I'm wanting to do a few camping trips with friends and I'm also going back to school for a second degree! It's gonna be packed, but I really wanna get outside more this summer, before the smoke rolls in. Do y'all have any fun plans?

Currently waiting to board my flight for my two week trip to Japan :D

[–] melodicangel@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Exciting stuff! Got any specific plans while you're there? Japan sounds lovely... I hope I can go some time.

[–] mint@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Week one I'm showing all the spots in Tokyo to my buddy who gets to go for his first time. Week two we're shinkansening to the other cities which will be new for me as well!

[–] melodicangel@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

That sounds like fun! Hope you have a great time.

I've just recently passed my driving test and bought a car, so plenty of little trips around the Peak District & Yorkshire Dales I think this summer! Might try and venture up to the Lakes too.

Having a car feels so strange, considering I'm a little late to driving - so much freedom!

[–] nxtequal@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You'll hate to hear this, but be careful! I bumped my car a WEEK after I had passed the test. Not as bad as my aunt who got into an accident the day she passed, but still!

[–] jack@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I'm hoping that doesn't happen! I learned in an A3, so my car is a bit smaller which I think helps.

[–] melodicangel@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That's sweet! I love going for cruises in my car. What kinda car do you got?

[–] jack@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

I've bought a little VW Polo!

[–] thegiddystitcher@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Congrats that's awesome! I'm hoping to learn soon too (in my case VERY late to driving), can only imagine how good it must feel.

[–] jack@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

100% worth it! I wish I'd done it sooner now

[–] goransle@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's my first summer with a driving license as well. Definitely some analysis paralysis going on now when deciding where to go for a road trip.

[–] Wahots@pawb.social 3 points 1 year ago

Assign places a number, 1-20, then roll a d20 for initiative :)

[–] Wahots@pawb.social 3 points 1 year ago

Congrats on passing the driving test! There's a lot of freedom that comes with having a car. That was my first taste back when I got it in secondary school. Feels great :)

[–] overlordror@beehaw.org 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm going to see comedian Tig Notaro this summer. I've always enjoyed her deadpan comedy and she's been an icon for me as someone who is also queer and raised in the South.

[–] Wahots@pawb.social 7 points 1 year ago

Yay queer! I just came out last year (and that rhymes) :)

[–] thegiddystitcher@beehaw.org 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

We're going on a cruise at the start of August, which is the sort of thing I could never justify the cost of but has been on my bucket list since I was a kid and thought a cruise was the height of fanciness. In this case, it's with husband's family and it's mostly paid for, so definitely can't turn that down!

Lots of summery sewing to do in preparation. And luckily I already knit and cross stitch as well so should get on fine with the old biddies who I assume make up at least 70% of cruise passengers.

[–] Wahots@pawb.social 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ooooh, river cruise, or ocean cruise? I thibk you'll love either one!

[–] thegiddystitcher@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago

Ocean. Mostly around Greece, and I've never been to Greece so it's double exciting 😄

Already been pricing up river cruises though just in case we really take to it and decide cruise life is the life for us!

Attending some MLS matches up in Kansas City and spending as much time as possible with family. No big travel plans this year but definitely will be camping at state parks around the area.

[–] plactagonic@beehaw.org 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I will be cooking on summer camp.

3 weeks in the of nowhere, bad signal, electric power from small solar panel. Fun stuff away from civilization.

[–] amscan@feddit.uk 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Going to Glastonbury music festival in a week and a half!

[–] wildeaboutoskar@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Lucky! Not been for a few years but I still always get a twinge of sadness around Glastonbury weekend.

Who are you looking forward to seeing?

[–] amscan@feddit.uk 2 points 1 year ago

Probably most excited for Arctic Monkeys, but really looking forward to Blondie as well. Last went in 2017 so it's been a while.

[–] computerfan0@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago

I'll be going to Lanzarote for 10 days in a week. Later I'm attending a summer camp for 2 and a half weeks. I also hope to visit my town's festival in between these times away.

I’m wanting to do a few camping trips with friends and I’m also going back to school for a second degree!

Sounds really cool! How long does a second degree take? It is just over the course of the summer? Also, is it just one subject or general?

I am planning to go hiking with my friends and visit a spa there too. Besides, I'll go to Berlin by train (yay D-Ticket) and visit some sights like the Pergamonmuseum before it closes some of its exhibitions for 15 years.

[–] Wahots@pawb.social 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

God, I miss the trains of Europe so much. I want a rail system like France or Germany over here. Cheap tickets and fast trains instead of windy highways and expensive gas.

The second degree takes two years, since your main degree already covered the core stuff like history, art, etc etc. So a bit shorter. I'm hoping to do it in Canada this fall, but some classes start this summer as an intro. I'm going back to finish off computer science. I started that after getting a degree in something else, but now I wanna marry my fields together :)

That museum looks really cool! I might have missed the language picker, but it was all in German when I searched for it, haha.

Yeah, people are often annoyed by delays here, but I guess in comparison to other countries it is pretty good.

Here is a link to the English version :)

I suspect a lot of folks might not think of this as "fun" but I'm hoping to hike another 300 miles or so by September, on my way to 1,000 (planned!) for the year. Currently I've put in about 525 miles for 2023, all on trails within easy driving distance of southwestern Indiana. Tomorrow I'm off to the One Horse Gap trail system in Illinois for another 25 or 30 as an overnighter.

[–] Wahots@pawb.social 1 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Backpacking is so fun! I just moved and can't wait to go Backpacking again, now that I'm living in a state that won't be cooking half the year!

Absolutely want to go to hopping around my country for photo opportunities. Just how hot it stays over the summer will decide what I end up doing though.

[–] pbjamm@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Moving from USA to Canada.

Not sure that qualifies as fun but it is exciting.

Oooh, is that the game that kicked off rocket jumping as a strat? Or am I thinking of a different game?

[–] nocko@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 1 year ago

I believe so, but Quakecon has evolved into the largest LAN party in North America. So lots of fun with a few thousand friends with games of all types. It's a little smaller this year (first in-person post-covid), but probably still a blast.

[–] RoaringSilence@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

I am easy to satisfy, just watching reddit to implode.🤷‍♂️

[–] kaos95@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

I'm going to continue my AT section hike (I took a couple of years off for covid and ACL replacement), me and my brother are doing. We're doing Hollins, VA to as far as we can get south in 1 month (we are slow AF), lots of support plus a 5 day camping party in Beartown (the only thing we "have' to make) if we can get 250 miles out of this one that means we only need 2 more years to finish the entire damn thing (we are going north to south in sections). Best year was 317 miles, worst year was 135 miles, we are at 8 years so far.

My girlfriend and I are meeting up with some online friends from another state in July! We're going to spend the day at a local amusement park. Very excited!

Also some very exciting stuff you got going on OP! What degree are you going back to school for?

[–] Wahots@pawb.social 2 points 1 year ago

Ooooh, fun! I met my boyfriend online and we've had the most fun ever flying to and from our cities. We just moved close to each other, so now we get more mundane visits:)

Have fun at the amusement park :D

I'm going back to school for computer science and I'm very excited. It's gonna so refreshing to be in a school environment again. Plus im still working, so I get to turn around and immediately apply my knowledge to work. I'm thrilled!

[–] BeastBlood1885@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

I mostly just appreciate the fact that I have an actual backyard now and can get some fresh air more easily and definitely more pleasantly. I like to sit in the backyard and watch the birds visit.

I'm going to Italy!

Second time I'm going (third if you count Sicily). It's just the best country... Amazing food and people.

But important to stay away from tourist areas. That's not Italy... That's capitalism. :)

[–] wildeaboutoskar@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I'm going to the Edinburgh fringe in August. I try and go every year but it's more expensive this year so only staying for a few days this time. Love exploring the city as well as going to the comedy, it's so beautiful and filled with history.

Also seeing Sigur Ros in London next week which is exciting. They're performing with an orchestra so it will no doubt make me cry

[–] effingnerd@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago

Taking summer classes at a new university, heading to NYC for a week, lots of reading and writing, and hopefully a little camping. Hectic and rewarding is my goal!

[–] Grassgrowz@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I wanna go fishing again. I love fishing, but I gotta get over my fear of touching slimy spasming fish...

[–] TechnicolorRex@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago

We are laying low this summer. Simply saving up for a bigger vacation in a year or 2.

That said, we still plan to bring the kiddo to an amusement park, some hikes, and Michigan Renaissance Festival.

[–] Saryn@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm not sure if it's fun in the traditional sense, but I'm going to learn Python! I've been really unhappy in a dead-end (non retail) job and I'm hoping to branch out into tech for better opportunities (and perhaps benefits that don't require me to use my PTO to cover mandatory holidays...) It will be a lot of work, but so far the tiny bit I have done has been really fun!

[–] thegiddystitcher@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

Honestly that does sound really fun! The best thing about coding is that once you've learned to do it decently in one language, you can pick other languages up really easy. Good luck!

[–] Super_Stone@feddit.de 1 points 1 year ago

I will be going to the Amphi Festival in Cologne this year! I still have to find someone to go together with me, since it is way more fun to have some people to talk to for the weekend when it happens but I am already excited.

[–] StrahdVonZarovich@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

Me and my family try to go to Cape May, New Jeresy every year. Been going there since I was a kid. Beautiful beaches, lots of great restaurants, its a fun time. Plus they have the best hot dogs on the East Coast: Hot Dog Tommy's. He's a really nice guy too (although he retired and now a new guy wears the hot dog hat).

A few weeks ago I also went to New Orleans. Amazing food, but The Simpson's werent kidding about how bad it could be. The French Quarter really does smell like garbage 24/7, and it gets really busy and hectic at night. Reminds me of a tourist trap boardwalk. But I loved everything else about it, and the National WW2 Museum is there. Although the museum didnt go in depth as I thought it would, and they really focus on the U.S. A tour through there made me realize why so many Americans think we won the war single-handedly.
