I realise I really miss that feature from 10 years ago. Any (foss) app doing that?

HoleyLight sounds like what you're searching for. I've never personally tried it though.

I just tried on android 14. Very complicated to set up ( I barely understood half the questions, also why does it want to connect to a remote device is beyond me). And I didn't get it working after playing with all the parameters. I am sure chainfire knows what he's doing, so maybe I will dig in xda for support. Also it says up to 5.5% battery per hour 😵

Edit: after playing with it today, I got how it interacts with aod in general and managed to get it work. I'll see what is the actual impact on battery over several days and see if it's worth the trade off

I used to use this one...but for some reason I just never found any of the settings made it as noticeable and useful as an actual notification LED so I just switched to using an always on display.

I too miss notification LEDs...yet another thing sacrificed to the alter of bezelless design.

Not really. If you can have cutouts for speakers and cameras then you could also have cutouts for LEDs, or even combine it with the camera or speaker cutout.

I wanted to use this but it made my DT2W and lift to wake completely useless. It's a pity because these are the only two issues I had with it.

I had a look and found this app, but it's not FOSS (as far as I know) and it says it won't work on my phone because of the Android version. Sharing just in case, but I realise it's probably not going to work for you either:

EDIT - another one, but this time it would work on my phone, so hopefully yours too. Still not FOSS though, sorry:

@sanguinepar @BeatTakeshi have you tried looking it up online? maybe it has an official website. Lawnchair had the same issue but had an official apk on their website.

I used aodNotify by Jawomo quite a time, it is great. (Make sure to use the correct one for your device).

I'm not using it anymore now, because I got a smart watch, which I find more useful for notifications now.
