She was massive in the nineties. Then she tore up a picture of Pope John Paul II to protest the child abuse the church was covering up and she got absolutely slated for it. She pretty much became a recluse after that so it’s not really surprising you don’t know of here.

When the whole #metoo movement got big, people remebered her as the one who stood up against institutionalised sexual abuse before it was cool
She never got a lot of airplay after she punk-rockedly tore up a picture of the fucking pope on national television (SNL). I never really cared for her music, but RIP queen. We could use a lot more artists like you.
To add to her punk credentials, at a concert after that show she was loudly booed. Instead of running off stage, or singing the song she had planned, she did the same song she did on SNL.
Whoa Sinead is dead? Damn. A friend of mine was completely obsessed with her. Before the internet was widely available, I once printed all her songs lyrics for him from the web, and totally made him a new birthday.
totally made him a new birthday.
I'm battling to decipher this phrase
A day that you'll annually celebrate.
Maybe it's just a local phrase... When somebody makes you happy like if they gave you a bday gift.
Nothing Compares 2 U was her biggest hit. She did have a few other singles that hit the charts here and there, but nothing that really stood out. She was always kinda drawn back, like Bjork... sorta... she was also mentally ill (no idea what the diagnosis was), so that took a toll I guess as well.
She was never really big, like Spice Girls big, though the quality of her songs was levels above that. Still, she stayed kinda niche, no one actually talked about her in the past decade or so, unless it was regarding Nothing Compares 2 U, so... I guess she was just forgotten by time. Not the first or the last person that reached a peak with 1 single and then just slowly drifted away.
