Is this yet another crypto project?

Blaming a privacy respecting app for a minority group is lame af. That's how we lose all personal freedoms.

Tewowists & paedophiles.

Agreed.

Without concepts of privacy; things will soon fall into fascism.

privacy respecting? telegram!

is that sarcasm or misinformation?

[–] kbal@fedia.io 47 points 1 week ago

They are presumably referring to SimpleX. Although I don't actually see anyone blaming it for the existence of Nazis.

Telegram is not private

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 76 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That's how encrypted messagers work. Anyone can use then for any purpose. It is actually very reassuring that it has become so popular. Just to be clear I am not endorsing Neo Nazis.

Also I like how Simplex Chat doesn't have user facing identifiers. (People can't DM you)

The only concern I have is the public group chats but because I don't use that feature it isn't a big deal for me personally.

(People can’t DM you)

This is false. However, you must generate an "identifier / group / channel" for them and share that link out-of-band to them." Basically it means nobody can slide into your DMs unless you yourself consent to it and forge a connection with them to do so. It does offer a way to invite other users to chat; but the other user must consent as well...which makes it far safer usually.

In other words, it's the same effect as when you make separate identities to share with different contacts on any messaging service. SimpleX has adopted that as the normal way to operate.

[–] Melody@lemmy.one 3 points 1 week ago

They certainly make it easier to do so; by making it a switch you can toggle; which allows you to generate an identity; or choose not to and roll with the identity they've already seen.

I have also seen Telegram groups dedicated to drug trade migrating to other platforms such as Signal.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 19 points 1 week ago

And here I am over here just using telegram for it's easy to build bots and talking to my family. The bots are handy for many things.

[–] jared@mander.xyz 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I haven't looked into the bots in years, what are you doing with them?

[–] m4m4m4m4@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

Not a seasoned programmer myself but I did one (with Telethon and Python) to remind everyone in my family about incoming medical appointments for my parents, due dates for public services and calculating how much everyone must pay or due dates for going for their medications

[–] mintdaniel42@futurology.today -5 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Interesting how you personally have seen groups dedicated to drug trade migrate to signal 🤔

[–] ryannathans@aussie.zone 25 points 1 week ago

Are drug users not allowed to use lemmy

[–] 9point6@lemmy.world 19 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Are you implying there's something wrong with that?

[–] mintdaniel42@futurology.today 0 points 1 week ago

No no just curious

[–] TheReturnOfPEB@reddthat.com 26 points 1 week ago

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 15 points 1 week ago

[–] GatoEscobar@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 week ago
