In fairness, the Church of England is hardly in the top tier of most horrible variants of Christianity.

Unless the religion OP was talking about was the England football team, in which case, yes.

I thought their religion was the monarchy

[–] arudesalad@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 month ago

The monarchy is the head of the church of england

Publisher: "Wow. The descriptions of these aliens is so vivid and inhuman. How did you come up with them?!"

Lovecraft: "Aliens? I'm just describing black people and Jews."

KKK dude: "That's why you're not allowed at the meetings anymore."

I have to admit, I didn't know shit about the man when I got into his stories but finding out how incredibly racist he was sure as shit explains the ending to a few stories where the horror element is finding out you're the offspring of some people you think look a bit ugly.

iirc Lovecraft was considered wildly racist even by the standards of the time. Overly sarcastic productions has a nice video about how a lot of his stories were manifestations of his irrational fear of just about everything really.

Well to be fair in his later works, the grotesque aliens are mostly merely indifferent towards humans and not inherently evil. But yeah, most of his stuff is super rascist nevertheless.

Well, to the Nazis ugliness was literal evil. Not exaggerating unfortunately.

To a degree, ancient Greeks had this belief as well- to the point that an admitted murdress was sent free because she was hot. (I half remember this story from a decade ago. No sources)

I like lovecraft. But he's definitely a piece of shit

When did England become an island?

[–] Lemongrab@lemmy.one 28 points 1 month ago

When Ireland, Wales, and Scotland were colonized.

[–] TrenchcoatFullofBats@belfry.rip 15 points 1 month ago (1 children)

He did love England, but was born, lived and died on a different "island": Rhode Island.

[–] Impound4017@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago

Still New England though, fwiw

You should hear what he says when a black cat crosses his path

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The cat was called the N word, wasn't it?
