Hello everyone from Sweden! You may get annoyed with us Americans, so do I. But I have a lot of ancestry from Sweden and I'm very interested to meet some of you and learn more about Sweden in general. Music, food, pop culture, slang. All of it.

I play video games (of course) and love space and science. I'd love to make a discord and get to know some of you, maybe play some games on steam as well.

Since this is reddit, you may already be exposed to much American media and culture, but I can offer to teach you anything you'd like about America or explain any current events over here as well.

Nice to meet all of you in advance, adjö!

Hahaha, I'm from Saint Louis, Missouri. I live in a more 'ghetto' city. But the state itself is farm and country. Missouri is on the Great plains.

Do you recommend a better place to meet swedes? I checked out flashback, but I was clueless on how to post/use it.

And honestly, I would love to talk politics. I'm pretty non-biased and hate most of my politicians equally. I've read some stuff about Sweden lately, mostly religious politics. But I do love talking about it and learning.

There is a saying 'you can ask the butcher about the cut of steak, or stick your head in the cows ass and see for yourself'

Not the best saying; but instead of posts about Sweden, I'd like to just ask the swedish themselves.

That's perfect! I'll be over to herd to bison with an AR-15 around noon tomorrow then! I myself live around an hour from Göteborg (Swedens second largest city) close to lake Vänern.

Flashback is sort of the "everything goes" forum of the Swede-net. You can find interesting conversations about virtually anything there, but it's also a place where the more extreme fringes of swedish society tend to congregate (which could be interesting if you enjoy politics of course. Site is kinda clunky to use though and reddit is probably better for a non-swedish speaker).

Yeah a lot of things happening here at the moment, we had some real nice weather last month, so basically some of us started burning qurans (trust me, it makes sense).

I enjoy sticking my head up farm animals asses as much as the next Swede, just better be ready for the wall of shit likely to come your way at first. Any specific questions just shoot, I'll answer to the best of my ability.

Well let me ask about the Quran burning since I've read about it and you brought it up.

Why? What caused it and why do it?

Some backstory.

Last year there was a danish guy that wanted to get into swedish politics. He was far on the right side and he wanted to prove/show that muslims cannot function in a western civilization.

To do this, he said all it takes is to burn one book and there will be mayhem.

Last year there were some riots in a reaction to this. He went on a full tour in most swedish big cities and semi big cities. People got hurt. Shots were fired. I think both police horses and police dogs were also hurt.

Since then, the police have not really given out permission to anyone that has requested a political demonstration through burning the quaran since it has been some saftey issues. Both from within the nation but also from outside.

A lot of people has critiqued this since it is in your right to protest and do demonstrations. It is one of our four fundamental laws.

A court recently said quaran burnings was okay again and there is really nothing the police can do according to the law to stop them in general.

So to the recent one. One anti goverment iraqi citizen. Wished to protest against the iraqi goverment. How they use islam to control and use it to prison, kill and torture people. Like he was himself before he could escape and seek refuge in Sweden.

His point is that he thinks that islam is dangerous and it is his right to show his anger and how much he dislikes the religion.

He chose one of their most holy days and outside of a holy place to get a hattrick in provocation.

It is a bit complicated and this is just a short summery from my interpretation. I could be wrong since I did not fact check everything but tldr. In Sweden you are allowed to protest and demonstrate for whatever you want legally. There are some exeptions like doing the nazi salute, some forms of structural discrimination (which is a spicey subject in itself) and slander(lying that someone is,for example, a criminal to hurt their reputatio).

Is there any fear that he's being used to help promote someone's view? Or do you truly think he burnt the Quran on his own will?

Paranoia of such is a very common thing in America because... Well it happens often here.

His motive and reason checks out. He was in conflict with the goverment. He was imprisoned and tortured by them.

A lot of countries and goverments around the world uses their religion as a way to control and legitimize their own actions.

There are some that do gain from an escalation from the angry fundementalists. Mainly authorities in other countries that can get influence over Swedish's politics. But also people who are against Nato, people that that say that "All it takes is to burn a pocket book you can buy at 7/11 for 5$ for a huge reaction and muslims to riot. Drawing up a conclution that muslims are dangerous."

But I dont think people in general is that fearful of that person being used. SInce all people here have that right. If a group wants to do a political action, they will most likely do it themselves.

Ahh, yeah we know of that all too well.

We say all groups can group and protest. But many will raise an eyebrow if that group is not Christian and white

Sure. So Swedish society has gone through a couple of decades of rapid demographic change (it's nothing as crazy as is often portrayed, "Swedistan" etc. But it is noticeable and it has presented large issues).

As a result, Islam has gone from something that didn't really exist in the minds of many, to something our society now actually has to decide on how to functionally incorporate. Most Swedes are secular, most muslims (non-U.S) are traditional, add one of europes most far-reaching freedom of expression legislations into the mix and you're bound to have clashes.

At first basically a few people on the hard right organised quran-burning events (personal/PR reasons aside) mostly to expose the issues these differences in values/way of life present to our country.

Now it's turned into a thing where people from allover the political spectrum want to do it. A formerly torturted Iraqi refugee just did it in protest of Islam. You have leftist wanting to do it to delay/hinder our NATO application (Turkey is not a fan of them) now even crazy cat-ladies want their time in the spot-light.

Ahh, well this makes sense.

Different problems require different approaches.

Just because I need a screw driver for a screw in America shouldn't mean I think you're crazy for using a hammer if you have a nail.

Also turkey is a real bitch about most things. Especially NATO. Sorry if that offends anyone in this reddit but turkey's government has been hard to watch as a foreigner

Yeah you're not going to get much push-back there. Turkeys government is opportunistic as fuck.

I wonder how many F-16's our NATO entry is going to cost you guys in the end.

It's Turkey that's going to get the fighter jets. We make our own stuff, we're smol America in that regard as we also make a bit of money selling weapons all over the world.
