President Biden is set to unveil a nearly $5 billion investment into dozens of infrastructure projects throughout the country on Thursday during a visit to Superior, Wisconsin.

The investment targets 37 major infrastructure projects throughout the country across at least 12 states, with much of the funding going toward repairing and building new bridges. Among the investments is $600 million to replace the 1-5 bridge that connects Washington and Oregon, $372 million for the Sagamore Bridge in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and $1.06 billion to replace the Blatnik Bridge that runs between Wisconsin and Minnesota, which is near where Mr. Biden is set to appear for the announcement on Thursday. White House principal deputy press secretary Olivia Dalton called this a "full-circle moment" for the president.

New bridges are woke. Stop new bridges from grooming our children!

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 17 points 9 months ago (1 children)

That's it, I'm boycotting bridges.

[–] JaymesRS@literature.cafe 11 points 9 months ago

If Biden is so woke, why is his nickname Sleepy Joe‽‽ Hard to be woke while sleeping!!!!1!!eleven!!!

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 1 points 9 months ago

Im just gonna pull out an old conversation from highschool that kinda fits this.

"The hell is that?" -Me

"A suspension bridge?" -Friend

"No, thats a penis nbridge." -Me

"Their building penis bridges to turn the freaking kids gay!" -Other friend across the room

"See, I aint the only one."

For quick context he was playing cities skylines on his laptop and was messing with the terrain tool. The reason he was doing that is cause the power was knocked out by lighting, so we were all waiting for pickup.

Typical libs, spending tax money on woke infrastructure and satanic public improvements. Trump was going to have an even better infrastructure unveiling unlike anything anyone had ever seen, but the libs had to ruin it with all their voting and subsequent transition of power.

[–] TheJims@lemmy.world 8 points 9 months ago

It was just two weeks away, the biggest and best infrastructure project in the history of ever, believe me.

[–] Telorand@reddthat.com 2 points 9 months ago

I'm with you. I would much rather have satanic infrastructure and woke public improvements. I also propose we start calling polling places "Gay Polling Locations," too.

[–] AbidanYre@lemmy.world 12 points 9 months ago

Is it infrastructure week already?

[–] Hairyblue@kbin.social 10 points 9 months ago

Good job Joe. Now do more good things.

I am all for Infrastructure.

Though $600 million for that I-5 bridge over the Columbia River seems very low. The Narrows Bridge across the Puget Sound cost like $800 million in 2007 and I feel like that was a smaller project. I am sure there's some sort of cost matching with WA and OR funding involved but that in particular caught my eye having personal context to that bridge.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Washington — President Biden is set to unveil a nearly $5 billion investment into dozens of infrastructure projects throughout the country on Thursday during a visit to Superior, Wisconsin.

The investment targets 37 major infrastructure projects throughout the country across at least 12 states, with much of the funding going toward repairing and building new bridges.

White House principal deputy press secretary Olivia Dalton called this a "full-circle moment" for the president.

"He first visited the Blatnik Bridge about two years ago after the State of the Union in 2022 to talk about the important investments we're making through the bipartisan infrastructure law in America," Dalton said aboard Air Force One.

During the visit, the president is set to meet with small business owners who the White House says are expected to benefit from the new Blatnik Bridge.

"Joe Biden bet on the American worker while Donald Trump blamed the American worker," UAW President Shawn Fain said in his announcement during the UAW's political convention in Washington, D.C. "We need to know who's gonna sit in the most powerful seat in the world and help us win as a united working class.

I thought they did this 3 years ago?

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 0 points 9 months ago

Which part? I was thinking exactly the same for the Sagamore Bridge and had to look it up. Apparently the rotary was 2004 and the facelift was like 2013. It’s just that replacing the bridge has been talked about forever. Usually someone tries to say it’s an intentional bottleneck to reduce traffic on the Cape. What morons.

It takes courage to visit Superior, WI in January.

[–] dumples@kbin.social 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

It's not that cold today. Not that dangerous except normal Wisconsin danger

[–] Jode@midwest.social 0 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Normal Wisconsin danger... 👀

[–] dumples@kbin.social 2 points 9 months ago

Always hazardous to go there

[–] TubeTalkerX@kbin.social 1 points 9 months ago

Don't forget to visit the Bong Bridge!

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 11 points 9 months ago (2 children)

This is not so much 'more cars' as it is 'less cars plunging into rivers during a bridge collapse.'

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

I can only speak for my local Bridge ….. they want to replace the old Sagamore bridge to get the same number of lanes. Replace the WPA project from 1935 with a modern one. Replace two extra narrow lanes with no breakdown with lanes that meet code. Replace opposing traffic right next to each other with a median. Replace a bicycle path on sidewalk with a separate bike path. Replace a low speed limit bridge with the same speed limit as the roads it joins.

Most importantly replace the common summertime traffic report of “40+ mile backup to the Sagamore Bridge” with …. Much less

It’ll be helluva safer and a huge win for the environment by easing the legendary traffic jams

[–] blazera@kbin.social 0 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Dont think theres gonna be any lanes added?

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

How do you add lanes when you repair a bridge?

[–] blazera@kbin.social 0 points 9 months ago (1 children)
[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

One state is replacing a bridge and it was clearly planned before this $5 billion.

[–] blazera@kbin.social 0 points 9 months ago

This bridge is specifically named in the article we're commenting on it is part of the 5 billion, along with multiple other bridges being replaced, one for over 1 billion alone, with stated goals of increasing capacity and improving traffic congestion.

[–] Odelay42@lemmy.world -1 points 9 months ago (2 children)

These projects should come with strict minimum wage requirements and maximum profit margins for the corporations that run them.

If you pay young people 40 bucks an hour to work on bridges, they will come flocking for these good jobs and regard the fed positively for life.

But they're being institututed by dems so they'll pay 17 an hour, work nights, and give the CEO leeway to pocket 15 million bucks a year.

[–] Telorand@reddthat.com 2 points 9 months ago

You may be right, but let's not cast aspersions without reason. No sense creating a villain where one doesn't (yet) exist.

It's okay to celebrate the win and also remain vigilant.

[–] skulkingaround@sh.itjust.works 1 points 9 months ago

You're severely underestimating how much engineers and construction workers make.
