I don't know why tomatoes are always the go-to "technically a fruit"

There are ones that are a lot weirder

Legumes are also fruits, so peanut butter is a smoothie

Heck, refried beans are a smoothie!

[–] Dudewitbow@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 year ago

Because some people dont have the mindset of yhe biological(the scientific mindset) and culinary(the common mindset) seperate.

Tomato is common for it because its a fruit biologically and a vegetable culinarily.

Other examples of it in common practice is "berries". Culinarily, strawberries and raspberries are berries, and bananas arent. Biologically its the opposite.

I think its fair to say a smoothie at least means you drink it from a cup. Is this how you're refried beans?

[–] squiblet@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

I have actually done that… well, I had a medical problem with swallowing and I was making shakes of all kinds of savory foods. Sorta like smooth soups… chicken and broth, roast beef with rice and potatoes, beans with salsa and cilantro… pretty good actually. I kinda miss the chicken milk.

Smoothie bowls are pretty popular.

[–] agent_flounder@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Wait you don't?

How many of those Solanum species are poisonous? New flavours indeed!

[–] jmcs@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Even if you exclude that, I can't imagine a Solanum tuberosum smoothie would be that delicious

[–] ivanafterall@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I can imagine it. I've never had another potato-based item that isn't 10/10.

[–] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 2 points 1 year ago

Mashed potatoes anyone?

[–] squiblet@kbin.social 9 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Baba ganoush is pretty good

[–] Piecemakers3Dprints@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

One of the only smoked smoothies out there!

[–] BarrelAgedBoredom@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Brisket smoothie. Your comment put that image in my head so I want it to be everyone else's problem now

🤢🥹

I think the formula was "preexisting 'fruit' pureé generally considered a vegetable" not a pitch for new episodes of "Will It Blend?" 🤗

[–] observantTrapezium@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 year ago

Came here to say that!

Tomato toxic when it green, but delicious when it red. Creeping nightshade toxic when it green, but has anyone even tried it when it red? Probably delicious.

[–] ShakeThatYam@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Since when are green tomatoes toxic? I eat fried green tomatoes every summer...

[–] Krauerking@lemy.lol 3 points 1 year ago

Oh, I'm.... I'm so sorry.

[–] Skezlarr@aussie.zone 1 points 1 year ago

From just some cursory googling it looks like they are toxic when raw, but frying them neutralizes the toxicity. That's probably why you've never noticed!

[–] WashedOver@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 year ago

Potatoes fall into this category too of both delicious and nightshade fun. So tastes great like anti freeze but it takes a lot longer to finally get you.

[–] alekwithak@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

What? I love green tomatoes:(

[–] ZILtoid1991@kbin.social 8 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Chilis peppers are also fruit, and there's smoothie of them.

[–] fossilesque@mander.xyz 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I make banging pineapple kiwi salsa. It's basically a spicy smoothie with Hungarian wax peppers.

[–] metallic_z3r0@infosec.pub 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] hglman@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 year ago

Just one of the many forms of pepper smoothie.

[–] dumples@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I have eaten American Black Nightshade berries before. They taste like tiny tomatoes mixed with blueberries. I haven't had a full smoothie of them before though

[–] MrSpArkle@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah was gonna say a smoothie of black nightshade would be great.

[–] dumples@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

Would need some other fruits for flavor but would be a good addition

[–] sheepishly@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

That Weird Fruit Explorer guy on Youtube has made some pretty interesting solanum smoothies and weird ketchups.

[–] brown567@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago
[–] iheartneopets@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

Demetrius, give it a fucking rest.

[–] Hundun@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You know what, cucumber is not even a fruit, but once you try adding just a little to your fruit smoothie, there'll be no turning back.

[–] ray@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Cucumber is a fruit though
