Third panel: Sex offender running for president gets shot, and survives.

[–] meant2live218@lemmy.world 41 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (6 children)

Am I crazy for not wanting anyone to get shot? I know how crazy our politics are getting, and I'm afraid of the future, but we shouldn't be wanting anyone to be shot at. Life is life, even if it's attached to the absolute worst person on Earth. Sure, lock up people who are a danger to society, but let's not celebrate gun violence.

[–] Linkerbaan@lemmy.world 23 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Trump is responsible for locking people in cages and having them die in there. And after being notified he doubled down on it. And many other acts that have led to people's deaths.

Why are murderers above being murdered?

If you want to talk about justice you need to maintain superior standards and morals.

Your argument is no better than the "Saudi Arabia doesn't allow the building of churches, so why do we allow the building of mosques?" The answer is that we're better than fucking Saudi Arabia.

Eye for an eye types of justice quickly become escalated and end up in a race to the bottom.

[–] MindTraveller@lemmy.ca 18 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Killing Nazis IS superior standards and morals. What, you gonna tell me liberating Auschwitz was wrong because the Allies used violence? You gonna say it makes them no better than the Nazis to solve problems with guns?

[–] 13esq@lemmy.world -4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I don't think an assassination attempt on Trump is equal to ending fascism in WWII, although I understand why it is tempting to draw a comparison.

If you want to try normalising and rationalising assassination attempts on world leaders, then don't act surprised when someone comes for the one you support.

No matter how much you hate Trump, this act should absolutely be condemned.

[–] MindTraveller@lemmy.ca 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I would be very happy if the democrats assassinated Trump and the Republicans killed Biden. Problem solved!

But if you mean "what if the CIA assassinated communist leaders", uhhhhhh they already do.

[–] 13esq@lemmy.world 0 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I think any endorsement of violence is absolutely terrible and wanting leaders shot is an extremly slippery slope.

That's not what I meant but it's also something that I don't endorse.

[–] MindTraveller@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Tolerating intolerance is intolerant. If you allow there to be people in your government who assassinate communist leaders, lock babies in cages, and deny lifesaving healthcare to minorities, then that stuff is gonna happen. Problems with society member got solved with wishful thinking and fairy dust. They got solved with blood. The Nazis had to be shot. The crusaders had to be stabbed. The conquistadores ought to have got arrows in their throats. It's the same in fiction, too. Luke Skywalker didn't get rid of the Death Star by sitting down and talking with Darth Vader, he used a bomb. Frodo and Aragorn didn't defeat Sauron by voting, they used their swords. The Avengers didn't debate Thanos into leaving them alone, they cut off his head with a magic axe.

What on earth do you think we're supposed to do with Nazis except kill them?

[–] 13esq@lemmy.world 0 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

I've already stated that equating killing Trump to ending fascism is a bit of a stretch. And you can tell me until you're blue in the face about how much you want Trump killed, I disagree, I think it sets a terrible precedent.

This is real life not a fantasy film.

[–] MindTraveller@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Alright, thanks for dodging the question and regurgitating thought terminating cliches.

[–] 13esq@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Yh we've both been repeating ourselves. I'm not going to change your mind, you're not going to change mine.

All I have left to say is that I hope that there isn't someone else out there who thinks it's OK to kill someone they hate and who then decides that they hate people like you.

[–] meant2live218@lemmy.world 0 points 4 months ago

Because we don't have to be all "law of the wild." Murderers deserve imprisonment, not death and endangerment.

[–] MindTraveller@lemmy.ca 17 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Wanting to shoot Nazis is patriotic

[–] 13esq@lemmy.world -2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

You need to be careful that you don't become what you hate. There are always going to be people that you disagree with on the strongest levels.

[–] MindTraveller@lemmy.ca 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, I know. Killing fascists is a full time job.

[–] 13esq@lemmy.world -2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

How many have you killed? Zero? Shut the fuck up then.

[–] Moneo@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

These people are the leftist equivalent of the special forces spaghetti. It's fucking weird how little self awareness they have.

[–] PsychedSy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 4 months ago (1 children)

If I believed everything people think Trump would do if elected, how could you ethically not want to do it yourself?

Put every marginalized person on one track and trump on the other. Do you pull the lever?

[–] meant2live218@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Then I ask you: if this is how you rationalize the violence, what prevents you from doing the same?

In a different vein of thought, does this same argument justify those on the far right who are frightened (logically or illogically) of the left threatening violence on their perceived opponents?

[–] PsychedSy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Then I ask you: if this is how you rationalize the violence, what prevents you from doing the same?

Faith in humanity? Optimism? If the gas trucks roll out I won't last long, but I'm not convinced terror is inevitable if Trump wins.

In a different vein of thought, does this same argument justify those on the far right who are frightened (logically or illogically) of the left threatening violence on their perceived opponents?

Most of the right's concerns are amorphous nuttery. The left's concerns are very concrete and frightening. They also have evidence (such as 2025) to back them up.

If they're honest about their concerns, I really don't know what to think about doing nothing about it. What are you willing to sacrifice to prevent a holocaust? At the very least we should all be quietly arming ourselves. Prefer private transactions.

My belief in robust self defense matches that of most self defense laws, and I'd wait until they're killin' to support armed resistance.

If anything, everybody should really, really, really start doing workouts at home and try to get some cardio in, too

[–] Twelve20two 6 points 4 months ago

The supreme court has kinda set things up so that he won't face prison, though.

[–] 13esq@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Right. Endorsements of violence are not Ok just because you hate an individual.

And to anyone endorsing what happened, I certainly hope that a group of violent people or a violent individual never decide that they hate you.

Presidents being shot is not unprecedented.

[–] JimSamtanko@lemm.ee 39 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (2 children)

Shot AT- if it’s even true. He’s not a victim.

[–] PunnyName@lemmy.world 28 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

Being shot at still makes one a victim of a shooting. Unless you wanna clarify that to all the kids at Sandy Hook, Uvalse, and the myriad others in this country.

Meanwhile, if the shooter had better aim, we'd have a better country.

[–] Vilian@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 months ago

nah, trump isn't what make your country that shit hole, it's your's "democracy" that create them, killing trump would only made him martyr

[–] MetaCubed@lemmy.world 23 points 4 months ago (3 children)

Being shot at does make one a shooting victim, even if the rounds missed.

[–] HappycamperNZ@lemmy.world 25 points 4 months ago (1 children)

You're missing a key point. Victim implies they suffered, where in trumps own words he should just get over it.

[–] III@lemmy.world 13 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Now is not the time to be talking about gun control. Think of the family.

[–] HappycamperNZ@lemmy.world 12 points 4 months ago

Hey, gun control is a very serious issue.

I suspect the shooter picked an incorrect weapon and this negatively affected their ability to accurately place shots center of mass.

[–] III@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I don't think Alex Jones would agree with you.

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 8 points 4 months ago

good thing we're not asking one of the worst people ever what he thinks about our opinions, isn't it?

[–] JimSamtanko@lemm.ee -3 points 4 months ago

The bullet hit a teleprompter. He wasn’t shot. He was shot at. He’s not a shooting victim. He’s a teleprompter that got shot victim.

[–] DogPeePoo@lemm.ee 5 points 4 months ago

Maybe Katie Johnson said enough is enough

[–] morphballganon@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (2 children)

Sounds like it was glass from the teleprompter that got him (shooter shot the teleprompter?)

Edit: Turnip is now claiming a bullet hit him. Not sure which story is true

[–] SlothMama@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Turnip? Intentional or hilarious unintentional typo?

[–] morphballganon@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

Intentional

[–] madcaesar@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

Now they are saying his foot was on the line!
