Meme would've made more sense if they hadn't cropped it off, why did they do that?
Because it makes it into an in-joke for those of us who know what the text says
What's funny about this is their determination to violate the artists' intent for the sake of forced obfuscation, which results in the ostensible heightening of obscure knowledge for the benefit of those already possessing it.
I see nothing of value being created here. So, we're at a level slightly above Reddit right now. We did it, Lemmy!

The point was that it's not an actual pipe, but a representation of a pipe. Magritte liked being the best kind of correct.

The person who drew that pipe captioned it "This is not a pipe" in French.
For some reason it's a popular piece. I don't really like it because I prefer art to be aesthetically interesting rather than "any creative work that makes a statement."
