Basically when you are the first person on this server to look for a remote community or instance, then the servers need to first sync up which causes some slight delay.
Since you looked already for
[!electronics@discuss.tchncs.de](/c/electronics@discuss.tchncs.de)
it is actually very fast for me now.If something doesn't work on the first try, just wait a little bit and try again, usually that is sufficient.
Jumping in here to ask: I've done that with a couple of communities, and while I can find them and subscribe to them, in some cases I cannot see the comments at all. When I view https://lemmy.one/post/32314 for example, I can see that it has 6 comments, but when I view it from https://slrpnk.net/post/407230, I can see only my comment (before that it said 0). Is this a known issue with a known fix?
This is sort of intended, as federation only works forward from the time the two server have first communicated. Backfilling of posts and comments only happens in a very limited fashion in order to not overload the servers with requests. If you want to reply to a very specific older comment you can also use the direct link to that comment (behind the Fediverse icon) and past that into the search field here. That instructs the server to fetch that comment and then you can reply to it.
Oooh, I see. Yesterday was the first time I heard about the "fediverse", I'll have to read up on it. Searching the direct link made the comments visible. Thanks a lot!
I found it on the ALL communities list and subscribed that way (well, subscribe pending). I noticed two things that might be helpful to others: 1. when you click subscribe, the page may not refresh to show that subscribe is pending, but the click was noticed. Second, the number of subscribers in the ALL communities list may be inaccurate - perhaps because of that need to sync as mentioned above. Thanks poVoq!
The "subscribe pending" thing is a bit annoying. It still works fine, so it doesn't really effect your use of the community, but it looks odd. Often it helps to unsubscribe and resubscribe, but I noticed that when the remote instance is having load issues this often fails as well.
Its a known issue though and with the big upcoming improvements for Lemmy version 0.18 it might be fixed anyway. Lets see :)
