I agree that the whole concept can be confusing. But to use it, you don't need to understand the technical details. All communities can be viewed from any server (except if the server decides to block it).
In my opinion we should focus more on communities and less on where the community is hosted. How to do this, I don't know.

Same for me. I don't need to see nudes in my feed when I'm at work or some public place.
In the android app there is a setting called "show NSFW". I'm not sure if it really not fetching it or just not showing. Could be important if you are using it on a work phone.

Memes in general. Some are probably funny but I have not seen those yet. Most are low effort or done by a 14 year old. Maybe I'm just getting to old..
Also all the tracking and analysis tools that are integrated in most ecommerce are huge. We made a website for a company that was really fast and snappy. Then they added all their tools and it turned into a slug.
