Hello everyone from Sweden! You may get annoyed with us Americans, so do I. But I have a lot of ancestry from Sweden and I'm very interested to meet some of you and learn more about Sweden in general. Music, food, pop culture, slang. All of it.

I play video games (of course) and love space and science. I'd love to make a discord and get to know some of you, maybe play some games on steam as well.

Since this is reddit, you may already be exposed to much American media and culture, but I can offer to teach you anything you'd like about America or explain any current events over here as well.

Nice to meet all of you in advance, adjö!

Welcome, leave any far right MAGA crap and religion at the door and you'll be more than welcome. Swedes generally don't care about heritage, we all speak English and we often find foreigners interesting. :)

Brother (or sister) as an American. I HATE maga. You couldn't even fathom my disappointment in my country over what the far right has done.

But man am I glad to hear you also have a sour taste for that stupidity. It's eating us alive over here bahaha

Mostly multiplayer games. Hunt showdown, Battlebit, league of legends, arma, GTA, squad, stardew, space engineers, factorio.

You?

I..... Have wasted so much time in that game.

I LOVE that game. But then you forget to turn on a thruster or two, lift off, crash into your base, load last save 😂

Don't mind that asshole. Most swedes love sharing their culture with anyone and everyone, and we certainly enjoy alot of american culture ourselves.

Never a bad idea to try and make friends across national borders. Our countries have alot of things in common, and some things not so much. How's your day been so far man?

[–] Dannebot@leddit.danmark.party 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Weewoofiatruck (OP) at 2023-07-08 07:06:39+00:00 ID: jr4kda0

Not bad! Thanks for asking. I live in St. Louis Missouri. Middle of America. And lately we've gotten some very bad storms. Flooded my yard a little.

That's what I'm interested in. Things we have in common and things we don't. From politics to cartoons we watched as kids.

I could Google all day about Sweden, but I find it better to meet some and add them on discord and just share things. I've met a couple Russians, Ukrainians, Koreans and Italians doing such. But I have actual ancestry from Sweden (although they left in roughly 1780) but hell, I have some distant relatives out there if they're still alive haha

colin_is_bald at 2023-07-08 11:04:53+00:00 ID: jr51ewt

Hope the yard's fine! We've had alot of rain here in Gothenburg as well, but nothing majorly flooded as far as I know. There's one of the interesting differences by the way: extreme weathers. We don't see any of that in sweden, nor earthquakes, or mountain lions, or venomous snakes. For most of us here, the notion of being in any sort of danger from nature itself feels pretty alien. Sure, moose are kinda dangerous, but its very rare that you encounter them close up.

How's St. Louis otherwise? I must admit to not knowing much about it, or Missouri.

Well this is going to be a bit of an emotional roller coaster for you, but Swedish people love America. We'll pretend not to, but we're drenched up to our ears in American culture and few if any seem to be working to actively change that. So many "critics" are lying to themselves.

People mostly whine about politics. So swedish reddit spaces are not going to be an accurate representation of our sentiment as a whole, keep that in mind.

Anyyway. Been going through a bit of a "yee-haw" phase recently, so if you happen to live on a ranch anywhere in the great plains region we could set up a "trading-places" sort of deal for a month or two 😉

Weewoofiatruck (OP) at 2023-07-08 07:03:06+00:00 ID: jr4k3r2

Hahaha, I'm from Saint Louis, Missouri. I live in a more 'ghetto' city. But the state itself is farm and country. Missouri is on the Great plains.

Do you recommend a better place to meet swedes? I checked out flashback, but I was clueless on how to post/use it.

And honestly, I would love to talk politics. I'm pretty non-biased and hate most of my politicians equally. I've read some stuff about Sweden lately, mostly religious politics. But I do love talking about it and learning.

There is a saying 'you can ask the butcher about the cut of steak, or stick your head in the cows ass and see for yourself'

Not the best saying; but instead of posts about Sweden, I'd like to just ask the swedish themselves.

That's perfect! I'll be over to herd to bison with an AR-15 around noon tomorrow then! I myself live around an hour from Göteborg (Swedens second largest city) close to lake Vänern.

Flashback is sort of the "everything goes" forum of the Swede-net. You can find interesting conversations about virtually anything there, but it's also a place where the more extreme fringes of swedish society tend to congregate (which could be interesting if you enjoy politics of course. Site is kinda clunky to use though and reddit is probably better for a non-swedish speaker).

Yeah a lot of things happening here at the moment, we had some real nice weather last month, so basically some of us started burning qurans (trust me, it makes sense).

I enjoy sticking my head up farm animals asses as much as the next Swede, just better be ready for the wall of shit likely to come your way at first. Any specific questions just shoot, I'll answer to the best of my ability.

Well let me ask about the Quran burning since I've read about it and you brought it up.

Why? What caused it and why do it?

[–] Dannebot@leddit.danmark.party 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Danne_H at 2023-07-08 08:37:17+00:00 ID: jr4qxhq

Sure. So Swedish society has gone through a couple of decades of rapid demographic change (it's nothing as crazy as is often portrayed, "Swedistan" etc. But it is noticeable and it has presented large issues).

As a result, Islam has gone from something that didn't really exist in the minds of many, to something our society now actually has to decide on how to functionally incorporate. Most Swedes are secular, most muslims (non-U.S) are traditional, add one of europes most far-reaching freedom of expression legislations into the mix and you're bound to have clashes.

At first basically a few people on the hard right organised quran-burning events (personal/PR reasons aside) mostly to expose the issues these differences in values/way of life present to our country.

Now it's turned into a thing where people from allover the political spectrum want to do it. A formerly torturted Iraqi refugee just did it in protest of Islam. You have leftist wanting to do it to delay/hinder our NATO application (Turkey is not a fan of them) now even crazy cat-ladies want their time in the spot-light.

Ahh, well this makes sense.

Different problems require different approaches.

Just because I need a screw driver for a screw in America shouldn't mean I think you're crazy for using a hammer if you have a nail.

Also turkey is a real bitch about most things. Especially NATO. Sorry if that offends anyone in this reddit but turkey's government has been hard to watch as a foreigner

Danne_H at 2023-07-08 08:47:58+00:00 ID: jr4ro1n

Yeah you're not going to get much push-back there. Turkeys government is opportunistic as fuck.

I wonder how many F-16's our NATO entry is going to cost you guys in the end.

Many many games. Recently? Hunt showdown, Battlebit, stationeers (Jesus that game is hard), league of legends (I'm not great at it), ghost hunter (or anything scary. I'm a wimp so it makes them better), factorio and satisfactory.

But I play what ever is multiplayer and anyone else is playing haha.

How about you?

Well, we all have a lot of Swedish ancestry. And a lot from other European countries. But nobody cares. That is an American thing you have to leave behind. It’s like that thread about the American guy that was deeply offended that people in Poland didn’t treat him as royalty because he was an American with polish ancestry. Anyway good luck with the friend hunt.

It very much is an American thing.

"300 years is a long time in America, 300 miles is a long way in Europe"

We're all immigrants and mutts here with no real tie to the land we own. So many of us do seek our ancestry out of pure curiosity and it drives learning worldly knowledge and cultures hopefully.

Thanks!

svenne at 2023-07-08 11:23:30+00:00 ID: jr52xmg

We will generally have hard time to connect with you having Swedish ancestry 300 years ago etc. But if you are able to track down where your Swedish ancestors come from, if it's a small place, and you go there and talk with the local Swedes. Then you might get people excited to talk to you, especially curious about how it went for your ancestors.

Hi there friend!

I feel sorry for you that you need to excuse yourself the first thing you do. As someone else mentioned people might be annoyed at politics, not the american people.

Eitherway space and science is cool so I will offer you this as an insight to our society.

Swedish people have a larger area that they perceive as their personal space than people from other countries. Standing at arms length is comfortable enough if talking to someone you don't know very well, but with strangers in public spaces we would prefer more of a distance if possible.

Also https://www.reddit.com/r/TillSverige/ is a subreddit dedicated to moving to Sweden but it is also a great place for questions.

Not really, the sure fire way to spot an American in Sweden (or Europe in general) is that they’re talking much louder than everyone else. If you ever go to Europe to a place with a lot of American tourists you should try and see how many you can spot by volume alone
