About

Biodiversity is a term used to describe the enormous variety of life on Earth. It can be used more specifically to refer to all of the species in one region or ecosystem. Biodiversity refers to every living thing, including plants, bacteria, animals, and humans. Scientists have estimated that there are around 8.7 million species of plants and animals in existence. However, only around 1.2 million species have been identified and described so far, most of which are insects. This means that millions of other organisms remain a complete mystery.

Over generations, all of the species that are currently alive today have evolved unique traits that make them distinct from other species. These differences are what scientists use to tell one species from another. Organisms that have evolved to be so different from one another that they can no longer reproduce with each other are considered different species. All organisms that can reproduce with each other fall into one species. Read more...

However, Mrs Strapp said a solution was still needed to stop possums nesting under solar panels and prevent burns from hot rooftops in the first place.

I can't speak to the hot surfaces, but around here screening the edges of rooftop solar panels is standard procedure to prevent bats and wasps from taking up residence underneath.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

An endangered possum species, unique to WA's South West, faces a new challenge to its survival as hot tin roofs and solar panels burn the animals' paws.

So far this summer, South West animal welfare group FAWNA has had 19 possums admitted to its care suffering from severely charred paws and dehydration, 12 of which have died from their injuries.

FAWNA president Suzanne Strap said the injuries to the tiny marsupials were typically caused by urbanisation and the destruction of their natural habitat.

With hotter temperatures occurring earlier than expected this year, many possums are now building their nests underneath solar panels on rooftops.

This week, FAWNA acquired an air-conditioned intensive care ward for possums with severe burns and dehydration.

However, Mrs Strapp said a solution was still needed to stop possums nesting under solar panels and prevent burns from hot rooftops in the first place.
