NIIGATA -- A symposium on making gender-neutral school uniforms inclusive of students in the LGBTQ+ community was held Nov. 18 in this central Japan prefectural capital.

The schools where I live in Japan have already implemented this to some extent. The uniforms are not labeled by gender, and students are free to choose whichever one they feel comfortable wearing.

I would not have expected that, Japan seems so slow to change.

Was there a campaign against the gendered dress code in your town?

Have there been gendered dress code campaigns for a while now as far as you know?

No obvious campaigns. This school year was the second to implement it AFAIK. perhaps not all schools. The one I am familiar with is the top public school based on academics.

Schools no longer use くん (kun) or ちゃん (chan) after students names, instead opting for さん (san) which is gender neutral. This is from elementary school.

Honestly a bit surprising for Japan but don’t see the issue. If they supply regulation clothing and let students decide it should be fine with everyone.

My daughter often likes “boys” shirts, and I don’t care so whatever makes her feel good.
