This is why you don't pay extra to play early, and you don't preorder Ubisoft games ever.

If you haven't figured that out yet, that's on you.

[–] 100@fedia.io 41 points 2 months ago (2 children)

*dont buy ubisoft games ever until they are on sale 75% off

[–] ZeroHora@lemmy.ml 23 points 2 months ago

Sometimes don't even bother pirating it, waste of bandwidth.

[–] MotoAsh@lemmy.world 13 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Never buy them EVER: If you don't sign in to your ubisoft account for a year, they delete your catalog. The things you paid them for. They remove.

If buying isn't owning...

[–] Zahille7@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

So it's been over a year since I've played AC: Valhalla on Uplay or Uconnect whatever it's called now.

Are you saying I won't be able to play the game I paid $70 for a couple years ago, if the feeling hits me?

ETA: just looked it up, and apparently if you bought something with said Ubi account, they won't delete your shit.

[–] MotoAsh@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (2 children)

"If you bought something".

and buying it on steam counts as buying it on ubisoft?

You don't preorder ANY game ever. And you boycott EA & Ubisoft games.

[–] accideath@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yea, but there are a few studios where I wouldn’t doubt someone’s sanity if they preordered. Naughty Dog, for example. Maybe Rockstar and Quantic Dream.

[–] DarkThoughts@fedia.io 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Quantic Dream = NetEase Rockstar = Take-Two & GTA Online Naughty Dog.... We shall see. The Part 1 port of TLoU was a hot mess and Sony seems to push for their PSN accounts for their games now, which likely will just get worse over time.

[–] accideath@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Didn’t have the acquisition of Quantic Dream on the Radar. That makes them unproven in their current form. Fair point.

For Rockstar though, if you liked GTA V, you’ll probably like GTA 6. Same goes for a potential RDR3 or any other IP. Sure, they’re owned by take two but Rockstar seems to be able to produce quality games regardless. Probably because they’re bringing in shit tons of money. I don’t see that changing much any time soon. If someone told me they preordered GTA 6 already, I wouldn’t be scared about them getting scammed. Worst case the PC release will have a few buggy weeks.

Similar for naughty dog, the PC port of tlou pt1 might have had a rocky release but it’s still a good game because it’s a remake of a masterpiece. And whatever game they will release next will almost certainly be a great game as well, be it another uncharted, tlou or one of the new IPs they’re working on. If you’re a PlayStation gamer anyways. And technically the PC port of tlou pt1 wasn’t even made by them but Iron Galaxy. And the PS Account thing, while annoying to some, has no impact at all on the contents of the game.

This isn’t to excuse shitty behavior of those devs, they all have had their issues but they never (or at least not in recent memory) released a lemon of a game, unlike Ubisoft, EA, Bethesda and the likes.

[–] xthexder@l.sw0.com 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

GTA 5 released over 10 years ago, and I don't like the direction GTA Online has gone with micro transactions and pay-to-win mechanics. I don't think Rockstar is the same as they used to be.

[–] DarkThoughts@fedia.io 2 points 2 months ago

They also very much were on a war path against modders. I honestly kinda miss the GTA 2 days.

[–] DarkThoughts@fedia.io 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I never finished GTA 5. The story and characters I just could not care about and only Online mode was letting you play your own custom character, but of course had all the flaws of GTA Online. RDR2 never was cheap enough for me to buy and as far as I heard its online mode is even worse. Pretty sure GTA 6 will have fixed characters again too, just like the previous games, so I'm honestly not sure if I even care anymore about the franchise at this point. I rather wish they'd go more sandbox than story but it seems to be more of the opposite trend.

And whatever game they will release next will almost certainly be a great game as well, be it another uncharted, tlou or one of the new IPs they’re working on.

Nah. We heard this one before, more recently with CDPR & Cyberpunk, or in the past with developers like Bioware, who had pretty legendary reputations - until they didn't anymore. Just because someone delivered a good game or even several good games in the past, does not mean their future games will meet that same level of quality. In fact, if history tells us anything, it's rather the opposite. The more games a company releases, the more likely it is to be a fluke.

[–] accideath@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Everything you describe you dislike about GTA V and RDR2 is what I love. I couldn’t care less about online. I find playing in an endless sandbox a waste of my time. I love however the characters and the story, especially in RDR2. I want Rockstar to keep making great story modes and to focus on amazing fixed characters because the opposite rarely works out. Bethesda games, for example, quickly bore me and ubisofts characters in the last decade have been a joke. I love that the industry trend goes towards big singleplayer linear adventures again because for a while there was too much focus on online and too many ginormous but boringly empty open worlds. Rockstar manage to build amazing single player experiences while still having a huge multiplayer community within the same game.

[–] DarkThoughts@fedia.io 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

You completely missed my point if you think I favor or even like GTA Online. The only good thing there is that you play your own character and can participate in whatever - it just so happens that "whatever" is nonexistent, instanced, and unrewarding. And sorry but if I want to see failures of people like some rich asshole in his midlife crisis, some violent drug addicted hobo asshole or yet another ghetto guy then I can just go outside and watch people. I just don't want to play as some unsympathetic assholes that I cannot relate to, going through their gangster stories that I don't care about. That just kills all my immersion. And I don't care for stupid linear story lines either. I have thousands of hours in Skyrim, but I never finished the main story even once, because I rather explore the open world that I further expanded with all sorts of mods, making it a completely different experience. I don't want empty sandboxes either, if that was your takeaway then I'm sorry but that's about as appealing as empty story lines to me. GTA Online has none of that. The only open world activities you can do are shit like robbing a store, which gives you some pity money. I want an open world that's actually filled with proper sandbox activities - one where I don't get ganked by some memory hack using kid that flattens everything with his tank.

[–] accideath@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Well, then GTA just isn’t for you, the same as Skyrim isn’t for me. I love the story and characters in GTA and hate the lack of deep characters and stories in the Elder Scrolls series because I don’t care much for exploring worlds in a way that doesn’t feel meaningful to me (or my character). We also seem to dislike GTA Online for different reasons. Me, because it’s devoid of characters and story, you because it lacks things to do.

[–] DarkThoughts@fedia.io 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Deep characters in GTA... Sure... lol

[–] accideath@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Well, of course they’re caricatures. That’s the whole point of GTA. But that doesn’t mean, they’re not well written. Obviously they don’t have the depth of the characters of RDR2. Which is why I prefer that game over GTA.

[–] slurp@programming.dev 9 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I agree that it's a bad idea to preorder or pay extra, especially with Ubisoft. However, following that logic they are basically preying on people new to the hobby, which sucks and deserves to be called out.

[–] shadowedcross@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Do people new to the hobby preorder games? I'm genuinely curious, since I don't know anyone new to it.

[–] slurp@programming.dev 4 points 2 months ago

Excited teenagers definitely would. Honestly, I bet anyone that sees the marketing for a game they're excited for and hasnt been burned before in that way is a prime candidate for preordering.

[–] SolarMonkey 3 points 2 months ago

I would have figured people new to the hobby would go to used game stores first, then new game sections of regular retail stores.. maybe swap those around.

I don’t even know that many long-term gamers who preorder..? They might pick it up on launch day but.. typically not preorder.

[–] SARGE@startrek.website 49 points 2 months ago (2 children)

1: holy shit that title is a.... It's something, alright.

B- if you spend extra money on top of normal costs on a game that's still not even released, you get what you fucking deserve.

[–] _sideffect@lemmy.world 27 points 2 months ago (1 children)
[–] Schal330@lemmy.world 28 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It's also the switch from : to - that gets me

[–] SARGE@startrek.website 18 points 2 months ago (2 children)

You're actually the first one to ever comment on the punctuation change. I've been waiting for this day for years.

So uh.... 👉😎👉 Zoop

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

You're my kind of people.

[–] xthexder@l.sw0.com 2 points 2 months ago

And here I thought you were just rating the title a B-

[–] FooBarrington@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago

III. if you spend money on a Ubisoft game, you get what you fucking deserve.

[–] mrfriki@lemmy.world 34 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Hate to be that guy, but well deserved for buying into this late stage capitalism shit, sorry!

[–] Paddzr@lemmy.world 15 points 2 months ago

I'm not sorry at all!

They get what they fucking deserve. Hell, I wish everyone who bought into that crap not only lost the save, but also lost access to it for minimum a week.

[–] DoucheBagMcSwag@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 2 months ago

can I offer you a ~~egg~~ trinket and some Ubisoft credits in this trying time?

[–] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 2 months ago

There's a reason I no longer play Ubisoft games, even the ones I own.

This instance isn't it. I stopped when the big sexual exploitation and harassment ring was reported and became news.

But when shit like this happens, it reminds me that I should have no regrets, even when I miss a specific moment in a game.

Sorry Ubi, you're just too toxic for me.

[–] luciole@beehaw.org 9 points 2 months ago

I’m still surprised they couldn’t (or decided not to put the necessary effort to) get the save games fixed. Telling your players to start over is brutal.

[–] Linkerbaan@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I am glad Ubisoft took a dump on these people for subsidizing their trash business practices. Maybe they will finally learn.

[–] Laser@feddit.org 2 points 2 months ago

Any day now

[–] AFC1886VCC@reddthat.com 4 points 2 months ago

It's a Ubisoft game, what can you expect but absolute shit?

[–] jaggedrobotpubes@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Well at least they paid significantly less because they knew they were buying an inferior product 🤔

[–] recursive_recursion@programming.dev 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Welcome to neocapitalism

Same shit different paint

[–] MotoAsh@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Late-stage capitalism, not "neocapitalism".

There is nothing new, unexpected, or unique about late-stage capitalism. It's just greedy fucks thinking they're the smart ones.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 2 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Remember when TF2 went free to play and everyone who paid for it just got the shittiest hat imaginable (Proof of Purchase)?

[–] nyctre@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

That was 4 years after the release date, tho. And the original price was 20$ not 110$. And it had been on sale for as low as 2.5$ before going f2p.

Reminds me of the people that paid to play early Suicide Squad and Payday 3, and in both cases the servers weren't working day 1, or in the latter's case not even day 6.

Also this is so bad even giving nothing besides the apology would be better than some trinket.

[–] GuStJaR@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (4 children)

The comments regarding this are really disappointing. People hate Ubisoft so much, for fucking customers over, that they are glad that customers are being fucked. What is wrong with you lot? People look forward to things, they side with optimism over pessimism, but fuck them right! What a bunch of angry and frustrated individuals you seem to be.

[–] SynopsisTantilize@lemm.ee 7 points 2 months ago

Breaking News!!! Man repeatedly gets diarrhea from street vendor; "Maybe this time will be different". Street vendor says, "he just keeps buying it so I just keep making it".

[–] yamanii@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

If you pay for early entry in a AAA game I feel no sympathy for that lost progress.

[–] GuStJaR@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

And that is fine. But feeling no sympathy, and being happy, are different. People being happy about others misfortune was the point of my comment.

[–] yamanii@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Early entry happens because they buy it, these buyers are part of the problem, I'm glad they got fucked over.

[–] zipzoopaboop@lemmynsfw.com 1 points 2 months ago

People like to be elitist

[–] absquatulate@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

I don't understand the vitriol either. Must be a lemmy thing ( see every thread about microsoft doing something shitty and people going "you deserve it if you use windows/don't use linux" ). Even the reddit threads related to this issue aren't this bad, they're mostly friendly and helpful towards the guys that got grifted.
