Hej Sweden! I am an international student at Handels, and planning to hike/trek to Sweden’s tallest mountain - Kebnekaise. I plan to fly/take the train to Kiruna, get on the bus to Nikkaluokta, and then climb up.

Few questions:

  • I am planning to do it in August, which I understand is one of the better months to hike up north. But there is a chance that I might need to push the date a bit as my friend may not get time off of work. In such a case, will this hike be doable in let’s say September - November?
  • What is the best (cheap) way to travel from Stockholm to Kiruna? Trains are recommended (at least on the blogs I have been referring to) but I am on a tight budget so not sure whether it is the best way.
  • Things that you think I should carry with me from Stockholm?
  • If you have any other tips for 2 students on a tight budget, please feel free to share!

Thank you!

Trains are expensive, might be cheaper to fly (or rent a car).

It is technically possible to climb Kebnekaise in autumn/winter, but that is much more challenging, and not recommended unless you are experienced. Snow covers the trails, and the weather will not be nice. Requires a lot more preparation.

I see, thank you! So you’d say that I shouldn’t push it later than September?

September is a very good month to climb but after that it quickly turns cold and the climb hike will be hard for a beginner.

how experienced are you when it comes to hiking? are you planning on sleeping in a tent? and if you plan on hiking in late september onwards, are you used to putting up a tent in a snow storm? there is plenty of information online.

Here is some basic information about the ascent itself. (keep in mind there is a day of hiking before you even get to start the ascent.)

I wouldn’t say I am a pro but I have hiked a lot in my country (Himalayas), and the mountains there are next level. Having said that, I have no experience with trekking in snowstorms.

Ideally, I would like to complete the trail in a single day - complete the ascent and descend to the mountain station.

Edit: Thanks btw!

the mountain station (STF Kebnekaise) is not open year round (closes mid sep) so if you go later than that you have to bring your own tent and also expect a lot of snow.

if you plan on sleeping at STF Keb then it's a full day trip to the top and back (no one sleeps at the top) so that's fine. I've seen plenty of people assuming they could go from nikkaluokta to the peak of keb and then back to nikka in one day with IS doable, but not for the normal person. only experienced and well trained mountain runners would do that so I just wanted to make sure that wasn't your plan.

All in all, I would suggest aiming for august for the best chances and a less demanding trip. still, don't forget it's a glacier up there and dress accordingly (or bring clothes with you).

Thanks again! Yeah I don’t thinkI can come back to Nikka on the same day - it is about 35+ Km return trip hah.

Isn’t the glacier part a concern only on one of the routes? I think the eastern route?

the glacier is the top so...if you're heading up there it doesn't matter which route you take. there will be snow and ice at the top.

You can get cheap flights from Stockholm to Kiruna if you are under the age of 25.

Also I wouldn't go later than the first week of august

Which airline?

Unfortunately I won’t be eligible for the discount then. Does this airline have a student criterion or just the age?

And about the time, the earliest I can do is mid-August. I hope that it is not too late!

I meant to write September, August is fine.

The airline is SAS, and they don't have student discounts to my knowledge.

Since you don't qualify for the youth discount, I dont think there will be a big difference in price between train and plane

Probably not but the train will take something like 15-20 hours :D

So you burn at least two days of the trip when going by train.

Well flying makes more sense then, even though I guess a train journey would be more scenic :|

My two cents:

  • Dont push it any further than early to mid-september. Not only will it be really cold after that, but the resources for handling emergency situations are very limited off season. Snow also makes it a lot harder to navigate.
  • Try to stay for a few days. The weather is really unpredictable and visability is bad most days.
  • Bring a tent + all the food you need. It’s really expensive to stay at the keb station.
  • Bring winter clothes! The temperature varies a lot, and you can often hike in a t-shirt, but I have also experienced snow and temperatures below 0 in august. Don’t make the mistake of assuming you will have ok weather.
  • bring a tiny shovel if you think you will need to shit on the road. People shit everywhere and just leave it. Dont do that!
  • Bring some ”varma koppen” (soup in a cup) or other soup in powder form and some warm water. Its feels really nice to drink something warm if the weather turns bad.
