Hej Sweden! I am an international student at Handels, and planning to hike/trek to Sweden’s tallest mountain - Kebnekaise. I plan to fly/take the train to Kiruna, get on the bus to Nikkaluokta, and then climb up.
Few questions:
- I am planning to do it in August, which I understand is one of the better months to hike up north. But there is a chance that I might need to push the date a bit as my friend may not get time off of work. In such a case, will this hike be doable in let’s say September - November?
- What is the best (cheap) way to travel from Stockholm to Kiruna? Trains are recommended (at least on the blogs I have been referring to) but I am on a tight budget so not sure whether it is the best way.
- Things that you think I should carry with me from Stockholm?
- If you have any other tips for 2 students on a tight budget, please feel free to share!

jr9k7xnthe mountain station (STF Kebnekaise) is not open year round (closes mid sep) so if you go later than that you have to bring your own tent and also expect a lot of snow.
if you plan on sleeping at STF Keb then it's a full day trip to the top and back (no one sleeps at the top) so that's fine. I've seen plenty of people assuming they could go from nikkaluokta to the peak of keb and then back to nikka in one day with IS doable, but not for the normal person. only experienced and well trained mountain runners would do that so I just wanted to make sure that wasn't your plan.
All in all, I would suggest aiming for august for the best chances and a less demanding trip. still, don't forget it's a glacier up there and dress accordingly (or bring clothes with you).

Isn’t the glacier part a concern only on one of the routes? I think the eastern route?

jra2zjlthe glacier is the top so...if you're heading up there it doesn't matter which route you take. there will be snow and ice at the top.
