MODERATORS

  • Donald Trump's views on abortion are muddled at best and threatening at worst.
  • GOP lawmakers are targeting access to IVF, IUDs, birth control pills, and emergency contraception.
  • So some women are stockpiling abortion pills and contraception, activists say.

Donald Trump's views on a national abortion ban have not exactly been transparent.

In March, the repeat presidential candidate seemed to support the idea: "The number of weeks now, people are agreeing on 15, and I'm thinking in terms of that, and it'll come out to something that's very reasonable," he said during an interview."

Previously, he floated a 16-week ban because he liked the roundness of the number.

But then, last week, after Arizona's Supreme Court revived a near-total abortion ban dating back to 1864, Trump said the court had gone too far and that he wouldn't sign a national abortion ban if it came across his desk. "It's all about state's rights, and it will be straightened out," he said after the ruling.

The flip-flopping probably has something to do with the line Trump is trying to walk between many within his base who support a national ban on abortion and the women voters he'll need to show up for him on election day if he wants to defeat President Joe Biden in November.

It means OBGYN care in general is taking a giant nose dive. People don’t understand the terminology. “Abortion” is a medical procedure. Terminate a pregnancy: abortion. Expedite a miscarriage so mom doesn’t bleed to death: abortion. Remove a dead baby from the womb so a carcass doesn’t rot inside mom: abortion in the third trimester.

It’s all the same in a medical chart because medicine doesn’t make religious-political distinctions in their procedures, they’re just procedures.

Medical care should be private for no other reason than to keep this crap out of health care. Isn’t privacy what HIPAA was supposed to be about?

How do you even reconcile some of these state abortion laws with HIPAA, which is federal? Isn’t federal supposed to override state?

It can be a major surgery that requires multiple people, especially later in the pregnancy. It’s not something that can fly under the radar. If the state makes the procedure illegal, the provider could lose their license to practice if they are found to have performed it. It’s one of the reasons OB/GYNs and fertility doctors are fleeing the states where abortion and IVF are no longer legal. They state that it’s a conflict of their Hippocratic Oath and/or unethical to limit necessary care that they are capable of providing.

Exactly.

This is terrifying for married women. Conceiving a child in marriage is very dangerous in these states.

This fringe group that wants to target “sin” is really just targeting any woman with a functional uterus who is still firing eggs from her ovaries.

Does this have a long shelf life?

Unless it needs to be refrigerated, which it doesn’t afaik, probably yes.

The US navy did a study on “expired” non-refrigerated medications and found most of them don’t lose significant potency for a really long time. And I can guarantee even the chance of it working is worth it when nothing else is available. Tho if you have other options you’d be better served using those, as you want the most reliable dose.

Where are these stockpiling claims originating? I know of literally no one who is stockpiling abortion pills. I haven’t seen, or encountered, any females that are even discussing the proposed bans.

[–] greenfish@lemmy.world 11 points 6 months ago (1 children)

The fact that you call them 'females' might suggest they wouldn't discuss it around you. I can assure you the women in my circles are worried sick
