"The community would find it shocking..."

... Really? This is genuinely shocking? That a kid who probably hasn't seen the genuine impact of a gun and it's implications to human life but rather a culture that makes guns seem cool, especially considering his father owns 25 guns... you're shocked that this child thought it would be cool to show other kids the gun? In a society of clout?

I'm disappointed that the parents were disappointed. They should be disappointed in themselves as this was their responsibility. Grrrrr.

I'm glad the kid is doing well at their new school though. :)

Should be banned for life from owning guns along with his dad.

I don't think a 14yo should have any lifetime punishment for anything they do. I do think the parents were irresponsible. How can a 14yo have access to a safe with guns in it?

yea brain is not formed yet. thats why they look like adults but make such incredibly stupid mistakes. Also why we have a youth justice act. We are not savages like that cheetos colored place to the south.

I feel this is often a cop out though. As a teen I knew right from wrong. And made choices , where some friends made bad choices and suffered tue consequences. But maybe there are kids that have terrible role models

The point isn't that there should be no punishment, just that the punishment should not be so permanent.

We can condemn stupid things that children do while still giving them a chance to smarten up.
