As an American-Brit who has been living in Sweden for a couple of years, I've always found it interesting that pretty much everyone I know here can be found at their home address simply by googling their name and clicking on hitta.se. When I show this to my British or American friends, they're always shocked, and I find myself explaining that "Swedes have a very different, more trusting, relationship with their government than Brits or Americans."
Personally, I've never had a problem arise from this, and neither has anyone I know here, but I've been here less than for two years. I love it here and I can see myself living here for the rest of my life (that is, if you'll have me! Soon time to renew my visa!)
But I find myself wondering: Has anyone here, or anyone you know, ever had a problem arise from their address being listed publicly? Strange people turning up at your door, weird post or packages, or something worse?

A while back someone knew my IRL name and knew I was from Sweden, and from that managed to find out everything about me. Once they had my last name and address they could find me in leaked databases where they found all my emails, passwords, everything. I got mass-hacked across all my accounts and contacted on discord. I knew who the guy was, I had apparently "pissed him off" in a game and he was now seeking revenge. I held him busy talking to him while I swapped as many passwords as possible, feeding his ego etc. He was talking about how he was gonna find my family and do a bunch of crazy shit. Once I had my most important accounts passwords changed I started taking screenshots and threatened with police (I knew he was from UK so I could report him easily) and quickly he started deleting all his messages and gave me my accounts back.
After this incident I've had major trust issues, I use a new password for every account and I am always careful to make accounts with names that could direct towards me. I removed myself from hitta.se but due to our insane govt my info can be found elsewhere
TLDR; whatever people in this thread tell you, for the love of god keep this system out of US and other countries. It does nothing to help and does only harm and incentivise stalker behaviours

Most people give away a lot more info on facebook/instagram tha you will find on hitta. If someone wants to hack you its pretty easy

That's not an excuse and it's an assumption that people have Facebook or Instagram. What's the point with this whataboutism? There are serious privacy concerns with hitta with laws designed prior to the internet age

But it isnt actually a problem. And it does help when you need to locate and find someone

I gave a very good reason why it's a problem, and multitudes of other people have posted about their issues of stalking and threats. and yes it does help when you need to locate someone, which is the whole ISSUE. You're not supposed to be able to locate people without their consent
