With the reddit API debacle far in the review, I'm wondering if any of you went back to the platform.

I use it for a couple of communities specifically for foreigners living in Japan as it's a great source of info from people who've been here longer than I have or have dealt with situations I have not. It's also useful for info on dealing with the obscenity that being an American citizen trying to invest for retirement while overseas brings (I can't use the ISA here or other tax-advantaged things because the US government considers them all PFICs which removes any tax advantage and causes even more pain after that).

I deleted my account, but still use it for information on occasion. I use a front end for it when I do.

[–] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 2 points 59 minutes ago

Same here. Reddit is purely an addition I put in Google now. I come to Lemmy for all my socializing. I have come to enjoy you weirdos, and thanks for accepting another weirdo :)

[–] phoneymouse@lemmy.world 4 points 1 hour ago

I want Lemmy to be a viable alternative and do use it. But, the lack of niche communities makes it harder. I do go back to Reddit from time to time for that fix and to keep up with a few things.

[–] bonn2@lemm.ee 22 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

When searching for info, yes. But just daily use and scrolling no

[–] Asafum@feddit.nl 7 points 3 hours ago (2 children)

Exactly.

I didn't delete my account, but I've never logged back in after they killed 3rd party apps last year and don't visit unless it's a direct result from a search.

[–] billbasher@lemmy.world 1 points 16 minutes ago

I just deleted all my content but didn’t delete my account. Agreed though there is some useful information on there

[–] revlayle@lemm.ee 4 points 1 hour ago

Same, but I did delete my account.

Still will read results anonymously via a search tho.

[–] Paradachshund@lemmy.today 2 points 1 hour ago

I end up there sometimes but I don't seek it out anymore. I don't have the app on my phone.

[–] mp3@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Only when a contact sends me a Reddit link, which I open through Geddit as to not give them any ad revenue, and I do not comment or vote at all.

I don't actively search for stuff fhere either.

[–] Big_Boss_77@lemmynsfw.com 1 points 55 minutes ago

Thanks for the info neighbor, downloaded straight away.

[–] NegativeLookBehind@lemmy.world 5 points 2 hours ago

Fuck Reddit

[–] Zarxrax@lemmy.world 9 points 3 hours ago

There are a few communities on there which I still check, but I spend a significantly less amount of time on Reddit than I used to. I also refuse to post anything or interact on that site anymore.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 14 points 4 hours ago

Not really. I've stopped by a few times because I was looking for specific information and that's where it was to be found, but other than that, I went from checking in dozens of times a day to quitting could turkey.

[–] Vanth@reddthat.com 9 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Like many others on here, only to search for some specific information. And never logged in to an account anymore.

I miss sports game threads. The Lemmy communities are just not taking off enough for me. I am tempted to open up a reddit account for talking shit in game threads only.

[–] Dsklnsadog@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 3 hours ago

Do it, enjoy your life, don't feel bad.

[–] sxan@midwest.social 15 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

No. They ban VPNs, so if I happen to follow a link that leads there, I get the "login to see this" page, shrug, and go somewhere else.

It's easy to circumvent, but rarely worth the effort. The content was getting mostly shit-worthless even before I left. It's only gotten worse.

There's not useful, factual information on 4chan, these days.

[–] SendMePhotos@lemmy.world 4 points 4 hours ago

Same. Same reason. Same thing.

I will admit that I've gone to reddit on a VPN with no sign in to look at 🎶porn-o-graphy🎶!

[–] Jezebelley@sh.itjust.works -1 points 4 hours ago

I think if you have an account you can still use a VPN.

[–] doc@fedia.io 1 points 2 hours ago

Subscribed to the RSS for the one very local niche sub that i haven't found a substitute for. Other than just incidental search results that take me there.

[–] ccunning@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Not really. I left in support of the mod strike/blackout and I stayed away because of Spez’ total bullshit WRT the API.

Sometimes Reddit is still the best place to get or find an answer. As long as old.reddit.com remains functional, I will go and participate while engaging with a question I post.

I was a pretty big contributor before, too. Not like recognizable username big, but big enough to get an IPO invite ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[–] RagingHungryPanda@lemm.ee 2 points 2 hours ago

I don't. I recently logged in just to see what i was missing. More than half my front page was ads, the next 30% was repost bots posting the generic questions for engagement. There were maybe 2-3 posts that were actual posts. I left.

[–] sbv@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 hours ago

Yup. My town has a pretty active subreddit, and the Cyberpunk RED subreddit has great material.

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 9 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Nope, Spez or one of his admin goonies fixed that for me.

Perma-banned, for stating facts about Elon Musk and his Boring Company's 'Not A Flamethrower'

Obligatory FUCK SPEZ

[–] scottmeme@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Spez and his admin goonies*

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 3 points 2 hours ago

Inclusive AND 😂

[–] FaceDeer@fedia.io 3 points 3 hours ago

I never left, I just started using both.

Probably the "final straw" would be shutting down old.Reddit. Unless they do something else unexpectedly awful that I haven't thought of.

Occasionally I'll use Redreader to check in and see if there is anything worth looking at. But for most of my scrolling and all of my comments I end up back on here.

[–] WhiteOakBayou@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

Not really. Sometimes I'm there from search results but never logged in. Rif was reddit for me.

[–] hoshikarakitaridia@lemmy.world 4 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

Only when I'm googling a question and I see an answer in reddit.

Never interacting tho.

[–] remotelove@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 hours ago

Not unless a random search takes me there for a non-answer to my obscure question.

[–] satanmat@lemmy.world 4 points 4 hours ago

Generally no. R/ sysadmin is very helpful; but I usually end up there from a search rather than browsing reddit

[–] NotSteve_@lemmy.ca 3 points 4 hours ago

I spend most of my time on Lemmy but when I'm on a desktop I'll check reddit occasionally. I refuse to interact at all though

[–] Pyflixia@kbin.melroy.org 2 points 4 hours ago

I've only registered to it when I feel I need to interact a little more than few on here. I'd last long enough until I'm shadowbanned or banned outright because of a report from an overly-sensitive redditard.

I keep registering just out of spite though because if Reddit cared about alts or shit, they'd re-tool their registration by now. But, Reddit never learns anything so why not keep abusing it.

It's only been getting longer between times though before I consider re-registering again. Just playing the whole ban evading whack-a-mole with them. But I do make my feelings known time to time about Spez because that shithead can still go fuck himself and that stupid grin of his.

[–] wirelesswire@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 hours ago

I didn't visit Reddit for 8 months or so after the API fiasco, but gradually started going back for a handful of niche communities whose fediverse counterparts are dead or nonexistent.

i only use it when attempting to lure people to the 'verse from that terrible, bot-ridden cesspool
