As an American-Brit who has been living in Sweden for a couple of years, I've always found it interesting that pretty much everyone I know here can be found at their home address simply by googling their name and clicking on hitta.se. When I show this to my British or American friends, they're always shocked, and I find myself explaining that "Swedes have a very different, more trusting, relationship with their government than Brits or Americans."

Personally, I've never had a problem arise from this, and neither has anyone I know here, but I've been here less than for two years. I love it here and I can see myself living here for the rest of my life (that is, if you'll have me! Soon time to renew my visa!)

But I find myself wondering: Has anyone here, or anyone you know, ever had a problem arise from their address being listed publicly? Strange people turning up at your door, weird post or packages, or something worse?

My coworker had his and his partner's information kept private because his partner worked for Försäkringskassan and didn't want to run the risk of being harassed at home. Not a big issue to get that taken care of to stay safe.

Wait untill you find out that your personal numer/social security number, your salary, your taxes and your crime record is publicly available..! Your address is the least of your "problems" :p

Technically, your salary is not available, only taxes. But you can sort of deduce the salary from the tax.

How is a personnummer interesing though? It is just an id. It’s nothing like a ssn in the us that is used as authentication.

And your criminal record? What am I gonna do with that?

I really don’t get what you think is so scary.

Oh that's nothing, wait till you hear that someone can pay like 50-100 SEK to Ratsit.se and get access to your social security number as well. :D

Jokes aside, never had any problems with this.

I removed myself from all those type of sites (the ones I could at least) just because I think it's an invasion of privacy to be able to find my adress and number online.

If I want someone to have my number I'll give it to them.

Not personally but I have friends who've been threatened by criminals who found them on Hitta.se

Personally no, but I’ve heard several people who have gotten hurt, by stalkers most of the time.

I find it to be a shitty policy, theres no reason for it to exist.

I'm gonna blow your mind now. Even your family is public information in Sweden.

I can call to the tax office without reason and ask for your "family picture" and they will tell me who your parents are, any siblings, if you are married or have a spouse, what your kids are named, how old they are etc

They will even hand me their address and personal number if asked.

Your income is also public information anyone can request at any point.

Also any criminal history can be requested by anyone in the country.

Also, idk if you know, but it's illegal to not give the government your current address in Sweden. If you forget to report your new address immediately when moving you can be prosecuted for "Folkbokförings brott". Same goes if you have a faulty address registered for yourself

Not personally, but I know of people working in health care and social services/child protection that have been threatened and been afraid of angry patients/family members coming to their house/waiting for them at the parking lot. I also have some vague memory of a social worker that was harrassed/got their house vandalised.

Well yes. My unhinged father that I haven't said a word to in years. Had my cousins father call my brother and try to reconnect. And knew exactly where he lived. And they haven't said a word in years. It was just bit creepy to say the least.

After that I just wrote a few emails and it all went away. My phone number and such.

Someone keeps leaving small bits of trash outside my door. I managed to hide my personal information from most sites after my ex's numerous death threats but not all. Didn't matter. Skatteverket told him. Thanks a lot government. As long as my ex stays in Africa where he is I feel relatively safe. The trash might be accidents. I live in a apartment.

You can remove yourself from hitta.se, a better site for example is ratsit.se since they use official population registration from the tax office.

One of my friends is a local politician, he found an angry woman in his garden one day. She was not happy with the decisions made..

She also said she would burn down his house but police decided she was too crazy to be taken seriously.

This doesn’t really have much to do with a more trusting relationship with the government. Your address becomes public record because basically every decision made by the authorities is up to public scrutiny because of the “principle of publicity” in our so called constitution

I had a problem lasting for years, my phone number was listed both under my name and a random girl hours away. I think the problem was because we had the same name, both first and last. I was a minor, she was an adult, and adult men who was out to sleep with her probably looked her up online, and ofc contacted me instead thinking i was her. I had horny adult men contacting me for years, REFUSING to believe i was a CHILD with no connection to this stranger whatsoever. Some of them wanted me to tell them where i live, or call them to confirm i was the wrong person.

When it first happened i was at a sleepover with some friends and it freaked us out. For some context to that freakout, we thought the text was actually meant for me. Im a trans man, who had socially transitioned already, used a new name and all, and of course i had had to endure some bullying due to this. We thought it was someone who was out to harm me or harass me for being trans, especially since they used my old name, and i was a very very shy and introverted kid so nobody who wasn't my close friend would have any reason to ever talk to me, neither in school or real life. So i was terrified thinking someone was stalking me and out to hurt me.

I contacted hitta.se about the phone number mix up, and i got no response and the number was still listed under both my name and this random girl years later so i just gave up.

Hitta.se is good in many ways, but definitely very very bad when it comes to children getting involved and getting an adults sexual harassments accidentally. Especially when the men are complete scum and don't immediately back off when they are informed they are speaking to a child due to a mix up

This is a huge problem for rich and/or famous people. Home invasions and robberies outside of apartments have become so common that in the more posh parts of Stockholm people have stopped displaying expensive watches. Also many frauds where especially elders are targeted wouldn't be possible without sites like Hitta.

The offentlighetsprincip where one also can check up on taxed income (combined with tabloids writing articles like "Best payed in your city") is a gold mine for criminals.

I just want to highlight that it is possibly to request (note: request) that these sites take you off their indexing. I’ve done it and had success with Hitta and Eniro. MrKoll and Ratsit has not removed my info though and I can’t bother enough.

My wife had a stalker that managed to find out her adress by just knowing her first name, city she lived in and by guessing her age. That is all you need. For pages like ratsit.se with an account (open for anyone) you can even get another persons social security number, as well taxed income, what car you drive, dogs registered on the adress etc.

One thing criminals can do is to take your look up your car plates outside the grocery store, get your homeadress and rob the place while you are away. Or steal the car from your house now that they where you live.

I for one would like more privacy.

A couple of years ago some swedish gangsters started calling and threatening my ex girlfriend through Hitta.se (I had removed myself from those sites previously) because I accidentally liked a comment they didn’t agree with on instagram 😳

A while back someone knew my IRL name and knew I was from Sweden, and from that managed to find out everything about me. Once they had my last name and address they could find me in leaked databases where they found all my emails, passwords, everything. I got mass-hacked across all my accounts and contacted on discord. I knew who the guy was, I had apparently "pissed him off" in a game and he was now seeking revenge. I held him busy talking to him while I swapped as many passwords as possible, feeding his ego etc. He was talking about how he was gonna find my family and do a bunch of crazy shit. Once I had my most important accounts passwords changed I started taking screenshots and threatened with police (I knew he was from UK so I could report him easily) and quickly he started deleting all his messages and gave me my accounts back.

After this incident I've had major trust issues, I use a new password for every account and I am always careful to make accounts with names that could direct towards me. I removed myself from hitta.se but due to our insane govt my info can be found elsewhere

TLDR; whatever people in this thread tell you, for the love of god keep this system out of US and other countries. It does nothing to help and does only harm and incentivise stalker behaviours

i haven’t heard anyone who was affected negatively by it, if anything it helps because you can return lost items to people. usually nobody will search for you unless you’re like famous or something i guess. if you’re scared you can delete yourself from those pages
