Forcing people to use their real names on screen is just another way to track people and profit off of it.
Using a "screen name" like we do on kbin/lemmy and the like prevents stalkers from harassing you in the real world.
Moderating tools are how you stop abuse, not forcing everyone to submit their government ID to use a platform.
Freedom and privacy are individual rights, being forced to be tracked and harassed is a crime against humanity.

I can confirm what the study says. I have different usernames for each community I'm involved in and take care of the reputation of each of them separately.
With an ephemeral name, nothing matters and we can shitpost without restraints.
With my real name, I wouldn't participate at all in many communities.
Can confirm - my username draws lines in the sand.
Damn why potatoes
Well that's just fucked. I use my real name and let me tell you, rarrrrrggggghhhh! ;)
I think of my username as being like a lock on the door. It's not going to stop someone who is dedicated to fucking with me, but it keeps the opportunistic fuckery at bay.
"casual privacy" I call it
