FPS without a mouse? VATS is doing some heavy lifting there

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 11 points 6 months ago (3 children)

It's a single player Action RPG, not an FPS. The best way to play it is with a controller. On a PC and with tons of mods, of course.

[–] shneancy@lemmy.world 30 points 6 months ago (1 children)

you shoot mainly in first person, it is a first person shooter "FPS". A game doesn't need to be exclusively an FPS to be an FPS

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 5 points 6 months ago (1 children)

First person shooter is a genre, not the mere presence of first person shooting. First person shooters like for example Call of Duty have some RPG aspects, but they're not RPGs either.

At most, I'll agree with "RPG with FPS elements", though even THAT is a bit misleading since the combat system doesn't function in ways very similar to that of an FPS once you scratch the surface.

[–] shneancy@lemmy.world 17 points 6 months ago (1 children)

so you're gatekeeping the descriptive "genre" of First Person Shooter, and in whatever definition you have you exclude all the games that don't mainly focus on first person shooting, despite the fact that first person shooting is one of the most common ways to progress in the game?

That's just silly

also user defined tags on steam, since the definitions of what fits or doesn't fit a certain genre depends entirely on the audience's opinion - go ahead disagree with the leading opinion

so you're gatekeeping the descriptive "genre" of First Person Shooter

Other way around: I'm not letting you smear my beloved RPG by incorrectly labeling it an FPS lol

and in whatever definition you have you exclude all the games that don't mainly focus on first person shooting,

You know what a genre is, right? Would you call the Horizon and Assassins Creed games platformers? They involve platforms, after all 🙄

despite the fact that first person shooting is one of the most common ways to progress in the game?

It isn't, though. One of the things that makes it a better game (in my subjective opinion) than for example the Diablo games is that there's tons of other ways to progress than just shooting everything.

the definitions of what fits or doesn't fit a certain genre depends entirely on the audience's opinion

Nope. People are often objectively wrong about things.

go ahead disagree with the leading opinion

Thanks for the permission to keep not having my opinions determined by the frequently ignorant masses, I guess. Am I also allowed to keep refraining from saying "literally" when what I actually mean is "figuratively"?

[–] shneancy@lemmy.world 16 points 6 months ago (1 children)

"most common way" man, did you even read the words I wrote?

and ah yes "objectively wrong" about video game genres, suuuuure

anyway, this conversation has been incredibly stupid, and your oddly strong opinion about what is and isn't an FPS is not even based on any facts. Fallout:NV does indeed allow you to shoot at things from the first person perspective, and however small part of the game it might be for you, the fact you can do that, does make it, in part, a first person shooter - whether you like it or not. And if somebody doesn't like first person shooters, there's a high likelihood they won't enjoy modern Fallout games either. this said I'm out, I've got better things to do than arguing about "objectivity" in definitions of video game genres lmao

I like how you only got one downvote

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 17 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I mean, it's an FPS as well as an RPG. Unless you're going for a melee build, a Mouse is still going to be more comfortable for Guns or Energy Weapons builds.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago (1 children)
[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 18 points 6 months ago (2 children)

...how? It's a game, that you play, with a first person perspective, and shoot guns. Unless you only use VATS, a mouse is going to be more comfortable for most people, myself definitely included.

[–] clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works 6 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I don't use V.A.T.S. at all; never have. Getting a decent gun early game and going for headshots has served me well.

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 3 points 6 months ago

Same, I like to ignore VATS. Gunplay is much nicer with kNVSE and other fun mods anyways.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Not everyone considers "sitting upright or hunched over at a desk as if working" the most comfortable position to game in and it's not like you need the extra precision of the mouse to enjoy a story-driven RPG like you do when playing a competitive FPS that's only about precision and reaction time.

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 11 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Not everyone considers controllers to be more comfortable for shooters than Mouse and Keyboard. New Vegas is a fantastic RPG, but the combat is that of an FPS. Maybe if I was doing a bunch of non-combat quests I would agree, but as someone who has played thousands of hours both ways, I prefer mouse and keyboard pretty greatly.

You can have your own preference, I think it's a bit strange to call mine "wrong."

[–] Poem_for_your_sprog@lemmy.world 10 points 6 months ago

They probably play XCOM with a controller too.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 34 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

Ok, but why are they in the sewers of FO4 and not in an abandoned casino or something?

[–] FilthyShrooms@lemmy.world 17 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Yea he should be in the middle of the desert. Also that burger looks too fresh and clean

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 13 points 6 months ago

I bet it's hardly irradiated at all! 😤

[–] Tylerdurdon@lemmy.world 26 points 6 months ago (3 children)

Aww yea! I never played that one and the show has inspired me to get back into the universe, so I picked up FNV ultimate.

It was a bit dated at first, so I researched modding and got those graphics in a much better place, along with a ton of bug fixes.

Now to try my hand at Caravan...

[–] herrcaptain@lemmy.ca 24 points 6 months ago (1 children)

You absolutely made the right call. Fallout is apparently at its best when Bethesda isn't fully calling the shots. Apart from the original isometric games, that's (in my opinion) the gem of the series.

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 10 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

Nobody hates Fallout more than Fallout fans, haha.

The biggest thing for me is that New Vegas is both a rushed mess and the highest peak the series had reached, meaning a better Fallout game is both possible and yet will probably never happen.

Here's to hoping Fallout: London is good!

[–] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 2 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Unfortunately fallout London is dead in the water with the updates today

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 4 points 6 months ago

Should just be temporary, not a huge deal hopefully. It's so close to being here that I am fine waiting that bit longer.

[–] PugJesus@lemmy.world 19 points 6 months ago (3 children)

As much as I adore and have endlessly played FNV, I never got the hang of Caravan.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 8 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

All you need to do is get 2 of the 3 piles to be a higher number than the other guy's and you win. It's actually not that fun once you actually know the rules and it becomes brain-dead easy against the NPCs. Gwent is a little better. But Tetra Master is the GOAT.

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 4 points 6 months ago

It's basically blackjack, but 21-26, and must be higher than your opponent's "caravan." Kings double values, jacks remove cards, and queens and jokers are less relevant.

Plus, you have to only increase or decrease unless special conditions are met, like having the same suit or a queen.

It's actually really easy to get the hang of and make a ton of caps before you hit New Vegas, even without a Luck build.

[–] chocosoldier@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 6 months ago

it clicked pretty quickly when i finally went and looked it up online, and played a bit with a standalone browser version i found. the in game explanation just isn't very good.

[–] Nom@lemm.ee 3 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I love fallout but it's a Bethesda game so make sure to use this. You just can't play Bethesda games without at least bugfixes.

[–] Tylerdurdon@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I appreciate it man. Yes, I followed a video that primarily patched for capacity and bug fixes. It took a good couple hours of work just for that (Vortex is badass by the way). That was the foundation that would allow for the huge amount of graphics upgrades. I've played a good dozen hours now without a single crash/bug.

[–] Nom@lemm.ee 2 points 6 months ago

I’ve played a good dozen hours now without a single crash/bug

This is more satisfying than winning any boss battles in game. Well worth the effort though, have a good one.

Tale of Two Wastelands gang rise up

[–] iamascaryvampire@lemmy.world 11 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Yooooooooo where so u live? That cellar? Looks awesome

[–] PhireFloofski@lemmy.world 28 points 6 months ago (3 children)

it's a typical cellar in a Polish apartment block

[–] RealJoL@feddit.de 19 points 6 months ago

This also what most cellars look like in Europe if your building hasn't been constructed in the last 70 years.

[–] TimeNaan@lemmy.world 17 points 6 months ago

Yup, they all look the same. All commie blocks in the country were mass produced in the same exact way.

Also - Oranżada Helena gives it away

[–] beanson@lemmy.ml 5 points 6 months ago

Yeah looks like most shared basements in my city. Every apartment has a private lock up like you can see on the right hand side in the image with the number 6 on it.

[–] PugJesus@lemmy.world 5 points 6 months ago

lmao, I wish I lived there. Just a fine picture I found from someone else online.

[–] MystikIncarnate@lemmy.ca 10 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I should play fallout.

I own it. Haven't played it.

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 9 points 6 months ago

Use Viva New Vegas for a perfectly modded game!

[–] Michal@programming.dev 6 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Haha, i thought it was Poland until I noticed Oranżada 😂

[–] Coldus12@reddthat.com 1 points 6 months ago

Wait is it not?

[–] LazerFX@sh.itjust.works 6 points 6 months ago

Holy shit... An old Medion laptop in the wild! I got one of those at Aldi in the UK about... I dunno, 20 years ago? A long time ago. 4 years in, the cooler packed in and it started overheating. They RMA'd it and fitted a whole new cooler and motherboard.

The shape looks the same to me, too... Nice little laptop.

[–] Ultragigagigantic@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

Now playing Camera thief by Atmosphere

[–] KingThrillgore@lemmy.ml 2 points 6 months ago

My one regret is getting stuck in one of those DLC sidequests. Ugh. I really just need the easy levels.

[–] TheFriar@lemm.ee 2 points 6 months ago

But why is that laptop from 2001

[–] PrettyFlyForAFatGuy@feddit.uk 1 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Currently playing through the new california mod for the first time (since the fallout london release has been pushed)
