Video Game Art

Video games are not mere time killers. They are albums of sound, aesthetics, animation and narrative.

This community is in appreciation of that. Screenshots, fanart, animations, gameplay clips. It is all welcome here.

The one common thread should be an eye for the aesthetic. This is not a place to discuss mechanics or stats, but to show off simply the artistic, expressed through the video game medium.

  1. All rules of the parent instance apply. That is, sopuli.xyz
  2. Include the name of the game your post is associated with in the post title.
  3. If your post is fanart, include a link to the artist in post body, if you can. You may also ping @saucechan@ani.social to have it attempt to find the source for you, and provide it in a comment.
  4. MARK ANY TEXT SPOILERS, as for art, do not post content that outright spoils key moments of a games narrative. Content that can only be understood with the context of having played the game, is ok.
  5. No generative AI art.

Tell me, and I'll try and track down some good pieces to post. Still have plenty in stock, but never too early to collect ideas for more. You are of course welcome to post pieces yourself, as well!

I'm particularly interested in a wide range of genres, and older games. The game medium has existed for a while now, and I'd love to appreciate some of the earlier efforts of game creators.

The Dishonored series has some incredible art. When playing through the games, I'll often stop and admire the in-game paintings. Here's one of Addermire Institute, one of the locations in Dishonored 2.

True! Please do make some posts if you like.

Otherwise I'll add it to the list of pretty games for me to eventually get to :D

Pentiment 😍

It's a great game too!

[–] MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 year ago

Cool! You should make a post!

Not old at all but Ori and the Will of the Wisps has the best hand drawn 2D art I've seen

[–] MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 year ago

Oh yeah, Ori needs to be on my list. Feel free to post yourself as well!

It's not an older game, but I absolutely love the art in Book of Travels

Wow, that is a game with an artstyle! I'll probably post some of that, but you should do it if you're up for it.

Virginia is a game with some really good looking art.

The Swapper. Hand crafted clay art scanned into a game. Gorgeous.

[–] MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ah! And a beautiful, haunting, story, too.

I'm gonna post some screens

far: lone sails

i love the art style in that game,

particularly the oppidomotive

also to a lesser extent, far: changing tides

and i'm quite fond of: bastion/transistor, hollow knight, little nightmares, and rime (i realise none of these are particularly old)

[–] Zeus@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

also adding sea of solitude, and submerged because i'm a sucker for post apocalyptic submerged cities

(i forgot these because they're not in my steam library)

[–] MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You have a really good list! All of those have merit, feel free to post them yourself if you have screenshots, or find good ones.

~~i should, shouldn't i~~ never mind i forgot i lost all my f:ls screenshots.. i'll see if i can find anything i like in any forgotten folders

what's your policy on spoilers, by the way?

[–] MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Hmmm. That's a good question. I'd say stick to content that doesn't spoil the story of a game.

Stuff that's meaningless without context is fine with me, tho.

I'll think about it further and add a rule to the sidebar.

[–] Zeus@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

yeah i don't know the solution - i wouldn't really want to join a lemmysphere rife with spoilers, but a lot of games' best scenes are spoilers

i'm looking forward to #3185 being implemented

Remember me.

Not an old game but it's made with RPG Maker, so it fits into the retro aesthetic. Omori. The devs have really captured the isolating yourself in an ideal fantasy world situation. It's a literal masterpiece, both in story, gameplay, art, ost everything. Yeah I'm an Omori fan, how could you tell? XD

I am new to this community and so glad I found a place dedicated to artwork. I am a huge fan of game art, official or otherwise. It was disappointing to find AI-generated artwork is allowed here though, considering it steals from artists and does not credit them. I'm sorry if this isn't the right way to discuss this, or if I'm being the vocal minority.

It's honestly difficult to avoid. At its best, AI generation is used as a starting point by artists who know how to improve on the result to make it their own, and in these cases the fact that AI generation was used might only be evident in how fast the artist in question is able to produce their pieces.

As for the issue of training data and how licensing should work around acquiring the datasets used to train the models, that's a discussion that the community really isn't for. Suffice to say, I think these models are standing upon the shoulders of artists past, and that should be taken into consideration in their creation and use, in way that currently isn't happening.

I'll enact rules if someone starts spamming posts of straight unedited output, but until then I don't mind posting the occasional curated piece that is a cut above the rest of the flood.
