing of Facebook and Instagram+bing buildings+some more stuff. And it is very liberally licensed, allowing to (slowly) import all shop information from Facebook into OSM...

Basically, a big part of the data that is missing in OSM!

Try https://mapcomplete.osm.be and pick a thematic map within your interest.

https://mapcomplete.osm.be is a website where you can easily update and add new points to OSM. It is my favourite (because I'm also the one making it).

Instead of seeing everything at once, you get to choose many thematic maps, depending on what is interesting to you (e.g. 'shops', or 'restaurants', or 'cycling related stuff', or 'what is this street named after', ...)

You can get the fully unlocked version from F-Droid as well

Hi, that is an excellent question, but I'm not entirely sure what you are trying to achieve.

Are you trying to add some virtual points to a trip you are planning? (i.e. "at this point, I will have travelled 1 mile")

Or are you trying to add physical milestones (or historical milestones) into the shared geospation database called "OpenStreetMap"?

If so, the approach will be completely different.

Well, best thing to counter that is to be the change you want to see. Start the community for the niche you miss the most/know the most about. Post something daily for two weeks + do a call for mods, and before you know you'll have at least some activity. I (helped) to bootstrap !openstreetmap@lemmy.ml this way, and the community has about 1 top level post per day on average now. Not a lot, but a good start.

Hijacking the thread:

You are all welcome on !openstreetmap@lemmy.ml to discuss anyting OpenStreetMap-related

Also have a look to https://mapcomplete.osm.be - this one works on mobile and desktop and has many thematic maps (e.g. one for shops, one for cycling stuff, one for toilets) and you can improve the data there as well + add images.

Good luck! I have to mention that I was active on the osm-community since the Reddit-failover and also included some other accounts to prove my involvement. That might have helped.

It seems like you care about !Hacking@lemmy.ml . Why don't you head over !community_requests@lemmy.ml and ask to become the moderator here? You'll probably get it easily as @qarmah didn't show any activity in the past three years.

Then you can set out the rules and influence the culture here, build a team of mods and make this a nice place. I'm trying to do the same on !openstreetmap@lemmy.ml (and yes, I got the moderator rights a few days after requesting. In a funny turn of events, the original moderator popped up again as well. I did an open call for mods, and there are 5 mods in total now.

No. Both package the same OSM-data, but they use a different binary format.
