I'd still be curious to know whether a mist is comfortable and how much water it consumes.

You know, the podcast The Climate Denier's Playbook had a great episode recently on Malthusianism in the environmental movement, and did a great job clowning on how it's totally divorced from science.

Yeah. You can find it on our website: https://fullyautomatedrpg.com/resources .

Definitely do! It's a fast read. I couldn't put it down (which is all the more remarkable because of how dark it is).

Fully Automated. It's a tabletop role playing game. I originally posted this to the Lemmy community for the game, but cross posted it because I wanted more people to talk to about the book.

I wish so much that she was still around! She was so ahead of her time. I think if she were still alive, she'd have built up a massive fandom at this point, and be such an incredible voice in our culture. And imagine what she might be writing! If her work feels current decades later, how wild would her work be in the present?? I'm confident that it world be enormously controversial in all the best ways!

[–] andrewrgross 2 points 2 months ago

I am definitely going to. I'm really curious to see where it goes!

I read Octavia Butler's Xenogenesis series years ago. I feel foolish for having discovered her and not read more of her books after finishing that! I'm going to try to avoid making that mistake again.

Also: Sean Bodley, the artist who did the cover and a lot of the interior art for the game has a handful of works from or inspired by Parable of the Sower. It's cool that while reading, these works formed a kind of natural visual foundation for me to imagine the story through art I'd seen but had no context for. Here is an example:

The only thing I don't understand about this article is what precipitated them to write it now, in September.

As they mentioned, this all came out months ago. Haaretz -- which is basically the Israeli New York Times -- reported on this. Soldiers, survivors, and investigators have all testified that the IDF instructed soldiers to let no one return to Gaza, full stop, by any means necessary, and liquidated hostages in a widespread manner.

It's terrible. I'm glad it's being talked about. But geez, why does it take months for something like this to suddenly get reported on?

[–] andrewrgross 12 points 2 months ago

This article doesn't really answer most of my questions.

What subjects does the AI cover? Do they do all their learning independently? Does AI compose the entire lesson plan? What is the software platform? Who developed it? Is this just an LLM or is there more to it? How are students assessed? How long has the school been around, and what is their reputation? What is the fundamental goal of their approach?

Overall, this sounds quite dumb. Just incredibly and transparently stupid. Like, if they insisted that all learning would be done on the blockchain. I'm very open minded, but I don't understand what the student's experience will be. Maybe they'll learn in the same way one could learn by browsing Wikipedia for 7 hours a day. But will they enjoy it? Will it help them find career fulfillment, or build confidence or learn social skills? It just sounds so much like that Willie Wonka experience scam but applied to an expensive private school instead of a pop-up attraction.

Even still. Most are like, 'Woman (allegedly American) no longer alive due to visiting West Bank, claim some'.

Most headlines don't even say who killed her.

Oh man! I remember this! I think I bought a digital download of this album. I think it was like $5 for an online download or something. I shared this with mom. Now I gotta go listen and see how it all holds up.

I don't know if you need this info, but I was pretty disturbed to see unexpected child pornography on a casual community. Thankfully it didn't take place on SLRPNK.net directly, but if anyone has any advice besides leaving the community in question, let me know. And I wanted to sound an alarm to make sure we have measures in place to guard against this.

Story ideas from u/lawrencelot (self.fullyautomatedrpg)

In a thread on reddit, someone said that they didn't see what kind of problems the setting would present, and I thought that u/lawrencelot's response was excellent enough to save and share here:

Someone stubbed their toe but has a fear of doctors. An organization develops a robot that can replace a deceased loved one. A family of badgers have built their home under railway tracks (note: this recently happened in my country). Alien contact. Someone is mean to a racist. Trees are growing their roots through nuclear waste from the past. A package was delivered to someone's neighbour and that neighbour ordered the same thing. Clouds start forming mysterious shapes. A kid's balloon flew away. All inhabitants of a city start having nightmares of an apocalypse. Someone throws soup at a famous painting to ask attention for robot rights.

It makes me really happy to see that other people get the concept, especially because I don't pretend to have enough imagination to come up with as many ideas as this, so I'm really hoping that this game inspires others to come up with ideas like this that I can play some day.

This is the background art for the cover. Before I share the full cover, I wanted to give a peak at what artist Sean Bodley has done for the background.

You can find more of his work at https://seanbodley.com/ and support him at patreon.com/seanbodley .

What is Fully Automated? (self.fullyautomatedrpg)
submitted 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) by andrewrgross to c/fullyautomatedrpg

I just realized that since this community is new, it's going to be listed on the front page of SLRPNK.net, so I should do a bit more explanation and promotion.

Fully Automated is a solarpunk tabletop RPG.

If I were to hear that, my first questions would be:

  • *"What kind of solarpunk?"
  • "What kind of stories is this for?"*
  • and "How solarpunk is this? Are we talking science fantasy with solar panels? Or something more?"

First and foremost, it's meant to be flexible. That said, the default flavor is a scientifically grounded version of high density, post-scarcity urban adventure.

The first set of playable stories are meant to be accessible, exciting adventures, especially to people new to solarpunk. It's assumed that the game may be played by game groups at the request of one player, but not everyone in the group has ever encountered this genre. These stories are primarily investigative, with a mix of diplomacy and possible violence.

Finally, how solarpunk is it? Ultimately, I don't want to confine people, and different people have different tastes. But we've made an effort to provide a starting point that doesn't feel like capitalism with a green coat of paint. The default setting exists somewhere between Libertarian Socialism and Anarchist Communism. It describes a world with a very different set of technologies, social expectations, and philosophical relationships to neighbors and nature. This game is meant to appeal to people new to solarpunk stories, but hope that folks who've read all the classics will not find it shallow.

Most importantly, though, this is not a manifesto. It's a game, and it's meant to be easy to play and genuinely fun. If you like TTRPGs, we hope you'll try it out with friends! If you want to try it, let us know and we'll help get you started.

We're getting ready to release Fully Automated, which means setting up social media accounts and our website:

fullyautomatedrpg.com

I'm not sure how much activity this community will have, but if people are interested in discussing the game, here's the place to do it!

If you're unfamiliar with the game and have found your way here, go ahead and ask questions.

I just came across João Queiroz and I'm absolutely floored by their work.

It’s easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism. Nowhere is this more visible than on the shelves of game shops, where our choices for the future are dystopia, apocalypse, and space. Fully Automated is an open source tabletop RPG project developing a free game meant to provide for solarpunk what Dungeons & Dragons provides for fantasy. It's now in beta version 0.3 and we're looking to build our community of play testers and contributors!

Fully Automated! Solarpunk tabletop RPG

Gameplay: Fully Automated can be used with whatever your favorite system is. But for the best experience, we’ve designed a simple 2d10 system for roleplay built specifically for a world of interdependence and care rather than the logic of individualist domination that underlies most RPGs. For combat, Fully Automated uses a custom card-based system that’s fast and fun, and designed with defense and preservation of life in mind.

Characters: Who do you want to be? A healer? Hacker? Negotiator? Athlete? Customize from dozens of augmentations and abilities or play as one of 12 unique pre-made characters such as a Capoeira monk and a streetwise bike courier.

World Guide: You don’t have to study the economy, governance, and legal structure of Fully Automated to play it. But if you’re curious or looking for inspiration for your own writing, it’s all there. Learn about everything from food production to housing, along with a history that tells how we got from here to there. There's no one vision of solarpunk, but whatever your taste you can find things to use in our grounded, hard-sci-fi lore set one hundred years in the future.

Plus: playable stories! Fully Automated! Campaign 1- Regulation has a full three-mission campaign with 16+ hours of content to demonstrate what thrilling adventures look like within a world of fully automated luxury communism.

If you want to play or join this project visit our Discord server and help us work toward releasing version 1 in February 2024!

I saw an effort at trying to systematize solarpunk elsewhere that felt a bit confused, but it reminded me of this. I'm not typically inclined to try to taxonamize everything, but I'll admit that the appeal definitely isn't lost on me. This felt useful.
