That is a big problem with Little Free Libraries- they get filled with religious junk. OP, please do your best to weed the books regularly.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.one 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah, not big on propaganda, I expect to see lots of Watchtowers, Books of Mormon, etc. Will be checking daily.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Excellent! Good luck!

[–] UnPassive@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Huge problem with these in my town. Some have two sections and say to keep religious texts in the designated one

[–] krewjew@lemmy.world 19 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Snowcrash is awesome, your free library doesn’t mail books does it ? 😂

[–] klemptor@lemmy.ml 12 points 1 year ago (3 children)

I keep hearing that but I couldn't get through it! It just didn't hold my attention.

[–] Chathtiu@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That’s how I feel about Neuromancer and most other cyberpunk books.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.one 5 points 1 year ago

I found Snow Crash the easiest of his to get through. Love the Deliverator and Uncle Enzo. Would love a film version with Jason Momoa as Raven.

Stormlight Archives blows mistborn out of the water for me personally.

[–] krewjew@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not in the slightest. Much closer to traditional fantasy than anything, but much more modern than what you would get from Tolkien or the wheel of time

[–] nitefox@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Wasn’t there a sci-fi serie in there or am I misremembering hard? Anyway I’m reading Mistborn (very slowly), it’s fucking good

[–] krewjew@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Sanderson does have some sci fi stuff like Rekoners and Skyward that are not part of the same universe as mistborn and stormlight. I haven’t read them though, so I can’t give much of an opinion

[–] nitefox@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah, I have Skyward in my very long backlog

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.one 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Nope, but if you find yourself in Portland... ;)

[–] SameOldJorts@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Be there as soon as the traffic dies down on 26 (kidding)

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.one 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It won't be ready, ready until the 9th. My kid got me the untreated fence post and bench and bare wood isn't going to hold up in Oregon rain, so this weekend is priming and painting, then the install is going to happen Saturday the 9th.

The library itself is weatherproof, made from recycled milk jugs of all things!

[–] SameOldJorts@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Very cool :) if I’m ever in the area I’ll have to swing by. I love LFLs. I consider it my mission to drop off a couple of books a month to the ones near me on dog walks as an excuse to check what’s been left there haha. Someone near me is also a sci-fi/speclit enthusiast and I like to think we’re supplementing each other’s purchases.

Maus, HHGTTG, Snowcrash. You've got a great selection there, fellow sci-fi fan! Hopefully others who borrow appreciate it as well.

[–] pingveno@kbin.social 9 points 1 year ago

That's what I was think. Usually 90% of the books are, shall we say, there for a reason. But OP has seeded this library with some high quality material. Hopefully it stays that way!

Putting Maus, They Called us Enemy and Nat Turner may be too much in the initial batch, but we're on a school route and that's the sort of stuff they won't get in school. :)

[–] transientpunk@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I love it. I would love to make one of these and include a section for banned books

I have a copy of Maus II that Art Spiegelman signed and also drew a picture in because he messed up my name and felt bad. Nice guy.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.one 3 points 1 year ago

That's fantastic! A real keeper!

[–] BossDj@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Wait does yours have multiple cubbies?

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.one 3 points 1 year ago

Nope, just the one. Non-Fiction on the right, fiction on the left.

I separated them for the photos so you could see all the books.

[–] NZV65572@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago

Upvoted for Douglas adams

[–] Chathtiu@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

I love the addition of Snow Crash. I never see SF books in free libraries.

Edit: And Charles De Lint! You never see him these days. Kick ass free library, OP

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.one 5 points 1 year ago

Fun fact: Circle of Cats and Cats of Tanglewood Forest are the same story. One is a kids picture book, the other a chapter book.

[–] Nunya@lemdro.id 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Is that your home address on the little sign? If so, you may want to crop that out of your photos.

Awesome Little Free Library though. We have several in our neighborhood and I really appreciate the community service.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.one 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's the address for the library. We're good!

I wish I had property with which to do this. During the pan, I would take long walks to neighborhoods surrounding me while listening to podcasts. I always noted where these appeared. I hope you have success spreading the joy of reading.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.one 3 points 1 year ago

When you register a library, they post it on the map in their app for your location so you can easily see all the Little Libraries around you!

[–] KazuyaDarklight@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Needs more "Dealing with Dragons", for the kids.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.one 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

We're rounding up more this weekend, I'll see if I can turn it up!

Great selection!

[–] chibimagic@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

I love little libraries! I stop and browse every time I walk past one in my city.

[–] clearedtoland@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

I’m just here to say I love projects like these. Maybe I’ll be inspired to actually follow through and make one myself someday.

Recently started taking my toddler to the library and, despite being an avid reader, I’d forgotten how wondrous an experience it is.

[–] Lehulk@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Stillwater is the best, even as a parent I learn from these stories. Great selection !

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.one 2 points 1 year ago

I've been a huge fan of Jon J. Muth ever since Moonshadow:

Ha, looking at this post and there's exactly 42 comments, guess I've spoilt it now!

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.one 3 points 1 year ago

This is why we can't have nice things! ;)

Library is live as of 9/9, and the first two books have gone out into the wild!

Both non-fiction.

The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat - Oliver Sacks

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Man_Who_Mistook_His_Wife_for_a_Hat

Maus - Art Spiegelman - Pulitzer Prize winner

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maus

Both excellent choices!
