MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (Reuters) - Donald Trump didn't just want to win in New Hampshire, he wanted to beat Nikki Haley so badly that his sole rival for the Republican presidential nomination would drop out before the next competitive contest in South Carolina a month away.

The former president easily bested the former South Carolina governor on Tuesday, but his carefully crafted strategy to drive Haley out of the race fell short, denying Trump the chance, for now, to focus all his attention on Democratic U.S. President Joe Biden and the November general election.

Trump, 77, was full of fury after Haley, 52, vowed in a Tuesday night speech to fight on, just two days after the other leading Republican contender, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, ended his campaign.

This is precisely what I was hoping for. He’s going to divert his attention to Haley now and America is going to spend the next month watching Trump unleash his full gutter ugliness on a woman who had the temerity not to completely kiss his ass. It’ll yield a commercial-clip bonanza.

I hope he works himself up to an aneurism, and karks it in the middle of one of his hate-rally’s.

Or maybe has a stroke and turns into a vegetable.

Or gets hit by lightning.

I wonder if the secret service would notice if I swapped out his podium for a giant Tesla coil….?

[–] Chainweasel@lemmy.world 20 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (2 children)

Can you imagine if half his face quit working? His goons have been trained over the years to see things like that as a sign of weakness. Look at how he's depicted on his NFT trading cards, if he had a stroke and started slurring his speech and half his face started to sag they would eat him alive right then and there.
He deserves much worse, but that kind of fall from grace in his party would be a good start.

[–] prole@sh.itjust.works 1 points 9 months ago

Lol nah... They'd sooner look for ways to paralyze half of their own face (it'll have to be the right side, because that's the side that froze on Trump, and it means blah blah blah) so they can be like their hero.

[–] Tolookah@discuss.tchncs.de 11 points 9 months ago (2 children)

He may already be a carrot. Maybe the dye we see is for his hair, to de-green it, as opposed to the oranger we think he uses.

There is definitely some kind of satanic deal going on keeping him alive and lucid.

[–] xhieron@lemmy.world 20 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Lucid is a strong word. ...

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago

Hey that doctor back in 201whatever said he was pretty much an expert on telling the difference between a camera and a person.

And he had the brilliance to see the connection between bleach killing viruses on surfaces and that our lungs are basically a surface. If his followers had started snorting bleach instead of just drinking it, he would have solved the pandemic that the Democrats made up to make him look bad.

Just wait and see how lucidly he beats Obama and his running mate Hillary and her running mate Pelosi!

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago

Lucid?! Bro. Dude.

[–] grabyourmotherskeys@lemmy.world 8 points 9 months ago

And a politically significant percentage of men and women will see that behavior, approve of it, and vote for him. Which is insane.

When he's getting his performance review from Vova.

[–] june@lemmy.world 25 points 9 months ago (4 children)

I REALLY hope Haley gets the nod.

Largely because there’s no way republicans will band together enough to elect a woman to the executive.

[–] partial_accumen@lemmy.world 22 points 9 months ago (1 children)

If Haley gets the party nod, I have little doubt Trump will splinter and run as independent/third party (MAGA party?). Along with that split Trump will burn down the Republican party by claiming fixed voting in primaries and unfaithful party leaders.

A number of MAGA reps in Congress will likely switch to this new party expecting their momentum to get them re-elected, but they'll discover the Republican money isn't behind them. McCarthy, famously the leader of GOP fundraising, will work to starve MAGA congressmen/congresswomen of money and back their GOP opponents enacting his revenge against this wing for kicking him out of the Speakership.

[–] june@lemmy.world 10 points 9 months ago (2 children)

If Haley gets the nod it’ll be because Trump is disqualified. I don’t see any other way that it happens.

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

As long as she keeps forcing him to campaign, she's worth her weight in spray tan.

[–] jayrhacker@kbin.social 0 points 9 months ago

Oh, she pretty much has to stay out of the sun, bet her SPF cream is as thick as Trump's tanner.

[–] IphtashuFitz@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

That still wouldn’t stop Trump from campaigning and pushing the MAGA crowd to write him in. If he’s not the GOP candidate then he’ll do everything he can to destroy the GOP.

[–] june@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago

Right, and Biden would sail to an easy victory.

Trump being disqualified or Haley getting the nod both result in a dem win for the executive

[–] LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world 6 points 9 months ago (2 children)

If somehow she wins it all, how fucked will we be? I know nothing about her. I'm a gay woman with health issues that require birth control as a treatment, so I am very concerned about my rights and healthcare.

[–] june@lemmy.world 5 points 9 months ago (2 children)

She’s trump lite, but I think she might actually respect democracy.

I’m queer myself, so I understand some of your fears, but from what I know I’d take Haley over Trump. But we’re really choosing between eating a turd sandwich, or eating a turd without the bread.

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 8 points 9 months ago

Trump is likely more dangerous because he has nothing to lose. Others can at least believe that there's a line that they shouldn't cross if they want to come out of it ahead.

[–] LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago (2 children)

I mean, as long as my existenc doesn't become illegal and I can get the healthcare I need, I'm good. I want everyone to get the best from the government, but at this point I'm seeing things purely from a survival standpoint. I know people who would 100% report me to the authorities if being LGBTQ and/or contraception is outlawed.

So many of my friends have the same fears that I do. The fact we have these fears is a slap in the face to this country and democracy. I mean life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is in the goddamn Declaration of Independence. Shame it doesn't exist off of paper for most people here.

[–] june@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Yep. I keep thinking about that myself, particularly if Trump gets the executive again. I have a legitimate fear for my wellbeing and have started thinking about potential plans for getting out of the country. Fortunately I only live a couple hours away from the Canadian border and feel that I could get there rather easily, but I never would have imagined that I’d be having these thoughts. Especially as a white person who is AMAB. It’s appalling the state of things, and worse yet is that my own mother is all-in for the administration that has made me afraid.

[–] LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I don't have the option to move somewhere else. I am just starting my career and I somehow was able to buy a house. I can't give this up. Not right now at least. I have too much going for me to flee.

I have a plethora of health issues and take quite a few medications daily. Idk how I could get doctors and prescriptions established quick enough in another country. I'm also recovering from a severe ankle/leg injury and I'm looking at least a year before I could maybe be back to having a normally functioning right leg and foot.

At this point, I'm just keeping to myself and only being open either on lemmy or with people I know and trust irl. I'm a closed book to strangers. I got new neighbors months ago and only met one of them two days ago because they got a package that was intended for me. I made the encounter quick and introduced myself (in my nice customer service voice) since my name was on the package the dude was holding.

My house has an alarm system, all doors and windows are locked at all times, I have a weapon that I know how to use for defense, and my dogs are very VERY loud. I also keep some lights on inside my house all the time to make it seem like someone may be home at all times.

Idk what else I can do to protect myself at this point other than vote and hope for the best.

[–] june@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Oh me too. I bought my house 2 years ago and if things can stay even will actually be getting ahead otherwise.

Fleeing is a ‘I’ll die if I don’t’ plan. Nothing else.

[–] LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Ah okay. I'm glad to hear you were able to buy a house! Idek how I got mine. I was like, "I think I'll buy a house." Then had one 6 months later. I do know that getting a USDA loan was a huge factor and the fact my parents let me live with them rent free while saving. The whole experience is a blur at this point though. I think the stress from it all just erased all memory of the process when I was handed the keys. It all happened almost 2 years ago and it still feels surreal. Dunno if I'll ever get used to it tbh.

[–] june@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

lol I feel all that. I was married at the time and my ex wife’s rich aunt and uncle gave us 40k for… reasons? I think they said it was something to do with taxes. Idk. But that with our savings we had enough for a down payment in a conventional. We didn’t qualify for any other programs but it worked out.

6 months later we broke up and I get to keep the house because my salary can afford it. We have an equity agreement in place for when I sell, but it’s a long term recoup for her. Worked out well for me tho

[–] LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I'm sorry your had to get a divorce. It's dope you got to keep the house though. When I got my house, relatives gave me so much shit that I don't have room for instead of money. I didn't have to buy any furniture myself, which was really nice. My house is only 706 square feet. I have minimal storage as well so some stuff is still boxed until I figure out what tf to do with it. . My uncle did expensive electrical work for free, which was awesome. The seller cut me a check for the work at closing because he didn't fix shit like he was supposed to. Got an extra $2500 that I used to buy a shed for my ducks lol.

[–] june@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago

It’s ok. It honestly should have happened a lot sooner, but we were in denial when we bought the house. It’s a long story but buying the house changed everything for us. We’re both a lot happier now, so all good. ❤️

[–] prole@sh.itjust.works 1 points 9 months ago

Well Haley will 100% back every one of these bullshit Republican culture war issues. Your existence will become illegal.

[–] prole@sh.itjust.works 1 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

We'd be pretty fucked. She may have more of a chance in a general election against Biden as there are a lot of conservatives who won't vote for Trump again, but also refuse to vote for Biden (or let's be real, any Democrat).

Her views aren't much different than Trump's, she just doesn't say the quiet part out loud. Just in the past week she said that she would support a national ban on abortion as just one example.

[–] CaptainProton@lemmy.world 5 points 9 months ago

Let's not undersell the circuits it would blow in some Democrat brains. Too bad Republicans can't bring themselves to nominate a woman - that would make the election really interesting.

[–] ook_the_librarian@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

It's the only way Trump's loss won't be so sudden as to cause massive violence.

I kinda think Haley could beat Biden if the MAGA doesn't poison her. But I'd like a race between two people who understand it's possible to lose. I don't understand how anti-democratic "patriots" have become.

[–] DrDeadCrash@programming.dev 2 points 9 months ago

It was always bullshit

[–] Jubei_K_08@lemmy.world 21 points 9 months ago

"Trump..." "...carefully crafted strategy..."

Fuck outta here 😂

[–] chuckleslord@lemmy.world 20 points 9 months ago

He was hoping to secure the nomination before SCOTUS hears if he's even allowed to primary. Not that I think that decision will actually go the way it should in a sane world, but it's one more thing he's got to worry about.

[–] xc2215x@lemmy.world 15 points 9 months ago

Haley did better than I thought she would.

[–] Binthinkin@kbin.social 12 points 9 months ago (1 children)

She’s propped up by Koch money ofc she’s not going away yet.

[–] formergijoe@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

Plus Trump's legal defense is propped up by campaign money. I wonder if she's betting on him giving up enough states to keep from going to prison.

Wow, little d sure is a tiny little man.

[–] meowMix2525@lemm.ee 2 points 9 months ago

If either of them knew what was good for them, they would band together as running mates. Luckily, I don't think either of them do.
