EDIT: Updated the funi image to actually be what I wanted it to be... Took me a while, sorry.

It’s not funny on its own. It’s funny because it’s an inside joke we all share.

The community mockery and allusion to the original is what makes the entire phenomenon.

Kind of like this pop up book on Amazon is a “isthisloss” in 3d.

https://www.amazon.com/Is-This-Art---4-Panel-Popup/dp/B07X66DCLM

It’s clever because it’s unexpected even if we all know what it is

[–] Randelung@lemmy.world 15 points 1 month ago

I clicked three times, thinking amazon was redirecting me or showing an ad or something.

Damn you.

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Ok fair point, you got me there, did not see that coming. But you are right, the two are kind of similar in the way they behave. But that link is something I can actually enjoy. That's a thing I enjoy outside of funi.

But loss? It's just a non-joke made funny by people reposting it in new ways. I get it, repetition can be funny if it's done enough times, which it has been. But it does not quite make like it as much as it should

[–] SzethFriendOfNimi@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

It was a webcomic that took itself too seriously and it was so panned that the mockery of it reverberates even today.

May not be for everybody but it was definitely something to experience at the time. Sometimes the internet has these weird flashes of communal focus (which can be both good and bad) but either way these allusions are all of us nudging each others side with our elbow and winking at the same inside joke when we see it.

Szeth what in the FUCK is that link. My dumb ass clicked on it because it looked like an Amazon link but I got a pop-up and some permission request and dude what the fuck.

~~Big doubt that's a legit link.~~ DRM is just scary lol

[–] SzethFriendOfNimi@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

It’s a link to Amazon digital product. Specifically Rick Astley “The Best Of Me” album with Never Gonna Give You Up.

The “description” of the product doesn’t matter as long as the product code is the same.

https://www.amazon.com/Whatever-You-Want-Here/dp/B07X66DCLM

A trick I saw used a couple times on Reddit a few years back

[–] Sidhean@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Oh, okay. Thank you for explaining. I was a little freaked out.

Had that worked on me instead, it would have been pretty funny.

[–] Gamer153@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

The permission request was probably just Firefox asking if Amazon Music is allowed to play DRM-controlled content (so music), so nothing inherently bad.

See, this is actually funny. This one has a plot, a good funi at the end and a reason to be shared. I like it

[–] flambonkscious@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago

This might be the best format for delivering dad jokes that I can think of (an not a trekkie)

[–] lengau@midwest.social 28 points 1 month ago (2 children)

If there were an occasional thing where I looked at it and thought "wait, is this Loss?" that would be funny. But I see them way too frequently for them to be funny. They need to be subtle and occasional, taking one off guard. Instead they're frequent and unsubtle.

[–] skulblaka@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's just The Game all over again. When you're reminded about it once a year, you facepalm and take it in stride. When somebody reminds you of it every 45 minutes, it gets real old real fast.

[–] No_Money_Just_Change@feddit.org 2 points 1 month ago

Fuck, I lost

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 month ago

Exactly what I think! They are too common to be funny.

[–] NostraDavid@programming.dev 21 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Does this work here as well?

~~:.|:;~~

edit: eyy, it does!

[–] Vespair@lemm.ee 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Loss is only funny with the context of what an enormous shithead Buckley was online for years prior; it was the juxtaposition of sanctimony in the comic against his awful miscreant behavior that makes it laughable to begin with.

If you weren't around and involved in the scene to see the kind of person Buckley was when loss was released, then you're just laughing at an echo of a joke.

[–] Zozano@lemy.lol 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I was there. /v/ was ripping on Fuckley in the weeks leading to Loss. Every comic was dissected to find the joke, and then remixed to be funny (because CAD wasn't).

And then Loss dropped, and /v/ went ape shit.

I miss old /v/ :(

[–] Vespair@lemm.ee 1 points 1 month ago

My favorite CAD related meme is still B^U personally.

Im at a loss for words

[–] grue@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I mean, the original wasn't funny either (and became notable because of how jarringly unfunny it was), so I guess that's kinda the point.

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 month ago

Fair. I'm specifically referring to the covers of it though. When overdone, like in here on 196, it gets very repetative.

[–] Alk@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

Yes. It's funny. It's the same kind of funny that "the game" (ha goteem), rickrolling, stick bugging the thing with the hand okay symbol, and even so far as "made you look" is. Just a simple easily spreadable and understandable "gotcha" to share with friends. It's constantly evolving and in a short time it will be something else with the same basic mechanism to be used as a gotcha and it will be funny too. Something doesn't need to be deep to spread a little laugh.

[–] pooberbee@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 month ago

Is this loss?

[–] TriflingToad@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

personally I think they're funny 🤷‍♀️

[–] Wirlocke@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 month ago

I don't find them funny but more amazed that we've distilled the concept into an immortal simple symbol.

Like kilroy or the cool S, loss will ironically never be lost ~~:.|:;~~

[–] Adori@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Its similar to a rickroll, its funny to poke other ppl with this meme.

[–] Alice@beehaw.org 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

There are better CAD memes, imo. I forget their url, but there's someone on Tumblr who does really good surreal edits.

I think CAD is kind of a fascinating trainwreck in how it stumbled down the gimmick-comic-to-dramedy pipeline. Loss is one symptom of that, but god, there's so much more, and "it's bad because a comedy decided to do a serious episode!!" doesn't cover it.
