The mastodon and lemmy content I’m seeing feels like 90% of it comes from people who are:

  • ~30 years old or older

  • tech enthusiasts/workers

  • linux users

There’s nothing wrong with that particular demographic or anything, but it doesn’t feel like a win to me if the entire fediverse is just one big monoculture.

I wonder what it is that is keeping more diverse users away? Is picking a server/federation too complicated? Or is it that they don’t see any content that they like?

Thoughts?

Who else would know about a new type of social media tech that hasn't existed before?

Teenagers somehow.

"Only" the first two apply to me as I blasphemously love Windows, but I somewhat agree with your observation.

All true for me... except I haven't booted into my Linux install in literal months.

Reddit started the same way and guess what happens once the mass started joining it

Yes. Like you said, it's not a bad thing, but I do miss the energy younger people bring.

I'm neither cis male nor that old but I fit the other two demographics lmao

Might be that tech inrerested ppl are more inclined to switch to less used alternatives when they allow for a more free and open platform. Also the barrier of entry for those might be quite a bit lower than the average Redditor

I'm 65, so practically everybody online seems young to me

It’s not TikTok. That is for sure (the new hotness for teens). And so in the world of Reddit and Facebook the early adopters are … the people you describe. Mastodon seems a bit more diverse - since it’s branches from Twitter but Lemmy and Kbin is Reddit refugees and those are .. 30+ nerds.

Lemmy keeps me from doom scrolling like what I did when I still had my Facebook and Reddit accounts, and fck me I'm 25. Some content from mainstream social medias are too noisy, too personal, too annoying, and too short for my taste, and accidentally watched and heard them from public places.

And, I don't consider myself a tech savvy.

  • ~~30 years old or older - nope~~
  • tech enthusiasts/workers - ummm yea, both
  • linux users - yeah, on linux now
