Atheism is simply a lack of belief in deities, nothing more, nothing less. I personally think that to say someone is an atheist is like saying that someone is a not-a-football player.

What people mean by “Reddit atheism” or “New Atheism” or whatever other similar term is a particular brand of liberal, individualist atheists who make their bitterness toward religions their entire personality.

They treat religion as the root of all evil— instead of seeing class as the main perpetrator of conflict and driving force in history, they see religion as that, even though religion is but one aspect (one that is ultimately inferior to class and surprisingly to a few others) of human societies and civilizations.

The reason they get shit on so much is that they tend to be smug, sanctimonious, wannabe intellectual debatebros, and I’ve noticed that much of what characterizes the “Reddit atheist” also characterizes internet liberals.

Yeah. Problem is, when things happen like it happened all the time on r/genzedong, when a horde of religious pseudomarxists gang up in every relevant thread to try to push their clerical socialism on everyone. Their main method is to accuse every atheist of being liberal atheist. Although it is not surprising that guys who can't even comprehend Manifesto, not to mention books like Anti Duhring or Materialism and Empirocriticism would also not recognize class characteristics in various faces of atheism.

Jacobin (yuck), but this article is a good one on the new atheists and how they use selective anti-religionism to support US empire.

What's wrong with Jacobin?

This is all rather concerning, though I'm not fully convinced. Granted, the archive link and struggle sessions link are quite long, so it'll take some time for me to read through it all.

I have to question how supporting an independent Hong Kong is pro-imperialism though. Isn't China assuming control a form of imperialism, or do I not fully understand what imperialism actually is?

Also, I don't really have an opinion on the Uyghur situation, as I'm not well informed on the matter. From what I've read of that Jacobin article, comparing what China is doing to America's "War on Terror" seems somewhat applicable, I guess? Not directly, since it's not a literal war, but I can't imagine there being much support from Leftists for America doing something similar; that is, rounding up Muslims in America and re-educating them with "Western "culture"" (whatever that means).

I hope this doesn't come across badly, I unfortunately did not have (and am still having issues with finding) good Leftist sources to read a non American-dogmatic version of events for what occurred in Hong Kong and with the Uyghurs. So any information you have on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

A personal philosophy whose main tenet is "be annoying".

Annoy people who follow religions, regardless if they're minding their own business or if they're actually doing harm.

Annoy other atheists for random bullshit.

Basically, annoying people is its own reward. The point is to convince yourself you're superior to other peeps.

Though the RAYTHEIST community is no longer what it used to be. Most of the big names that kept it alive were absorbed into larger movements, mostly political ones. We now know them as "debate-bros". There's leftist debate-bros, rightist debate-bros, centrist debate-bros...

[–] salarua@sopuli.xyz 5 points 2 years ago (2 children)

i've been called a debate bro before for asking for sources to back up claims of fact. is that a common debate bro tactic?

[–] VinesNFluff@beehaw.org 8 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Simply asking for sources doth not a debatebro make.

There's a certain smarmy attitude paired with self-importance that makes a debatebro.

To be like, proper debatebro you have to be stalking people and demanding they debate you based on a statement they made days ago. You have to be sneering and asking for a source when they say that water is wet, even though water being wet is such a common piece of knowledge that the onus of proof should be on the one disagreeing. Shid like that.

Annoying atheism I think.

Anyways, atheism is based as long as people aren't annoying with it.

[–] Tatar_Nobility@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 years ago

Reddit Atheism, in a nutshell, is a perverted form of atheism that replaces religion with science as a dogma.

ah, i see. specifically, i see that the only religion they use to back up their claims that religion is bad is Christianity. no mention of Buddhism, Hinduism, etc. anywhere. so uh let's see here...that's a Texas sharpshooter fallacy (some people who are bad are Christians, therefore Christianity is bad) combined with an induction fallacy (Christianity is bad, therefore all religions are bad)? so much for the logic they claim to live by

[–] ksynwa@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 2 years ago

That is simply because Christianity is more popular where they live. Nothing illogical about not dunking on religions obscure to them.
