Hej Sweden! I am an international student at Handels, and planning to hike/trek to Sweden’s tallest mountain - Kebnekaise. I plan to fly/take the train to Kiruna, get on the bus to Nikkaluokta, and then climb up.

Few questions:

  • I am planning to do it in August, which I understand is one of the better months to hike up north. But there is a chance that I might need to push the date a bit as my friend may not get time off of work. In such a case, will this hike be doable in let’s say September - November?
  • What is the best (cheap) way to travel from Stockholm to Kiruna? Trains are recommended (at least on the blogs I have been referring to) but I am on a tight budget so not sure whether it is the best way.
  • Things that you think I should carry with me from Stockholm?
  • If you have any other tips for 2 students on a tight budget, please feel free to share!

Thank you!

My two cents:

  • Dont push it any further than early to mid-september. Not only will it be really cold after that, but the resources for handling emergency situations are very limited off season. Snow also makes it a lot harder to navigate.
  • Try to stay for a few days. The weather is really unpredictable and visability is bad most days.
  • Bring a tent + all the food you need. It’s really expensive to stay at the keb station.
  • Bring winter clothes! The temperature varies a lot, and you can often hike in a t-shirt, but I have also experienced snow and temperatures below 0 in august. Don’t make the mistake of assuming you will have ok weather.
  • bring a tiny shovel if you think you will need to shit on the road. People shit everywhere and just leave it. Dont do that!
  • Bring some ”varma koppen” (soup in a cup) or other soup in powder form and some warm water. Its feels really nice to drink something warm if the weather turns bad.
