Well you could, but then it wouldn't be open source anymore. You could still call it 'public source' though. The threat of competing forks is one important mechanism keeping FOSS projects on the straight and narrow, imo.

Can't speak to how easy your experience will be, but Batman-adv on Openwrt was the only proper mesh approach I got working.

Carlos Gomes has a superb text guide here (terminal focused)

And OneMarcFifty has great video guides here (gui focused)

They choose somewhat different approaches so you're best off picking one and sticking with it. Oh and use BATMAN_V as your routing algo, not BATMAN_IV. Especially if you have multiple APs with different specs. Just my experience

ELI5, why is lawn care/mowing bad? I know monoculture grass is iffy, but why are wood chips better than grass?
